Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Disaster
Crypto-Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that represents an existential danger for organizations vulnerable to an attack. Different iterations of ransomware like the Reveton, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for many years and still inflict havoc. Newer strains of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Egregor, plus additional as yet unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of online critical data but also infect many available system protection mechanisms. Information replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be ransomed. In a poorly designed data protection solution, it can make any recovery hopeless and basically knocks the entire system back to square one.
Getting back on-line applications and data after a ransomware intrusion becomes a sprint against the clock as the targeted business tries its best to contain the damage, cleanup the ransomware, and resume mission-critical operations. Because ransomware requires time to replicate, attacks are often launched during weekends and nights, when penetrations typically take more time to uncover. This multiplies the difficulty of rapidly marshalling and coordinating an experienced mitigation team.
Progent has a range of support services for protecting businesses from ransomware attacks. These include staff education to help recognize and avoid phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus deployment of modern security gateways with AI capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine new cyber attacks rapidly. Progent also can provide the assistance of veteran crypto-ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and commitment to restore a compromised environment as soon as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Recovery Services
After a ransomware event, paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that merciless criminals will respond with the codes to decrypt all your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their data after having paid the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The alternative is to piece back together the critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Without access to essential information backups, this requires a broad complement of skill sets, top notch project management, and the ability to work continuously until the job is finished.
For twenty years, Progent has offered professional Information Technology services for businesses across the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have been awarded advanced industry certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of experience gives Progent the skills to rapidly identify necessary systems and organize the surviving parts of your Information Technology system after a ransomware penetration and assemble them into an operational network.
Progent's security team has state-of-the-art project management tools to coordinate the complicated recovery process. Progent knows the importance of working rapidly and in unison with a customer's management and IT resources to prioritize tasks and to get critical systems back online as fast as possible.
Customer Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Virus Recovery
A client contacted Progent after their network system was brought down by Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is generally considered to have been deployed by North Korean state cybercriminals, suspected of adopting algorithms leaked from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific companies with little or no ability to sustain disruption and is one of the most lucrative iterations of crypto-ransomware. High publicized victims include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing business located in Chicago and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all essential operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's backups had been online at the start of the attack and were damaged. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and hoping for the best, but in the end made the decision to use Progent.
"I cannot speak enough in regards to the care Progent provided us during the most fearful period of (our) businesses survival. We had little choice but to pay the criminal gangs except for the confidence the Progent experts gave us. That you could get our messaging and critical applications back faster than a week was incredible. Every single consultant I worked with or texted at Progent was laser focused on getting us operational and was working non-stop to bail us out."
Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly get our arms around and assign priority to the critical systems that had to be recovered in order to restart departmental functions:
- Microsoft Active Directory
- Electronic Mail
- Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent followed ransomware penetration response best practices by halting the spread and performing virus removal steps. Progent then started the task of rebuilding Windows Active Directory, the core of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange messaging will not operate without Active Directory, and the customer's MRP applications used Microsoft SQL, which depends on Active Directory for access to the information.
Within 2 days, Progent was able to recover Windows Active Directory to its pre-penetration state. Progent then accomplished reinstallations and hard drive recovery of key servers. All Exchange Server ties and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to assemble intact OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Folder Files) on team PCs in order to recover email data. A not too old offline backup of the businesses accounting systems made them able to restore these required applications back available to users. Although significant work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk damage, core services were recovered rapidly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we did not miss any customer shipments."
During the following couple of weeks critical milestones in the recovery process were made through close cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:
- Internal web applications were brought back up with no loss of data.
- The MailStore Server exceeding four million historical messages was restored to operations and available for users.
- CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control functions were fully operational.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was brought on-line.
- Most of the user PCs were operational.
"A huge amount of what was accomplished those first few days is mostly a haze for me, but our team will not forget the dedication each of you accomplished to help get our business back. I've entrusted Progent for the past 10 years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered. This event was a Herculean accomplishment."
Conclusion
A possible company-ending catastrophe was avoided through the efforts of dedicated experts, a broad array of knowledge, and close teamwork. Although in retrospect the crypto-ransomware virus incident described here would have been identified and blocked with up-to-date cyber security technology solutions and security best practices, user and IT administrator training, and appropriate security procedures for data protection and applying software patches, the fact is that state-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware penetration, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and information systems recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were involved), thank you for making it so I could get some sleep after we got through the initial push. All of you did an impressive effort, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
