Crypto-Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Disaster
Ransomware has become an escalating cyberplague that poses an enterprise-level danger for organizations poorly prepared for an assault. Versions of ransomware like the Reveton, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for a long time and continue to cause havoc. Modern variants of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Egregor, as well as more unnamed malware, not only encrypt online information but also infect all available system protection. Data replicated to cloud environments can also be held hostage. In a poorly architected system, it can make automated recovery impossible and effectively sets the entire system back to zero.
Retrieving applications and information after a crypto-ransomware attack becomes a sprint against time as the targeted organization fights to contain, remove the ransomware, and resume business-critical activity. Since ransomware takes time to spread, penetrations are often sprung during nights and weekends, when penetrations in many cases take more time to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of rapidly mobilizing and coordinating a qualified mitigation team.
Progent has an assortment of help services for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are team member education to help identify and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, plus deployment of modern security solutions with AI technology from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine day-zero cyber attacks automatically. Progent also provides the assistance of seasoned ransomware recovery consultants with the track record and commitment to rebuild a compromised environment as quickly as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
Subsequent to a ransomware attack, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that distant criminals will respond with the keys to unencrypt all your data. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their information even after having paid the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The fallback is to re-install the mission-critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of essential information backups, this calls for a broad range of skill sets, top notch project management, and the capability to work continuously until the task is finished.
For twenty years, Progent has offered professional IT services for companies across the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded top industry certifications in important technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's security experts have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience in financial management and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the capability to efficiently understand critical systems and re-organize the surviving components of your IT environment after a ransomware event and assemble them into a functioning network.
Progent's ransomware group uses state-of-the-art project management systems to orchestrate the complicated recovery process. Progent understands the urgency of working quickly and in unison with a customer's management and IT staff to assign priority to tasks and to put the most important applications back on-line as soon as humanly possible.
Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Intrusion Restoration
A customer hired Progent after their company was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been launched by Northern Korean state hackers, suspected of using algorithms leaked from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk targets specific businesses with little room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware viruses. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing company located in Chicago and has around 500 staff members. The Ryuk intrusion had frozen all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the beginning of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and praying for good luck, but ultimately reached out to Progent.
"I cannot speak enough about the care Progent gave us during the most critical period of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group provided us. That you could get our e-mail and critical servers back on-line sooner than 1 week was earth shattering. Each expert I got help from or communicated with at Progent was urgently focused on getting us operational and was working 24/7 to bail us out."
Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly understand and prioritize the key elements that needed to be restored to make it possible to resume company functions:
- Active Directory
- Microsoft Exchange Email
- MRP System
To start, Progent adhered to Anti-virus incident response best practices by stopping the spread and clearing infected systems. Progent then initiated the work of restoring Windows Active Directory, the heart of enterprise systems built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not operate without Windows AD, and the customer's financials and MRP software used SQL Server, which requires Active Directory for access to the data.
Within 48 hours, Progent was able to re-build Windows Active Directory to its pre-penetration state. Progent then performed rebuilding and storage recovery on needed servers. All Microsoft Exchange Server schema and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to find non-encrypted OST data files (Outlook Off-Line Data Files) on team desktop computers in order to recover mail messages. A not too old off-line backup of the client's financials/ERP software made them able to restore these essential applications back servicing users. Although a lot of work remained to recover fully from the Ryuk attack, core systems were recovered rapidly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation showed little impact and we did not miss any customer deliverables."
Over the next few weeks important milestones in the restoration process were achieved through close cooperation between Progent consultants and the client:
- In-house web sites were returned to operation without losing any information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than four million historical messages was brought online and available for users.
- CRM/Product Ordering/Invoices/AP/AR/Inventory modules were fully recovered.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was set up and programmed.
- Nearly all of the user workstations were operational.
"So much of what occurred in the early hours is nearly entirely a fog for me, but my team will not soon forget the countless hours all of your team put in to help get our business back. I've been working with Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and each time Progent has come through and delivered. This situation was the most impressive ever."
Conclusion
A probable business-killing disaster was evaded through the efforts of dedicated experts, a broad spectrum of knowledge, and tight teamwork. Although in retrospect the ransomware penetration detailed here could have been disabled with current security technology and security best practices, team education, and well thought out security procedures for backup and proper patching controls, the reality remains that state-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are not going away. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus defense, remediation, and file recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (and any others that were helping), thank you for making it so I could get some sleep after we got through the first week. All of you did an fabulous effort, and if anyone is around the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
