Ransomware : Your Feared IT Nightmare
Crypto-Ransomware Recovery ExpertsRansomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that represents an extinction-level danger for organizations poorly prepared for an assault. Multiple generations of ransomware such as CrySIS, CryptoWall, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for years and still inflict damage. More recent strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, along with frequent as yet unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt online critical data but also infiltrate most accessible system backup. Files replicated to the cloud can also be ransomed. In a poorly designed data protection solution, this can make automated restoration impossible and basically sets the datacenter back to square one.

Getting back services and information after a ransomware attack becomes a race against the clock as the targeted organization fights to stop lateral movement, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and restore enterprise-critical activity. Since ransomware takes time to move laterally, attacks are frequently launched on weekends, when successful penetrations tend to take more time to notice. This compounds the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and orchestrating a capable response team.

Progent provides a range of help services for securing enterprises from ransomware events. These include user education to help recognize and avoid phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of modern security solutions with artificial intelligence capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine new cyber threats intelligently. Progent in addition offers the assistance of seasoned crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and perseverance to re-deploy a compromised system as soon as possible.

Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Help
Subsequent to a ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that distant criminals will provide the keys to unencrypt any of your files. Kaspersky ascertained that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data after having paid the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions. The other path is to re-install the mission-critical parts of your IT environment. Without the availability of full system backups, this requires a wide complement of skill sets, well-coordinated project management, and the willingness to work continuously until the recovery project is done.

For decades, Progent has offered certified expert Information Technology services for companies throughout the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts includes professionals who have earned high-level industry certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in accounting and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the capability to knowledgably identify necessary systems and organize the surviving parts of your IT environment following a crypto-ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning network.

Progent's ransomware team of experts deploys best of breed project management applications to coordinate the complex recovery process. Progent understands the urgency of working rapidly and in concert with a customer's management and IT resources to assign priority to tasks and to put critical applications back online as fast as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Penetration Restoration
A client hired Progent after their organization was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been created by Northern Korean government sponsored criminal gangs, suspected of adopting algorithms leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk goes after specific organizations with little room for operational disruption and is among the most profitable incarnations of crypto-ransomware. Well Known targets include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing business based in Chicago and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk penetration had paralyzed all business operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's system backups had been on-line at the start of the intrusion and were damaged. The client considered paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200K) and praying for the best, but in the end engaged Progent.

"I can't say enough in regards to the expertise Progent provided us throughout the most fearful period of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the cybercriminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group afforded us. That you could get our messaging and key applications back sooner than 1 week was incredible. Each person I worked with or texted at Progent was urgently focused on getting us operational and was working all day and night on our behalf."

Progent worked with the customer to rapidly assess and assign priority to the essential areas that had to be addressed to make it possible to continue company operations:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Financials/MRP
To start, Progent adhered to Anti-virus incident response best practices by stopping lateral movement and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then initiated the process of bringing back online Microsoft AD, the heart of enterprise systems built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not function without Windows AD, and the businesses' accounting and MRP software leveraged SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory for security authorization to the databases.

In less than two days, Progent was able to re-build Active Directory services to its pre-penetration state. Progent then accomplished setup and hard drive recovery of critical servers. All Exchange Server data and configuration information were usable, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect local OST data files (Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on team workstations to recover mail data. A not too old offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP systems made it possible to restore these essential services back online for users. Although significant work still had to be done to recover totally from the Ryuk event, essential systems were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the manufacturing operation never missed a beat and we produced all customer shipments."

Throughout the next couple of weeks important milestones in the restoration project were completed in close collaboration between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • Self-hosted web sites were returned to operation with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over four million archived emails was brought online and available for users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control capabilities were completely functional.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought online.
  • Ninety percent of the user workstations were functioning as before the incident.

"So much of what went on in the early hours is mostly a fog for me, but I will not forget the dedication each and every one of the team put in to give us our company back. I have been working with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and each time Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This time was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A potential business extinction disaster was avoided by top-tier experts, a wide spectrum of subject matter expertise, and close collaboration. Although in post mortem the crypto-ransomware penetration described here should have been identified and blocked with current cyber security technology and recognized best practices, user training, and well designed incident response procedures for data protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the reality remains that state-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware attack, remember that Progent's team of experts has extensive experience in ransomware virus defense, cleanup, and information systems recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others that were helping), thanks very much for making it so I could get rested after we made it over the most critical parts. Everyone did an fabulous job, and if anyone that helped is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
