Crypto-Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Nightmare
Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsRansomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that poses an enterprise-level danger for businesses of all sizes unprepared for an assault. Different versions of crypto-ransomware such as Reveton, CryptoWall, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for a long time and continue to inflict damage. Newer versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, as well as frequent as yet unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt on-line data but also infiltrate all available system backup. Information synchronized to the cloud can also be held hostage. In a poorly designed data protection solution, it can render any restoration impossible and basically sets the network back to square one.

Restoring programs and data following a ransomware outage becomes a sprint against time as the targeted organization tries its best to contain the damage, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and resume enterprise-critical operations. Since crypto-ransomware requires time to replicate, attacks are usually sprung on weekends, when attacks tend to take more time to discover. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly assembling and orchestrating a qualified response team.

Progent makes available a variety of support services for securing businesses from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are team member education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of modern security gateways with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to discover and disable zero-day cyber threats rapidly. Progent in addition provides the assistance of seasoned ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and perseverance to restore a compromised system as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Support Services
Following a ransomware invasion, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will return the needed keys to decipher any or all of your information. Kaspersky estimated that seventeen percent of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their data even after having paid the ransom, resulting in more losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions. The alternative is to piece back together the essential elements of your IT environment. Absent the availability of essential information backups, this requires a wide complement of skill sets, top notch team management, and the capability to work continuously until the task is complete.

For two decades, Progent has provided professional Information Technology services for businesses throughout the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts includes consultants who have attained high-level industry certifications in important technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have garnered internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with accounting and ERP applications. This breadth of experience gives Progent the capability to rapidly determine critical systems and organize the surviving components of your computer network system after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into an operational network.

Progent's security group has powerful project management tools to coordinate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent appreciates the importance of acting quickly and together with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to put key systems back on line as fast as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Penetration Response
A client contacted Progent after their network system was brought down by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is believed to have been developed by Northern Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, possibly adopting technology leaked from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk targets specific businesses with little tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable iterations of ransomware. High publicized victims include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing business located in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 employees. The Ryuk attack had disabled all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the start of the intrusion and were damaged. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom (more than two hundred thousand dollars) and praying for good luck, but ultimately called Progent.

"I can't speak enough about the care Progent provided us throughout the most critical time of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals if not for the confidence the Progent team provided us. The fact that you could get our messaging and key servers back on-line sooner than five days was beyond my wildest dreams. Each person I got help from or texted at Progent was totally committed on getting us restored and was working at all hours to bail us out."

Progent worked with the customer to rapidly understand and prioritize the key systems that needed to be restored to make it possible to continue departmental functions:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To start, Progent followed Anti-virus incident mitigation best practices by isolating and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then started the steps of recovering Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not work without Windows AD, and the client's MRP system used SQL Server, which needs Active Directory for security authorization to the databases.

In less than two days, Progent was able to recover Windows Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then helped perform setup and storage recovery of needed systems. All Exchange ties and attributes were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to find non-encrypted OST data files (Outlook Email Offline Data Files) on user desktop computers in order to recover mail data. A recent off-line backup of the customer's manufacturing systems made it possible to restore these vital applications back online. Although a lot of work needed to be completed to recover completely from the Ryuk event, essential services were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation never missed a beat and we made all customer orders."

During the following month critical milestones in the restoration project were completed in tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the client:

  • Internal web sites were returned to operation without losing any data.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server with over four million historical messages was restored to operations and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory Control functions were 100% restored.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought online.
  • Ninety percent of the user workstations were fully operational.

"Much of what was accomplished in the early hours is mostly a blur for me, but my team will not soon forget the care all of the team accomplished to give us our business back. I've been working together with Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This time was a life saver."

Conclusion
A potential business disaster was averted by hard-working professionals, a broad spectrum of knowledge, and tight teamwork. Although in hindsight the ransomware virus incident detailed here should have been shut down with modern security technology and best practices, user and IT administrator education, and well designed security procedures for information backup and applying software patches, the fact is that state-sponsored hackers from Russia, China and elsewhere are relentless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a ransomware virus, remember that Progent's roster of experts has a proven track record in ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and information systems disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were contributing), I'm grateful for allowing me to get rested after we got over the initial fire. Everyone did an incredible job, and if any of your guys is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
