Ransomware : Your Feared IT Nightmare
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that poses an existential danger for organizations unprepared for an attack. Different iterations of ransomware such as Reveton, Fusob, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for many years and still inflict destruction. More recent variants of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Nephilim, as well as daily unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of on-line information but also infect many available system backup. Information synched to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a vulnerable data protection solution, it can make any recovery impossible and effectively sets the datacenter back to zero.
Recovering services and data following a ransomware attack becomes a sprint against time as the targeted organization fights to contain, clear the ransomware, and resume business-critical activity. Since ransomware needs time to move laterally, penetrations are often launched on weekends, when successful penetrations typically take longer to recognize. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly assembling and organizing a knowledgeable response team.
Progent has a range of help services for protecting organizations from ransomware attacks. Among these are team training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to setup and configuration of next-generation security appliances with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine day-zero cyber attacks quickly. Progent also offers the services of veteran ransomware recovery professionals with the talent and commitment to restore a breached network as soon as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
After a ransomware event, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that criminal gangs will respond with the needed keys to unencrypt all your information. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their data even after having paid the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions. The other path is to re-install the essential elements of your IT environment. Absent the availability of full system backups, this calls for a wide range of IT skills, professional team management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the job is completed.
For twenty years, Progent has offered expert IT services for companies throughout the U.S. and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes engineers who have earned advanced certifications in important technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security consultants have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise affords Progent the capability to rapidly determine important systems and organize the remaining pieces of your computer network environment following a ransomware event and configure them into a functioning system.
Progent's security team uses top notch project management applications to orchestrate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent understands the urgency of working rapidly and in unison with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to get key systems back online as fast as humanly possible.
Customer Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Virus Recovery
A customer contacted Progent after their network was brought down by Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been developed by North Korean state cybercriminals, possibly using technology exposed from the United States National Security Agency. Ryuk goes after specific businesses with little ability to sustain disruption and is among the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing company based in Chicago and has about 500 workers. The Ryuk penetration had brought down all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's backups had been on-line at the beginning of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (more than $200K) and praying for good luck, but ultimately engaged Progent.
"I cannot tell you enough in regards to the expertise Progent provided us throughout the most stressful time of (our) businesses existence. We had little choice but to pay the cyber criminals behind the attack if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group afforded us. That you could get our messaging and production servers back online sooner than seven days was incredible. Each consultant I spoke to or communicated with at Progent was urgently focused on getting us back online and was working day and night to bail us out."
Progent worked with the client to quickly understand and assign priority to the mission critical systems that had to be recovered to make it possible to resume company operations:
- Microsoft Active Directory
- Microsoft Exchange Server
- Accounting/MRP
To get going, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes event response best practices by halting lateral movement and removing active viruses. Progent then began the steps of restoring Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange messaging will not operate without Active Directory, and the client's financials and MRP applications utilized SQL Server, which needs Active Directory for access to the databases.
Within 48 hours, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-penetration state. Progent then initiated setup and hard drive recovery on needed systems. All Exchange Server schema and attributes were usable, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate local OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on staff desktop computers in order to recover email data. A recent off-line backup of the businesses accounting systems made them able to restore these essential programs back online for users. Although a large amount of work needed to be completed to recover totally from the Ryuk attack, essential services were restored rapidly:
"For the most part, the manufacturing operation was never shut down and we delivered all customer orders."
Over the following few weeks critical milestones in the recovery process were achieved through close cooperation between Progent engineers and the client:
- Internal web sites were restored with no loss of information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million archived messages was brought on-line and accessible to users.
- CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory functions were fully functional.
- A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought on-line.
- Ninety percent of the user PCs were back into operation.
"A huge amount of what was accomplished those first few days is nearly entirely a blur for me, but I will not soon forget the urgency all of your team put in to help get our company back. I've been working with Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and every time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This time was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A likely business disaster was avoided through the efforts of results-oriented experts, a wide range of subject matter expertise, and tight collaboration. Although in hindsight the crypto-ransomware virus attack detailed here would have been disabled with modern security technology and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, user training, and well designed security procedures for data backup and applying software patches, the reality remains that government-sponsored hackers from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incursion, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has proven experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and data recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were contributing), thank you for allowing me to get rested after we made it past the most critical parts. Everyone did an impressive job, and if anyone that helped is in the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
