Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Disaster
Crypto-Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that represents an enterprise-level danger for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an assault. Versions of ransomware like the Reveton, WannaCry, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for many years and continue to inflict havoc. Modern strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Nephilim, as well as more as yet unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of online files but also infect all available system restores and backups. Information synchronized to the cloud can also be held hostage. In a poorly designed environment, it can make any restoration impossible and basically sets the entire system back to square one.
Getting back on-line applications and information after a crypto-ransomware event becomes a sprint against time as the targeted organization fights to contain the damage, clear the virus, and restore business-critical operations. Due to the fact that crypto-ransomware takes time to replicate, attacks are often sprung on weekends, when penetrations are likely to take more time to uncover. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and orchestrating a qualified mitigation team.
Progent has a variety of help services for securing enterprises from ransomware events. These include team member training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to installation of modern security appliances with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to identify and disable zero-day threats quickly. Progent in addition can provide the services of seasoned ransomware recovery consultants with the talent and perseverance to re-deploy a breached network as soon as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Recovery Help
Subsequent to a ransomware penetration, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will return the needed keys to decipher any or all of your files. Kaspersky ascertained that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their files after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The fallback is to piece back together the critical parts of your Information Technology environment. Absent the availability of essential data backups, this requires a broad complement of skill sets, well-coordinated project management, and the ability to work 24x7 until the task is over.
For decades, Progent has offered professional Information Technology services for companies across the U.S. and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have earned top certifications in important technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security engineers have earned internationally-renowned certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise in financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the capability to quickly identify necessary systems and consolidate the surviving pieces of your network system following a ransomware attack and configure them into an operational system.
Progent's security team utilizes state-of-the-art project management applications to coordinate the complex recovery process. Progent understands the importance of working swiftly and together with a client's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to put essential systems back on line as soon as possible.
Client Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Attack Restoration
A business engaged Progent after their network system was crashed by Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been launched by North Korean state hackers, possibly adopting approaches leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific businesses with little or no tolerance for disruption and is among the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware. Headline targets include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a small manufacturer headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 staff members. The Ryuk penetration had brought down all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's system backups had been on-line at the beginning of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and hoping for good luck, but in the end reached out to Progent.
"I can't say enough about the help Progent provided us throughout the most fearful period of (our) businesses life. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals behind the attack if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group gave us. The fact that you could get our messaging and key applications back on-line in less than a week was amazing. Every single person I spoke to or communicated with at Progent was laser focused on getting us working again and was working 24/7 to bail us out."
Progent worked hand in hand the client to rapidly determine and prioritize the mission critical areas that needed to be restored to make it possible to continue departmental functions:
- Active Directory
- Microsoft Exchange Email
- Accounting/MRP
To get going, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes incident mitigation best practices by stopping lateral movement and removing active viruses. Progent then initiated the steps of restoring Microsoft Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise networks built on Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange email will not function without AD, and the client's financials and MRP system used SQL Server, which needs Windows AD for access to the databases.
Within two days, Progent was able to rebuild Windows Active Directory to its pre-penetration state. Progent then helped perform reinstallations and storage recovery on mission critical applications. All Exchange ties and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect non-encrypted OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Data Files) on various PCs to recover mail data. A recent offline backup of the client's financials/ERP software made it possible to restore these required programs back on-line. Although significant work was left to recover completely from the Ryuk event, critical services were restored rapidly:
"For the most part, the manufacturing operation ran fairly normal throughout and we did not miss any customer orders."
Throughout the next few weeks key milestones in the restoration process were completed in tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the customer:
- Internal web applications were brought back up with no loss of information.
- The MailStore Exchange Server containing more than four million archived emails was brought online and accessible to users.
- CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable (AP)/AR/Inventory Control capabilities were fully functional.
- A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was brought online.
- Nearly all of the desktops and laptops were operational.
"A lot of what happened that first week is mostly a haze for me, but I will not soon forget the dedication each and every one of the team put in to give us our company back. I have been working with Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This event was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A likely enterprise-killing catastrophe was evaded through the efforts of dedicated professionals, a wide range of technical expertise, and close collaboration. Although upon completion of forensics the ransomware virus incident detailed here would have been identified and prevented with advanced security systems and best practices, team education, and properly executed security procedures for information protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact remains that state-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware penetration, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and information systems disaster recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others that were involved), I'm grateful for letting me get some sleep after we got over the initial fire. All of you did an fabulous job, and if any of your team is in the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
