Crypto-Ransomware : Your Worst IT Nightmare
Crypto-Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsRansomware has become a modern cyberplague that presents an extinction-level danger for organizations poorly prepared for an attack. Different versions of ransomware like the CrySIS, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for a long time and still cause harm. Newer strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, LockBit or Egregor, as well as frequent unnamed malware, not only encrypt online information but also infect many available system protection mechanisms. Information replicated to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed environment, this can render any restoration impossible and effectively sets the network back to square one.

Getting back on-line applications and data following a ransomware outage becomes a race against time as the targeted business struggles to contain the damage, remove the ransomware, and restore mission-critical operations. Because ransomware needs time to move laterally, attacks are often sprung at night, when successful attacks tend to take longer to identify. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly assembling and coordinating an experienced mitigation team.

Progent offers an assortment of help services for protecting businesses from ransomware attacks. These include staff training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, plus installation of the latest generation security appliances with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to detect and suppress zero-day threats automatically. Progent in addition provides the services of experienced ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and perseverance to reconstruct a breached system as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Support Services
Subsequent to a ransomware invasion, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that distant criminals will provide the codes to decrypt any or all of your information. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can reach millions. The fallback is to re-install the essential elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to essential system backups, this requires a broad complement of skill sets, well-coordinated project management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the job is over.

For two decades, Progent has made available professional Information Technology services for companies throughout the U.S. and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded top certifications in foundation technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's security experts have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in financial management and ERP applications. This breadth of experience provides Progent the capability to efficiently identify critical systems and re-organize the surviving components of your network system following a crypto-ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning network.

Progent's ransomware team of experts has state-of-the-art project management applications to orchestrate the complicated recovery process. Progent understands the importance of working swiftly and in concert with a client's management and Information Technology resources to prioritize tasks and to put essential systems back on-line as fast as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Penetration Response
A client sought out Progent after their organization was penetrated by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been created by Northern Korean government sponsored hackers, possibly adopting approaches leaked from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk targets specific businesses with little or no tolerance for disruption and is among the most profitable instances of ransomware. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturer based in Chicago and has around 500 workers. The Ryuk penetration had shut down all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's system backups had been on-line at the start of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client was pursuing financing for paying the ransom (more than $200,000) and hoping for good luck, but in the end called Progent.

"I can't speak enough in regards to the help Progent gave us throughout the most fearful period of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals behind the attack except for the confidence the Progent team gave us. The fact that you could get our e-mail system and production applications back on-line in less than 1 week was amazing. Every single consultant I spoke to or messaged at Progent was hell bent on getting our company operational and was working day and night on our behalf."

Progent worked with the customer to quickly determine and assign priority to the mission critical areas that needed to be restored to make it possible to resume business operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Electronic Mail
  • Financials/MRP
To get going, Progent adhered to ransomware event mitigation best practices by halting lateral movement and disinfecting systems. Progent then began the steps of restoring Microsoft AD, the core of enterprise networks built on Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange messaging will not function without Windows AD, and the businesses' MRP applications used SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory services for security authorization to the databases.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory services to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then charged ahead with reinstallations and storage recovery on essential servers. All Exchange data and attributes were usable, which greatly helped the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect intact OST files (Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on various PCs in order to recover mail information. A not too old offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP software made them able to recover these essential applications back online. Although a large amount of work still had to be done to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, core systems were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the production line operation did not miss a beat and we did not miss any customer orders."

Throughout the following couple of weeks critical milestones in the recovery process were completed in close cooperation between Progent consultants and the customer:

  • Internal web sites were brought back up with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server containing more than four million archived emails was brought online and available for users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory functions were 100% operational.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was set up and programmed.
  • 90% of the user PCs were back into operation.

"Much of what transpired those first few days is mostly a blur for me, but our team will not forget the commitment each of the team put in to help get our business back. I've trusted Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and each time Progent has come through and delivered. This time was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A potential business extinction catastrophe was evaded through the efforts of hard-working professionals, a broad spectrum of subject matter expertise, and tight teamwork. Although in retrospect the ransomware virus incident described here would have been identified and blocked with current security technology solutions and ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, user training, and properly executed security procedures for data protection and applying software patches, the fact is that state-sponsored hackers from China, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's team of experts has extensive experience in ransomware virus blocking, mitigation, and information systems disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were contributing), I'm grateful for making it so I could get some sleep after we got over the initial fire. All of you did an incredible job, and if anyone is around the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
