Ransomware : Your Feared IT Catastrophe
Ransomware Recovery ProfessionalsCrypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that represents an existential threat for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an attack. Different versions of crypto-ransomware such as CrySIS, Fusob, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for many years and still inflict damage. Modern variants of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Nephilim, as well as additional unnamed malware, not only do encryption of on-line files but also infect many accessible system protection. Information synched to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed system, it can render any restoration hopeless and effectively sets the entire system back to square one.

Restoring programs and information after a ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business fights to contain, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and restore enterprise-critical activity. Because crypto-ransomware needs time to spread, attacks are usually launched during weekends and nights, when penetrations typically take longer to uncover. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly marshalling and organizing an experienced mitigation team.

Progent makes available a variety of help services for securing enterprises from crypto-ransomware events. These include team member education to become familiar with and avoid phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of modern security appliances with AI technology from SentinelOne to discover and suppress new threats rapidly. Progent in addition offers the assistance of seasoned ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and perseverance to reconstruct a compromised system as urgently as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Support Services
Soon after a ransomware invasion, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will provide the keys to decrypt any of your data. Kaspersky determined that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their information even after having paid the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The other path is to setup from scratch the vital components of your IT environment. Without the availability of essential system backups, this requires a wide range of skill sets, well-coordinated project management, and the willingness to work 24x7 until the task is completed.

For twenty years, Progent has made available professional Information Technology services for companies across the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded top industry certifications in foundation technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security consultants have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience with accounting and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience affords Progent the ability to knowledgably ascertain necessary systems and re-organize the surviving components of your Information Technology environment after a ransomware penetration and configure them into an operational network.

Progent's ransomware group uses top notch project management tools to orchestrate the complicated recovery process. Progent appreciates the importance of acting rapidly and in unison with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to put key systems back on line as fast as possible.

Business Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Incident Restoration
A small business hired Progent after their network was taken over by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been launched by North Korean state sponsored hackers, suspected of adopting algorithms leaked from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific companies with limited ability to sustain operational disruption and is among the most profitable examples of ransomware. High publicized victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a regional manufacturer based in Chicago with about 500 workers. The Ryuk event had brought down all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the beginning of the intrusion and were damaged. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (in excess of $200,000) and praying for good luck, but in the end brought in Progent.

"I cannot thank you enough about the expertise Progent provided us throughout the most fearful period of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the Hackers if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. That you could get our messaging and essential applications back into operation faster than 1 week was amazing. Each expert I got help from or messaged at Progent was absolutely committed on getting our company operational and was working all day and night to bail us out."

Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly assess and assign priority to the essential areas that needed to be restored in order to restart departmental operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Electronic Messaging
  • Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent followed Anti-virus penetration response best practices by halting lateral movement and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then initiated the steps of recovering Windows Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not operate without Active Directory, and the businesses' financials and MRP system utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Windows AD for security authorization to the information.

Within 48 hours, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory services to its pre-attack state. Progent then initiated reinstallations and storage recovery of needed servers. All Exchange ties and configuration information were usable, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to locate local OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on various workstations to recover email messages. A recent off-line backup of the customer's accounting/MRP software made them able to restore these essential programs back online for users. Although a large amount of work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, critical systems were recovered quickly:

"For the most part, the production line operation did not miss a beat and we made all customer orders."

Over the following few weeks critical milestones in the recovery process were accomplished in tight collaboration between Progent engineers and the client:

  • In-house web applications were brought back up without losing any data.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server exceeding 4 million historical messages was spun up and available for users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables/Inventory functions were fully functional.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was installed.
  • Most of the user desktops and notebooks were functioning as before the incident.

"Much of what transpired in the initial days is nearly entirely a haze for me, but our team will not forget the urgency each of your team put in to help get our business back. I have trusted Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and each time Progent has shined and delivered. This time was a stunning achievement."

Conclusion
A possible enterprise-killing disaster was avoided by hard-working experts, a broad array of knowledge, and close teamwork. Although in post mortem the ransomware virus incident detailed here should have been identified and prevented with modern cyber security technology solutions and recognized best practices, user and IT administrator education, and appropriate security procedures for data protection and applying software patches, the fact is that state-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware penetration, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, remediation, and information systems restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (along with others that were helping), I'm grateful for letting me get rested after we made it over the initial push. All of you did an amazing job, and if anyone that helped is around the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
