Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware has become a modern cyberplague that represents an enterprise-level danger for businesses poorly prepared for an attack. Different iterations of crypto-ransomware such as Dharma, WannaCry, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for years and continue to inflict damage. The latest strains of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Egregor, along with frequent as yet unnamed viruses, not only encrypt on-line data files but also infect most available system protection. Data replicated to the cloud can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed system, this can render automated recovery impossible and effectively knocks the network back to zero.
Recovering applications and information after a crypto-ransomware outage becomes a sprint against time as the targeted business tries its best to stop the spread, clear the ransomware, and resume mission-critical operations. Because crypto-ransomware requires time to spread, penetrations are often launched during weekends and nights, when attacks tend to take longer to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly marshalling and coordinating a capable mitigation team.
Progent makes available a range of solutions for protecting businesses from ransomware attacks. Among these are user training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to installation of next-generation security solutions with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to identify and quarantine day-zero threats quickly. Progent in addition can provide the services of experienced ransomware recovery consultants with the track record and commitment to restore a compromised network as soon as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Support Services
Soon after a ransomware invasion, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that cyber criminals will return the keys to decrypt any of your files. Kaspersky estimated that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions. The alternative is to piece back together the mission-critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of full data backups, this requires a broad range of IT skills, professional team management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the job is complete.
For decades, Progent has provided expert Information Technology services for companies throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have attained top certifications in foundation technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's security consultants have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience in financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the skills to knowledgably determine important systems and consolidate the remaining components of your IT system after a ransomware penetration and configure them into a functioning system.
Progent's ransomware team utilizes best of breed project management applications to coordinate the complicated recovery process. Progent understands the importance of acting swiftly and in unison with a client's management and Information Technology resources to assign priority to tasks and to put essential services back on-line as soon as possible.
Customer Story: A Successful Ransomware Penetration Recovery
A small business engaged Progent after their network system was crashed by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been created by North Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of adopting approaches leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk targets specific companies with limited room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative instances of crypto-ransomware. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a regional manufacturer headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has about 500 workers. The Ryuk penetration had brought down all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's backups had been directly accessible at the time of the attack and were damaged. The client considered paying the ransom (exceeding $200,000) and hoping for good luck, but in the end brought in Progent.
"I cannot tell you enough in regards to the expertise Progent provided us during the most critical period of (our) company's existence. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals if not for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. That you were able to get our e-mail system and essential servers back into operation quicker than seven days was something I thought impossible. Each staff member I talked with or texted at Progent was totally committed on getting my company operational and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."
Progent worked together with the client to rapidly get our arms around and assign priority to the essential systems that needed to be restored in order to restart departmental functions:
- Active Directory (AD)
- Microsoft Exchange
- Financials/MRP
To start, Progent adhered to ransomware event mitigation industry best practices by stopping lateral movement and removing active viruses. Progent then started the process of rebuilding Microsoft Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange messaging will not operate without Active Directory, and the client's accounting and MRP software utilized Microsoft SQL, which requires Active Directory services for security authorization to the information.
In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to re-build Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then helped perform setup and hard drive recovery on critical applications. All Microsoft Exchange Server schema and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to find non-encrypted OST files (Outlook Email Off-Line Folder Files) on team workstations in order to recover email information. A not too old off-line backup of the customer's financials/MRP systems made them able to recover these essential services back servicing users. Although significant work needed to be completed to recover totally from the Ryuk virus, critical services were recovered rapidly:
"For the most part, the manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we produced all customer sales."
During the next couple of weeks key milestones in the recovery process were accomplished through close collaboration between Progent consultants and the customer:
- Internal web sites were returned to operation without losing any information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million archived messages was restored to operations and accessible to users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory modules were fully functional.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was set up and programmed.
- Ninety percent of the user desktops and notebooks were fully operational.
"So much of what was accomplished that first week is nearly entirely a haze for me, but our team will not soon forget the dedication each of the team accomplished to give us our company back. I've utilized Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This time was the most impressive ever."
Conclusion
A possible business disaster was avoided through the efforts of hard-working experts, a wide range of knowledge, and tight teamwork. Although upon completion of forensics the ransomware virus attack detailed here should have been identified and blocked with current security systems and best practices, user and IT administrator training, and appropriate security procedures for data protection and applying software patches, the reality remains that state-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware virus, feel confident that Progent's roster of experts has extensive experience in ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and data restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others that were involved), thank you for making it so I could get rested after we made it over the most critical parts. All of you did an impressive effort, and if anyone is around the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
