Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a modern cyberplague that presents an enterprise-level threat for organizations poorly prepared for an attack. Different iterations of crypto-ransomware like the CryptoLocker, CryptoWall, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for many years and still inflict destruction. Newer versions of crypto-ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Egregor, as well as more as yet unnamed malware, not only do encryption of on-line information but also infect many configured system backups. Information synched to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be ransomed. In a vulnerable data protection solution, it can make any restoration impossible and effectively sets the entire system back to square one.

Getting back on-line applications and data after a ransomware event becomes a sprint against the clock as the victim fights to contain, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and resume business-critical operations. Because crypto-ransomware needs time to replicate, penetrations are usually launched at night, when attacks typically take more time to notice. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly assembling and orchestrating a capable mitigation team.

Progent makes available an assortment of support services for protecting enterprises from ransomware attacks. These include team member education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of next-generation security gateways with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to identify and suppress day-zero cyber threats rapidly. Progent also can provide the assistance of expert ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and perseverance to re-deploy a breached environment as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware invasion, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that merciless criminals will respond with the keys to decipher all your information. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The alternative is to setup from scratch the critical parts of your IT environment. Absent the availability of complete data backups, this calls for a wide range of skill sets, professional team management, and the willingness to work continuously until the task is finished.

For two decades, Progent has offered professional IT services for businesses across the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have attained high-level certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security consultants have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience with accounting and ERP application software. This breadth of experience affords Progent the ability to rapidly ascertain critical systems and organize the remaining parts of your computer network environment after a ransomware penetration and rebuild them into an operational network.

Progent's ransomware group deploys best of breed project management tools to coordinate the complicated restoration process. Progent knows the importance of working swiftly and in concert with a customer's management and IT resources to prioritize tasks and to put key applications back on line as fast as humanly possible.

Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Incident Restoration
A client escalated to Progent after their company was attacked by the Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been deployed by North Korean state hackers, suspected of using techniques exposed from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific companies with limited tolerance for disruption and is among the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware viruses. High publicized organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturer headquartered in the Chicago metro area with around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all company operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been online at the start of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (exceeding $200K) and praying for the best, but ultimately made the decision to use Progent.

"I can't say enough in regards to the expertise Progent provided us throughout the most fearful time of (our) company's life. We would have paid the hackers behind this attack if not for the confidence the Progent team provided us. The fact that you could get our messaging and essential servers back online faster than seven days was earth shattering. Each person I worked with or e-mailed at Progent was hell bent on getting us restored and was working day and night on our behalf."

Progent worked with the customer to rapidly assess and prioritize the mission critical elements that needed to be recovered to make it possible to resume departmental functions:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To get going, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes penetration response industry best practices by stopping the spread and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then began the process of rebuilding Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Exchange messaging will not operate without Windows AD, and the businesses' financials and MRP applications used Microsoft SQL, which depends on Active Directory for security authorization to the databases.

In less than two days, Progent was able to restore Windows Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then charged ahead with reinstallations and hard drive recovery on needed systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server data and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate local OST files (Outlook Email Offline Folder Files) on staff PCs and laptops to recover email data. A not too old off-line backup of the client's accounting/MRP software made them able to return these required services back available to users. Although significant work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, the most important services were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation survived unscathed and we delivered all customer sales."

Throughout the following few weeks key milestones in the recovery project were completed through tight cooperation between Progent consultants and the client:

  • Internal web applications were returned to operation without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Server exceeding 4 million archived emails was spun up and available for users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable (AP)/AR/Inventory Control modules were completely operational.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was brought on-line.
  • Ninety percent of the user workstations were fully operational.

"A huge amount of what occurred that first week is mostly a blur for me, but our team will not soon forget the commitment each of you accomplished to help get our company back. I've trusted Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and each time Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This time was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A likely business catastrophe was averted with top-tier professionals, a wide array of technical expertise, and tight teamwork. Although in post mortem the ransomware virus penetration described here would have been prevented with up-to-date cyber security systems and recognized best practices, team education, and properly executed incident response procedures for backup and applying software patches, the fact remains that state-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware incident, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has substantial experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, cleanup, and file recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (along with others that were helping), thank you for making it so I could get rested after we made it over the initial fire. Everyone did an fabulous effort, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
