Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Disaster
Crypto-Ransomware Remediation ExpertsRansomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that presents an existential danger for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an assault. Different versions of crypto-ransomware such as CrySIS, Fusob, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for years and still cause damage. Newer versions of crypto-ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Nephilim, plus more unnamed malware, not only do encryption of online critical data but also infiltrate most configured system protection mechanisms. Data replicated to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a vulnerable system, this can make automatic recovery useless and effectively sets the datacenter back to zero.

Getting back online applications and data following a ransomware attack becomes a race against the clock as the victim struggles to stop lateral movement, cleanup the ransomware, and resume business-critical activity. Due to the fact that crypto-ransomware needs time to move laterally, attacks are usually launched during nights and weekends, when penetrations are likely to take more time to identify. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly assembling and coordinating an experienced mitigation team.

Progent has a range of support services for protecting enterprises from ransomware events. Among these are staff training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to setup and configuration of the latest generation security gateways with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to identify and suppress day-zero cyber threats quickly. Progent also offers the services of expert ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and commitment to re-deploy a breached environment as urgently as possible.

Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Services
Following a ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that criminal gangs will respond with the needed codes to decrypt any of your information. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions. The other path is to re-install the key components of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of complete information backups, this calls for a wide complement of IT skills, well-coordinated project management, and the ability to work non-stop until the recovery project is done.

For decades, Progent has offered expert IT services for companies throughout the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have attained high-level certifications in leading technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's security experts have earned internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISM, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise with accounting and ERP application software. This breadth of experience gives Progent the capability to knowledgably determine necessary systems and re-organize the remaining components of your network system after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning network.

Progent's ransomware group deploys best of breed project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent understands the urgency of acting rapidly and together with a client's management and Information Technology resources to prioritize tasks and to put the most important applications back online as soon as humanly possible.

Customer Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Recovery
A customer contacted Progent after their network system was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been developed by North Korean state cybercriminals, suspected of using algorithms leaked from the United States National Security Agency. Ryuk targets specific companies with little or no ability to sustain operational disruption and is one of the most lucrative versions of ransomware. High publicized organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing business headquartered in Chicago with about 500 staff members. The Ryuk event had shut down all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's system backups had been on-line at the time of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (in excess of two hundred thousand dollars) and praying for the best, but in the end brought in Progent.

"I can't tell you enough about the care Progent gave us during the most stressful time of (our) company's existence. We would have paid the criminal gangs if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. The fact that you could get our e-mail and essential applications back into operation in less than 1 week was amazing. Each staff member I interacted with or e-mailed at Progent was hell bent on getting us operational and was working breakneck pace to bail us out."

Progent worked with the client to quickly understand and assign priority to the key applications that had to be restored in order to resume departmental operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Financials/MRP
To start, Progent followed ransomware incident response industry best practices by stopping lateral movement and clearing infected systems. Progent then began the process of recovering Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not operate without Windows AD, and the client's financials and MRP system leveraged Microsoft SQL Server, which needs Active Directory for authentication to the databases.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to re-build Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then assisted with rebuilding and storage recovery of critical systems. All Exchange Server ties and configuration information were usable, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to locate local OST files (Outlook Email Off-Line Data Files) on team workstations and laptops in order to recover email messages. A not too old off-line backup of the businesses manufacturing software made it possible to return these required programs back servicing users. Although a lot of work was left to recover totally from the Ryuk virus, the most important systems were restored quickly:

"For the most part, the production line operation never missed a beat and we delivered all customer shipments."

Throughout the next few weeks important milestones in the recovery project were made in close collaboration between Progent engineers and the client:

  • Internal web applications were brought back up without losing any data.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server exceeding four million archived emails was brought on-line and available for users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory functions were fully operational.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was installed and configured.
  • Nearly all of the user PCs were being used by staff.

"A huge amount of what was accomplished that first week is mostly a haze for me, but our team will not soon forget the commitment each of your team put in to give us our business back. I have been working together with Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered. This situation was a Herculean accomplishment."

Conclusion
A likely business-ending catastrophe was evaded by dedicated professionals, a broad array of knowledge, and close teamwork. Although in post mortem the ransomware penetration detailed here should have been prevented with current security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, staff training, and appropriate security procedures for information backup and proper patching controls, the fact remains that government-sponsored cybercriminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware incident, feel confident that Progent's team of experts has proven experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, remediation, and data restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Tony (and any others who were helping), I'm grateful for making it so I could get some sleep after we got over the initial fire. All of you did an impressive job, and if anyone is in the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
