ProSight Ransomware Preparedness ReportRansomware has been widely adopted by the major cyber-crime organizations and rogue governments, representing a potentially existential risk to companies that fall victim. Modern versions of crypto-ransomware target everything, including backup, making even selective recovery a challenging and costly exercise. New variations of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Phobos, LockBit and Nephilim have made the headlines, displacing WannaCry, Cerber, and CryptoWall in prominence, elaborateness, and destructive impact.

90% of crypto-ransomware breaches are the result of innocent-seeming emails with malicious hyperlinks or file attachments, and a high percentage are so-called "zero-day" attacks that elude the defenses of legacy signature-matching antivirus tools. Although user training and frontline identification are important to protect your network against ransomware, leading practices dictate that you expect that some malware will inevitably get through and that you prepare a strong backup solution that enables you to restore files and services rapidly with little if any losses.

Progent's ProSight Ransomware Preparedness Checkup is an ultra-affordable service built around an online discussion with a Progent security consultant experienced in ransomware defense and repair. In the course of this interview Progent will work with your Ribeirão Preto network managers to collect pertinent data about your security setup and backup environment. Progent will use this data to create a Basic Security and Best Practices Report documenting how to adhere to leading practices for implementing and administering your cybersecurity and backup systems to prevent or clean up after a crypto-ransomware attack.

Progent's Basic Security and Best Practices Report highlights key issues associated with ransomware prevention and restoration recovery. The report addresses:

Security

  • Proper allocation and use of admin accounts
  • Correct NTFS and SMB (Server Message Block) permissions
  • Optimal firewall setup
  • Safe RDP access
  • Advice about AntiVirus (AV) tools identification and deployment
Backups
  • Split permission architecture for backup integrity
  • Backing up key servers such as Active Directory
  • Offsite backups with cloud backup to Azure
The online interview included with the ProSight Ransomware Preparedness Assessment service takes about one hour for the average small company and requires more time for bigger or more complicated environments. The report document features suggestions for enhancing your ability to ward off or recover from a ransomware attack and Progent offers on-demand expertise to help you and your IT staff to design and deploy an efficient security/backup system customized for your specific needs.

About Ransomware
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts or steals files so they cannot be used or are made publicly available. Crypto-ransomware sometimes locks the target's computer. To avoid the damage, the target is required to send a specified amount of money (the ransom), usually in the form of a crypto currency like Bitcoin, within a brief period of time. It is not guaranteed that delivering the extortion price will recover the lost data or prevent its publication. Files can be encrypted or erased across a network depending on the victim's write permissions, and you cannot break the strong encryption technologies used on the hostage files. A typical ransomware delivery package is tainted email, whereby the target is lured into responding to by means of a social engineering exploit called spear phishing. This causes the email to look as though it came from a trusted source. Another popular vulnerability is a poorly secured Remote Desktop Protocol port.

The ransomware variant CryptoLocker ushered in the new age of ransomware in 2013, and the monetary losses caused by the many versions of ransomware is said to be billions of dollars annually, more than doubling every two years. Famous examples are WannaCry, and Petya. Current high-profile variants like Ryuk, DoppelPaymer and Spora are more complex and have caused more havoc than older versions. Even if your backup procedures allow your business to recover your ransomed files, you can still be hurt by so-called exfiltration, where ransomed documents are exposed to the public. Because new versions of ransomware crop up daily, there is no guarantee that traditional signature-matching anti-virus filters will detect the latest attack. If threat does appear in an email, it is important that your users have learned to be aware of social engineering techniques. Your last line of defense is a sound scheme for performing and keeping offsite backups plus the use of reliable recovery tools.
