Crypto-Ransomware : Your Worst Information Technology Disaster
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsCrypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyberplague that poses an extinction-level threat for businesses unprepared for an assault. Different iterations of crypto-ransomware like the CrySIS, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for a long time and still cause destruction. More recent versions of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, LockBit or Nephilim, as well as more unnamed viruses, not only encrypt online information but also infect all configured system restores and backups. Data replicated to cloud environments can also be held hostage. In a poorly designed data protection solution, this can render any restore operations useless and basically knocks the network back to square one.

Getting back on-line applications and information after a ransomware outage becomes a sprint against time as the targeted business struggles to contain the damage, eradicate the virus, and resume business-critical operations. Due to the fact that ransomware needs time to move laterally, attacks are frequently launched on weekends and holidays, when penetrations in many cases take more time to uncover. This multiplies the difficulty of rapidly mobilizing and organizing a qualified mitigation team.

Progent has a variety of support services for securing organizations from ransomware penetrations. These include team education to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of modern security appliances with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to identify and quarantine new cyber threats intelligently. Progent in addition can provide the services of veteran ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and perseverance to reconstruct a compromised environment as urgently as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
Soon after a crypto-ransomware penetration, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that merciless criminals will return the keys to decrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their data after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can reach millions of dollars. The alternative is to re-install the key parts of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of complete information backups, this requires a wide range of IT skills, top notch project management, and the willingness to work 24x7 until the task is over.

For two decades, Progent has provided certified expert IT services for companies throughout the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes professionals who have earned top certifications in foundation technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in accounting and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise affords Progent the capability to efficiently ascertain important systems and integrate the surviving parts of your network environment after a ransomware penetration and configure them into a functioning system.

Progent's recovery team of experts deploys top notch project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent knows the urgency of acting swiftly and in unison with a client's management and IT staff to prioritize tasks and to get key applications back on line as fast as possible.

Customer Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Attack Restoration
A business hired Progent after their organization was brought down by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been launched by Northern Korean state criminal gangs, suspected of adopting techniques exposed from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific organizations with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable versions of ransomware. High publicized victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing company headquartered in the Chicago metro area with around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had paralyzed all essential operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the beginning of the attack and were damaged. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom demand (in excess of two hundred thousand dollars) and praying for the best, but in the end reached out to Progent.

"I can't speak enough in regards to the care Progent provided us throughout the most critical period of (our) company's survival. We had little choice but to pay the criminal gangs if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group provided us. That you could get our e-mail and key applications back into operation quicker than seven days was something I thought impossible. Each expert I interacted with or messaged at Progent was hell bent on getting us operational and was working all day and night on our behalf."

Progent worked with the customer to rapidly get our arms around and assign priority to the essential areas that needed to be addressed in order to resume business functions:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Microsoft Exchange Email
  • Accounting/MRP
To begin, Progent adhered to ransomware penetration mitigation industry best practices by halting lateral movement and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then began the task of recovering Microsoft AD, the core of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not work without AD, and the client's MRP applications used Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Active Directory for access to the data.

Within 48 hours, Progent was able to rebuild Windows Active Directory to its pre-penetration state. Progent then completed reinstallations and hard drive recovery of mission critical applications. All Exchange schema and attributes were intact, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to assemble intact OST data files (Outlook Offline Data Files) on staff PCs to recover email information. A recent offline backup of the customer's financials/ERP systems made it possible to return these essential services back available to users. Although major work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk damage, critical systems were restored rapidly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation never missed a beat and we made all customer orders."

Over the following few weeks key milestones in the recovery process were achieved through close cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • In-house web sites were restored without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server exceeding four million archived messages was brought online and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control modules were 100% operational.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was installed.
  • Most of the user PCs were back into operation.

"A huge amount of what went on those first few days is mostly a haze for me, but our team will not soon forget the urgency all of your team accomplished to help get our business back. I have been working together with Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and each time Progent has shined and delivered as promised. This event was a Herculean accomplishment."

Conclusion
A likely enterprise-killing disaster was evaded by top-tier experts, a wide spectrum of knowledge, and tight collaboration. Although upon completion of forensics the ransomware attack detailed here would have been prevented with modern security technology and best practices, user and IT administrator education, and appropriate incident response procedures for data protection and applying software patches, the fact is that state-sponsored cyber criminals from China, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware penetration, remember that Progent's team of professionals has proven experience in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, removal, and data recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others that were involved), thank you for letting me get rested after we got past the most critical parts. All of you did an amazing job, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
