Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that poses an extinction-level danger for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an assault. Different versions of ransomware such as Reveton, WannaCry, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for years and still inflict destruction. Modern variants of crypto-ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, along with more unnamed malware, not only do encryption of online data but also infect any available system restores and backups. Data synchronized to the cloud can also be ransomed. In a vulnerable system, this can make automatic restore operations impossible and basically knocks the network back to zero.
Getting back programs and information following a ransomware attack becomes a sprint against time as the victim struggles to contain the damage, cleanup the virus, and restore enterprise-critical operations. Since ransomware requires time to replicate, assaults are frequently sprung on weekends, when successful attacks typically take longer to uncover. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly assembling and coordinating a qualified response team.
Progent has a variety of help services for securing organizations from crypto-ransomware attacks. These include staff education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of modern security appliances with AI technology from SentinelOne to detect and quarantine zero-day cyber attacks automatically. Progent in addition offers the assistance of expert crypto-ransomware recovery consultants with the skills and perseverance to reconstruct a breached network as quickly as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Restoration Services
After a ransomware event, paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will return the codes to unencrypt any or all of your files. Kaspersky estimated that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their files after having paid the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions. The alternative is to piece back together the essential parts of your IT environment. Absent access to complete data backups, this calls for a wide complement of IT skills, well-coordinated team management, and the ability to work non-stop until the recovery project is completed.
For twenty years, Progent has provided expert Information Technology services for companies throughout the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have earned advanced certifications in key technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security consultants have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of experience affords Progent the ability to rapidly determine important systems and integrate the surviving components of your Information Technology environment after a ransomware penetration and rebuild them into a functioning system.
Progent's recovery team of experts deploys state-of-the-art project management tools to coordinate the complex recovery process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working rapidly and in concert with a client's management and IT resources to assign priority to tasks and to put the most important systems back on-line as soon as possible.
Customer Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Penetration Response
A business hired Progent after their network system was penetrated by Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been deployed by North Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of adopting approaches leaked from America's NSA organization. Ryuk targets specific organizations with little or no ability to sustain disruption and is among the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware viruses. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturer headquartered in the Chicago metro area with about 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all company operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been directly accessible at the start of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom (exceeding $200,000) and praying for good luck, but in the end utilized Progent.
"I can't say enough about the expertise Progent gave us during the most fearful period of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the cybercriminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent team provided us. That you were able to get our e-mail and key servers back on-line faster than five days was something I thought impossible. Each person I worked with or messaged at Progent was urgently focused on getting us back on-line and was working 24 by 7 to bail us out."
Progent worked with the customer to quickly understand and prioritize the key areas that needed to be recovered in order to continue departmental operations:
- Active Directory
- E-Mail
- Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To get going, Progent followed Anti-virus penetration mitigation best practices by stopping the spread and disinfecting systems. Progent then initiated the steps of recovering Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise networks built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not function without AD, and the client's financials and MRP system used Microsoft SQL Server, which needs Windows AD for security authorization to the databases.
In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to recover Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then helped perform reinstallations and hard drive recovery on critical applications. All Exchange schema and attributes were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to locate non-encrypted OST files (Outlook Email Off-Line Folder Files) on user workstations in order to recover mail information. A recent off-line backup of the customer's financials/MRP systems made it possible to return these required applications back on-line. Although a lot of work needed to be completed to recover fully from the Ryuk damage, core services were restored quickly:
"For the most part, the production operation did not miss a beat and we made all customer deliverables."
During the following month important milestones in the restoration project were made in tight collaboration between Progent team members and the customer:
- In-house web applications were brought back up without losing any data.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding 4 million archived emails was brought on-line and available for users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory Control modules were fully recovered.
- A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was installed.
- 90% of the user workstations were being used by staff.
"So much of what was accomplished in the early hours is nearly entirely a blur for me, but we will not soon forget the care each of your team accomplished to give us our business back. I've been working with Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and every time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered. This event was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A potential business-killing disaster was avoided through the efforts of dedicated experts, a wide spectrum of knowledge, and close collaboration. Although in retrospect the ransomware penetration described here could have been prevented with up-to-date cyber security technology solutions and ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, user education, and properly executed security procedures for backup and applying software patches, the fact remains that government-sponsored cybercriminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware incursion, remember that Progent's roster of experts has a proven track record in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, remediation, and data recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were helping), thank you for letting me get some sleep after we made it through the most critical parts. Everyone did an amazing job, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
