Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Disaster
Ransomware Recovery ProfessionalsCrypto-Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that represents an extinction-level threat for organizations vulnerable to an assault. Multiple generations of crypto-ransomware such as CrySIS, CryptoWall, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for many years and still cause damage. Recent versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Nephilim, as well as additional unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt on-line data files but also infiltrate many accessible system protection mechanisms. Data synchronized to cloud environments can also be held hostage. In a vulnerable system, this can make any restoration impossible and effectively knocks the entire system back to zero.

Recovering programs and information after a ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted organization fights to stop lateral movement, cleanup the crypto-ransomware, and restore mission-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware requires time to move laterally, penetrations are usually launched on weekends, when successful attacks typically take longer to notice. This compounds the difficulty of quickly marshalling and orchestrating a qualified mitigation team.

Progent provides a range of solutions for protecting enterprises from ransomware events. Among these are user training to help recognize and avoid phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of modern security solutions with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and suppress new threats automatically. Progent also can provide the services of expert crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the talent and perseverance to restore a breached network as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
After a ransomware penetration, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will respond with the needed codes to unencrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that seventeen percent of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions. The alternative is to re-install the mission-critical components of your IT environment. Absent the availability of complete data backups, this requires a wide range of skills, well-coordinated project management, and the ability to work non-stop until the recovery project is over.

For decades, Progent has made available expert Information Technology services for companies throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes engineers who have attained advanced industry certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity specialists have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience with accounting and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience affords Progent the capability to quickly identify important systems and re-organize the surviving parts of your IT environment following a crypto-ransomware penetration and assemble them into an operational network.

Progent's security team of experts has top notch project management applications to orchestrate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent understands the urgency of acting quickly and in unison with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to get essential applications back online as fast as humanly possible.

Customer Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Intrusion Restoration
A small business escalated to Progent after their network system was taken over by Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been developed by North Korean state sponsored criminal gangs, possibly adopting algorithms leaked from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific companies with little or no ability to sustain operational disruption and is among the most lucrative versions of crypto-ransomware. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing company located in Chicago with around 500 staff members. The Ryuk event had disabled all essential operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's data protection had been on-line at the time of the attack and were eventually encrypted. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom (more than $200K) and praying for the best, but in the end brought in Progent.

"I cannot thank you enough in regards to the support Progent provided us throughout the most stressful period of (our) company's existence. We most likely would have paid the cybercriminals if not for the confidence the Progent group afforded us. The fact that you could get our e-mail system and production servers back online sooner than one week was something I thought impossible. Each consultant I interacted with or e-mailed at Progent was urgently focused on getting us restored and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."

Progent worked with the client to quickly get our arms around and prioritize the critical areas that needed to be restored in order to resume departmental operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Electronic Mail
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To begin, Progent adhered to Anti-virus event response industry best practices by halting lateral movement and performing virus removal steps. Progent then initiated the process of rebuilding Microsoft Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built on Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not operate without AD, and the client's accounting and MRP system used Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Active Directory services for security authorization to the information.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then accomplished rebuilding and storage recovery on needed systems. All Exchange Server ties and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to assemble local OST data files (Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on various desktop computers in order to recover mail information. A not too old off-line backup of the client's financials/MRP software made them able to restore these required services back online. Although a large amount of work needed to be completed to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, critical services were restored quickly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation ran fairly normal throughout and we did not miss any customer deliverables."

During the next few weeks critical milestones in the restoration process were accomplished through close cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • Internal web sites were restored with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding 4 million archived messages was brought online and available for users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory functions were fully functional.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was brought on-line.
  • 90% of the user workstations were back into operation.

"A huge amount of what happened in the initial days is mostly a blur for me, but my management will not soon forget the commitment all of your team accomplished to give us our business back. I have utilized Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and every time Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This event was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A likely company-ending disaster was evaded due to top-tier experts, a wide range of technical expertise, and close teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the crypto-ransomware penetration detailed here should have been identified and prevented with up-to-date security solutions and NIST Cybersecurity Framework or ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, team education, and well designed incident response procedures for information protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact remains that government-sponsored hackers from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware attack, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus defense, remediation, and data disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were helping), I'm grateful for allowing me to get some sleep after we got past the most critical parts. Everyone did an impressive job, and if anyone that helped is around the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
