Crypto-Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Disaster
Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsCrypto-Ransomware has become a modern cyberplague that presents an enterprise-level threat for organizations unprepared for an assault. Different versions of crypto-ransomware such as Reveton, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for many years and continue to inflict destruction. Recent versions of crypto-ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Nephilim, as well as daily as yet unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of on-line data but also infect most configured system restores and backups. Data synched to cloud environments can also be ransomed. In a poorly architected data protection solution, it can render automated restore operations hopeless and effectively sets the network back to square one.

Recovering programs and data after a ransomware outage becomes a race against time as the targeted organization tries its best to contain the damage, remove the ransomware, and resume mission-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware needs time to replicate, assaults are usually launched at night, when successful penetrations in many cases take longer to discover. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly marshalling and orchestrating a qualified response team.

Progent makes available a range of solutions for protecting organizations from crypto-ransomware attacks. These include team education to help identify and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, plus setup and configuration of modern security solutions with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish zero-day threats intelligently. Progent also can provide the services of experienced ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and perseverance to re-deploy a breached system as urgently as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
Soon after a ransomware event, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will respond with the keys to unencrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky estimated that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions. The fallback is to piece back together the vital elements of your Information Technology environment. Without access to essential data backups, this calls for a wide range of skill sets, top notch project management, and the capability to work continuously until the job is complete.

For decades, Progent has made available professional IT services for businesses throughout the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have attained high-level certifications in important technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of experience affords Progent the skills to efficiently determine important systems and organize the surviving pieces of your computer network environment following a crypto-ransomware event and configure them into an operational network.

Progent's recovery group utilizes state-of-the-art project management tools to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working swiftly and in concert with a customer's management and IT staff to assign priority to tasks and to put the most important applications back on-line as fast as humanly possible.

Business Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Response
A business escalated to Progent after their company was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been developed by North Korean state criminal gangs, possibly using technology leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific businesses with little ability to sustain disruption and is one of the most profitable versions of ransomware. High publicized victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing business headquartered in the Chicago metro area with around 500 employees. The Ryuk event had disabled all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's backups had been on-line at the start of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200,000) and praying for good luck, but ultimately made the decision to use Progent.

"I cannot thank you enough in regards to the care Progent provided us throughout the most critical time of (our) businesses survival. We may have had to pay the criminal gangs except for the confidence the Progent group provided us. That you could get our e-mail system and important applications back on-line quicker than five days was beyond my wildest dreams. Each person I worked with or messaged at Progent was amazingly focused on getting our system up and was working day and night to bail us out."

Progent worked with the client to quickly assess and assign priority to the essential areas that needed to be recovered to make it possible to resume departmental functions:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Email
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To start, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes incident mitigation industry best practices by isolating and removing active viruses. Progent then initiated the task of rebuilding Microsoft AD, the core of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not operate without Active Directory, and the businesses' MRP system utilized SQL Server, which needs Windows AD for access to the database.

In less than 2 days, Progent was able to re-build Windows Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then initiated setup and hard drive recovery on needed systems. All Exchange ties and attributes were usable, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect intact OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Data Files) on team PCs in order to recover mail information. A recent offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP software made them able to restore these essential applications back available to users. Although significant work needed to be completed to recover completely from the Ryuk virus, essential systems were restored rapidly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation ran fairly normal throughout and we delivered all customer orders."

During the following few weeks key milestones in the recovery process were completed in tight collaboration between Progent team members and the customer:

  • Internal web applications were returned to operation without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Server containing more than 4 million historical messages was spun up and available for users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/AR/Inventory Control modules were fully restored.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was installed and configured.
  • 90% of the user workstations were fully operational.

"So much of what occurred that first week is mostly a haze for me, but we will not forget the countless hours all of your team put in to give us our company back. I have been working together with Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has shined and delivered. This situation was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A probable company-ending disaster was evaded due to top-tier experts, a wide range of knowledge, and tight collaboration. Although in hindsight the ransomware incident described here would have been disabled with up-to-date cyber security solutions and security best practices, user and IT administrator training, and properly executed security procedures for backup and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact is that state-sponsored cyber criminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware incident, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and information systems disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others that were contributing), thank you for letting me get some sleep after we got through the initial push. All of you did an incredible effort, and if anyone is in the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
