Crypto-Ransomware : Your Feared IT Disaster
Crypto-Ransomware Recovery ExpertsCrypto-Ransomware has become a modern cyberplague that presents an enterprise-level danger for businesses vulnerable to an attack. Different versions of ransomware like the Reveton, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for years and continue to cause harm. Recent versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, plus daily as yet unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of on-line data but also infiltrate most configured system restores and backups. Files synchronized to the cloud can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed system, this can render automated restore operations useless and basically sets the datacenter back to square one.

Getting back programs and data following a ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business tries its best to stop the spread, clear the ransomware, and resume enterprise-critical activity. Because ransomware takes time to spread, assaults are usually launched on weekends, when successful penetrations tend to take longer to detect. This compounds the difficulty of quickly assembling and orchestrating a capable response team.

Progent has an assortment of help services for protecting organizations from ransomware attacks. These include staff education to help identify and avoid phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to setup and configuration of next-generation security gateways with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to detect and extinguish day-zero cyber threats automatically. Progent also offers the assistance of veteran ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and perseverance to restore a compromised environment as quickly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
Following a ransomware invasion, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that cyber criminals will return the needed codes to unencrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky estimated that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their files after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions. The other path is to setup from scratch the critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to essential information backups, this calls for a broad complement of skills, professional team management, and the willingness to work non-stop until the task is completed.

For twenty years, Progent has made available professional IT services for businesses throughout the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes professionals who have earned high-level industry certifications in leading technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security engineers have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience with accounting and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience provides Progent the capability to efficiently ascertain critical systems and consolidate the remaining parts of your IT environment following a ransomware event and rebuild them into an operational system.

Progent's ransomware team of experts utilizes best of breed project management applications to coordinate the complicated restoration process. Progent understands the importance of acting rapidly and together with a client's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to get key services back online as soon as humanly possible.

Business Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Recovery
A customer hired Progent after their network was brought down by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been launched by Northern Korean state sponsored hackers, suspected of using algorithms leaked from the United States National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific organizations with limited room for disruption and is one of the most profitable examples of ransomware malware. High publicized targets include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a regional manufacturing business based in Chicago with around 500 staff members. The Ryuk intrusion had disabled all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's backups had been online at the time of the intrusion and were eventually encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom (exceeding $200K) and hoping for the best, but in the end brought in Progent.

"I cannot speak enough about the help Progent provided us during the most fearful time of (our) company's survival. We would have paid the cyber criminals behind the attack if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group gave us. The fact that you could get our e-mail system and essential servers back online sooner than seven days was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single expert I spoke to or e-mailed at Progent was absolutely committed on getting my company operational and was working non-stop on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the client to quickly understand and prioritize the essential elements that needed to be addressed in order to restart business functions:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Email
  • Financials/MRP
To start, Progent adhered to Anti-virus penetration response industry best practices by isolating and disinfecting systems. Progent then began the task of bringing back online Microsoft Active Directory, the heart of enterprise systems built on Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not function without AD, and the client's accounting and MRP software utilized Microsoft SQL, which requires Active Directory services for authentication to the data.

Within two days, Progent was able to re-build Active Directory services to its pre-virus state. Progent then completed rebuilding and storage recovery on critical systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server schema and attributes were usable, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to collect non-encrypted OST data files (Outlook Offline Data Files) on user PCs and laptops to recover mail messages. A recent off-line backup of the businesses financials/ERP software made it possible to return these required programs back online for users. Although a lot of work was left to recover completely from the Ryuk attack, critical services were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation ran fairly normal throughout and we made all customer deliverables."

Over the following few weeks key milestones in the restoration project were achieved through tight cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • In-house web sites were returned to operation without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Server containing more than 4 million historical messages was spun up and available for users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/AR/Inventory capabilities were completely operational.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was installed and configured.
  • Most of the user workstations were fully operational.

"Much of what happened during the initial response is mostly a blur for me, but my management will not forget the care all of the team accomplished to give us our company back. I have utilized Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered. This situation was a Herculean accomplishment."

Conclusion
A likely company-ending catastrophe was avoided with dedicated experts, a broad array of subject matter expertise, and tight teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the ransomware attack detailed here could have been identified and stopped with current cyber security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework or ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, staff training, and appropriate incident response procedures for information backup and applying software patches, the reality remains that state-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are not going away. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incursion, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus defense, cleanup, and file disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were involved), thanks very much for making it so I could get some sleep after we got through the initial fire. Everyone did an amazing effort, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
