Ransomware : Your Feared IT Disaster
Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsRansomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that presents an existential threat for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an assault. Versions of ransomware like the Dharma, WannaCry, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for a long time and continue to cause destruction. Newer variants of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Nephilim, along with daily as yet unnamed viruses, not only encrypt online data but also infiltrate any configured system restores and backups. Files synchronized to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a poorly architected system, it can render automated restoration hopeless and effectively sets the network back to square one.

Restoring programs and data after a ransomware intrusion becomes a race against time as the targeted business struggles to stop the spread, clear the virus, and resume enterprise-critical activity. Because ransomware requires time to move laterally, penetrations are frequently sprung at night, when successful attacks may take longer to identify. This compounds the difficulty of promptly assembling and orchestrating an experienced response team.

Progent offers an assortment of solutions for protecting organizations from ransomware attacks. Among these are user training to help identify and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, plus installation of the latest generation security gateways with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to detect and disable new cyber attacks intelligently. Progent in addition can provide the services of seasoned crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the talent and perseverance to re-deploy a compromised system as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
After a crypto-ransomware penetration, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that merciless criminals will return the codes to unencrypt any of your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never restored their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The alternative is to piece back together the key elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to essential information backups, this requires a wide range of skill sets, professional project management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the task is complete.

For decades, Progent has made available expert Information Technology services for businesses across the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have been awarded advanced certifications in leading technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security engineers have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise in accounting and ERP software solutions. This breadth of expertise affords Progent the skills to quickly identify critical systems and consolidate the surviving pieces of your computer network system following a crypto-ransomware penetration and configure them into a functioning system.

Progent's security team of experts uses powerful project management systems to coordinate the complex recovery process. Progent knows the urgency of acting rapidly and together with a customer's management and Information Technology resources to prioritize tasks and to put the most important applications back online as fast as possible.

Customer Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Response
A client sought out Progent after their network was taken over by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been created by North Korean state cybercriminals, suspected of using strategies leaked from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific organizations with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable instances of ransomware viruses. Major organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturer headquartered in Chicago with around 500 workers. The Ryuk penetration had paralyzed all business operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the beginning of the attack and were encrypted. The client was pursuing financing for paying the ransom (exceeding $200,000) and hoping for good luck, but in the end called Progent.

"I cannot thank you enough about the care Progent provided us during the most stressful time of (our) company's life. We most likely would have paid the hackers behind this attack except for the confidence the Progent team afforded us. That you could get our e-mail and critical applications back online quicker than 1 week was beyond my wildest dreams. Each staff member I interacted with or communicated with at Progent was hell bent on getting us restored and was working breakneck pace on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the client to quickly get our arms around and assign priority to the most important systems that had to be addressed to make it possible to resume departmental functions:

  • Windows Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • MRP System
To get going, Progent adhered to ransomware penetration response industry best practices by isolating and performing virus removal steps. Progent then began the work of restoring Windows Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Exchange messaging will not work without Active Directory, and the customer's financials and MRP applications used SQL Server, which needs Active Directory services for authentication to the data.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-virus state. Progent then performed setup and hard drive recovery of needed systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server ties and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to assemble intact OST files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Data Files) on various PCs to recover mail messages. A not too old offline backup of the client's accounting systems made it possible to return these vital applications back available to users. Although a lot of work remained to recover fully from the Ryuk event, critical systems were restored quickly:

"For the most part, the production operation never missed a beat and we produced all customer shipments."

During the following few weeks critical milestones in the recovery project were achieved in tight collaboration between Progent team members and the client:

  • In-house web applications were brought back up with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding four million archived messages was brought on-line and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory capabilities were 100% operational.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was installed.
  • 90% of the desktops and laptops were functioning as before the incident.

"So much of what happened those first few days is mostly a blur for me, but my team will not forget the care each and every one of your team accomplished to help get our business back. I've been working with Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and every time Progent has come through and delivered. This situation was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A probable business catastrophe was evaded with results-oriented experts, a wide array of knowledge, and tight collaboration. Although in retrospect the ransomware penetration described here should have been identified and stopped with current cyber security solutions and best practices, team training, and well designed security procedures for information protection and applying software patches, the reality is that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a ransomware virus, feel confident that Progent's roster of experts has a proven track record in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, mitigation, and information systems recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Tony (along with others who were involved), thanks very much for letting me get rested after we made it through the most critical parts. All of you did an incredible effort, and if any of your team is around the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
