Ransomware : Your Feared IT Catastrophe
Ransomware Remediation ConsultantsCrypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyberplague that poses an enterprise-level danger for organizations vulnerable to an attack. Different versions of ransomware like the Reveton, CryptoWall, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and continue to cause destruction. The latest versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Egregor, as well as frequent as yet unnamed malware, not only do encryption of online critical data but also infect all configured system backups. Data replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be held hostage. In a vulnerable system, this can render automatic recovery useless and basically sets the datacenter back to square one.

Getting back online applications and data following a ransomware outage becomes a race against time as the targeted organization tries its best to stop the spread, remove the ransomware, and restore mission-critical activity. Since ransomware requires time to spread, assaults are usually sprung during weekends and nights, when successful penetrations are likely to take more time to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly marshalling and organizing a capable mitigation team.

Progent provides an assortment of support services for securing enterprises from ransomware events. Among these are staff education to become familiar with and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, plus installation of next-generation security gateways with AI technology from SentinelOne to discover and disable zero-day threats intelligently. Progent in addition can provide the assistance of seasoned crypto-ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and commitment to restore a compromised environment as quickly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
Soon after a ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will return the codes to decrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their files even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions of dollars. The alternative is to re-install the vital elements of your IT environment. Absent the availability of full information backups, this calls for a wide range of skills, well-coordinated team management, and the ability to work non-stop until the job is finished.

For decades, Progent has provided certified expert Information Technology services for companies across the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts includes engineers who have attained advanced certifications in key technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's security engineers have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise with financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of experience gives Progent the skills to knowledgably identify necessary systems and re-organize the surviving parts of your IT system following a crypto-ransomware event and rebuild them into a functioning network.

Progent's recovery team uses top notch project management systems to orchestrate the complicated recovery process. Progent appreciates the importance of working rapidly and together with a customer's management and Information Technology staff to prioritize tasks and to put critical applications back on line as fast as possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Virus Response
A small business contacted Progent after their network was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been developed by Northern Korean state hackers, suspected of using approaches exposed from America's NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific organizations with little room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative examples of ransomware viruses. Major organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturer based in Chicago with around 500 staff members. The Ryuk attack had paralyzed all essential operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the start of the attack and were destroyed. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (exceeding $200,000) and hoping for the best, but in the end reached out to Progent.

"I can't thank you enough about the support Progent gave us during the most stressful period of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals if not for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. That you were able to get our messaging and production servers back on-line sooner than seven days was beyond my wildest dreams. Each consultant I spoke to or e-mailed at Progent was urgently focused on getting our system up and was working breakneck pace to bail us out."

Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly understand and prioritize the most important services that had to be addressed in order to resume company operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Financials/MRP
To start, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes event response industry best practices by stopping lateral movement and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then initiated the steps of rebuilding Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise systems built on Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange email will not operate without Windows AD, and the businesses' financials and MRP applications used SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory for authentication to the databases.

In less than 2 days, Progent was able to re-build Active Directory services to its pre-penetration state. Progent then assisted with reinstallations and hard drive recovery of critical systems. All Exchange data and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to collect local OST files (Outlook Offline Folder Files) on various desktop computers and laptops to recover mail data. A not too old offline backup of the customer's accounting systems made it possible to restore these essential programs back servicing users. Although major work needed to be completed to recover completely from the Ryuk virus, core systems were restored rapidly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation survived unscathed and we made all customer deliverables."

Over the next couple of weeks important milestones in the recovery process were accomplished through tight cooperation between Progent consultants and the customer:

  • Internal web sites were restored with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding 4 million historical emails was spun up and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables/Inventory capabilities were fully restored.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was set up.
  • Ninety percent of the desktop computers were operational.

"Much of what transpired in the early hours is nearly entirely a haze for me, but we will not soon forget the commitment each and every one of you accomplished to give us our business back. I have utilized Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and every time Progent has come through and delivered. This situation was a life saver."

Conclusion
A probable company-ending catastrophe was avoided with results-oriented experts, a wide range of IT skills, and close collaboration. Although in retrospect the ransomware virus attack described here should have been identified and disabled with up-to-date cyber security solutions and recognized best practices, team training, and well designed security procedures for information protection and applying software patches, the reality is that state-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware incident, feel confident that Progent's team of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and file restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were helping), thanks very much for making it so I could get rested after we got past the initial push. Everyone did an incredible effort, and if any of your guys is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
