Crypto-Ransomware : Your Worst Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware has become an escalating cyberplague that represents an existential threat for businesses poorly prepared for an attack. Different versions of ransomware such as CryptoLocker, WannaCry, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for many years and continue to cause havoc. More recent variants of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, LockBit or Egregor, as well as daily as yet unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of online data but also infiltrate many configured system backup. Data replicated to the cloud can also be held hostage. In a poorly designed system, this can render automatic recovery impossible and effectively knocks the network back to zero.
Restoring programs and data following a ransomware event becomes a race against time as the targeted organization tries its best to contain the damage, eradicate the ransomware, and restore mission-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware takes time to move laterally, penetrations are frequently launched during nights and weekends, when penetrations tend to take longer to notice. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and coordinating a capable mitigation team.
Progent offers a range of help services for securing businesses from ransomware penetrations. Among these are staff training to help identify and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of next-generation security appliances with artificial intelligence capabilities from SentinelOne to identify and extinguish zero-day cyber threats automatically. Progent also offers the assistance of experienced ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and perseverance to restore a compromised system as rapidly as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Recovery Support Services
Subsequent to a ransomware invasion, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will respond with the needed codes to unencrypt all your files. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never recovered their data after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The other path is to setup from scratch the mission-critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of complete system backups, this requires a broad range of skill sets, well-coordinated project management, and the willingness to work non-stop until the job is finished.
For twenty years, Progent has made available professional IT services for businesses throughout the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have attained high-level certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security engineers have garnered internationally-renowned certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial management and ERP applications. This breadth of experience provides Progent the ability to efficiently determine critical systems and integrate the surviving pieces of your computer network system following a crypto-ransomware penetration and configure them into an operational system.
Progent's security team uses best of breed project management systems to coordinate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent knows the urgency of working swiftly and in concert with a client's management and IT resources to prioritize tasks and to put key services back on line as soon as humanly possible.
Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Restoration
A customer escalated to Progent after their company was brought down by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been created by North Korean state criminal gangs, suspected of using algorithms leaked from America's NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific businesses with little ability to sustain disruption and is among the most profitable incarnations of ransomware malware. Major organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a small manufacturing company located in Chicago and has around 500 employees. The Ryuk penetration had shut down all essential operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's system backups had been on-line at the beginning of the attack and were damaged. The client was pursuing financing for paying the ransom demand (exceeding $200K) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but ultimately brought in Progent.
"I can't speak enough about the support Progent gave us during the most critical period of (our) company's existence. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals behind the attack if not for the confidence the Progent experts afforded us. The fact that you could get our messaging and essential applications back into operation faster than seven days was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single staff member I got help from or communicated with at Progent was totally committed on getting our system up and was working non-stop on our behalf."
Progent worked with the customer to rapidly identify and assign priority to the mission critical systems that had to be restored to make it possible to resume business operations:
- Active Directory (AD)
- Microsoft Exchange Server
- Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To begin, Progent followed Anti-virus incident response industry best practices by halting the spread and clearing infected systems. Progent then initiated the work of bringing back online Windows Active Directory, the heart of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Exchange messaging will not work without Windows AD, and the client's financials and MRP system leveraged SQL Server, which requires Active Directory services for authentication to the databases.
Within two days, Progent was able to recover Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then assisted with setup and storage recovery on essential systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server ties and attributes were intact, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate local OST files (Outlook Offline Folder Files) on user desktop computers and laptops to recover email messages. A recent offline backup of the customer's financials/ERP software made it possible to restore these essential programs back online for users. Although a lot of work needed to be completed to recover completely from the Ryuk event, core services were returned to operations quickly:
"For the most part, the assembly line operation did not miss a beat and we made all customer sales."
During the next few weeks key milestones in the recovery project were completed in tight cooperation between Progent team members and the client:
- In-house web sites were returned to operation with no loss of information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million archived emails was brought on-line and available for users.
- CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory functions were completely functional.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was installed.
- Nearly all of the user PCs were fully operational.
"A huge amount of what transpired during the initial response is mostly a blur for me, but my team will not forget the care each of you accomplished to help get our business back. I have entrusted Progent for the past 10 years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has shined and delivered. This event was the most impressive ever."
Conclusion
A probable business-killing catastrophe was dodged due to hard-working experts, a wide spectrum of technical expertise, and close collaboration. Although in hindsight the crypto-ransomware virus penetration described here would have been identified and stopped with modern cyber security technology and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, staff education, and properly executed security procedures for data backup and proper patching controls, the fact remains that government-sponsored cyber criminals from China, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware incident, remember that Progent's roster of experts has a proven track record in ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and information systems restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others that were contributing), I'm grateful for letting me get some sleep after we made it past the first week. Everyone did an fabulous effort, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
