Ransomware : Your Feared IT Disaster
Crypto-Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that poses an enterprise-level threat for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an attack. Multiple generations of crypto-ransomware such as Dharma, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and continue to cause destruction. More recent versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Egregor, as well as frequent as yet unnamed viruses, not only encrypt on-line data but also infect most available system backup. Information synched to the cloud can also be held hostage. In a poorly designed system, this can make automated restore operations useless and effectively sets the network back to square one.
Getting back on-line services and information following a ransomware outage becomes a sprint against the clock as the victim tries its best to contain, remove the ransomware, and restore business-critical operations. Due to the fact that ransomware requires time to replicate, attacks are often launched on weekends and holidays, when attacks in many cases take longer to recognize. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly assembling and orchestrating an experienced mitigation team.
Progent provides a range of services for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware events. These include team education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to deployment of next-generation security gateways with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and disable zero-day cyber threats intelligently. Progent in addition offers the assistance of seasoned ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and perseverance to rebuild a breached network as urgently as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Restoration Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware attack, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not ensure that merciless criminals will return the needed codes to decrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky determined that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can reach millions. The fallback is to re-install the key parts of your IT environment. Absent access to complete system backups, this calls for a broad range of IT skills, well-coordinated project management, and the ability to work continuously until the job is done.
For decades, Progent has made available professional IT services for companies across the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes engineers who have earned top industry certifications in key technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's security engineers have earned internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience in financial management and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience gives Progent the skills to rapidly identify critical systems and integrate the surviving parts of your network system after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into an operational network.
Progent's ransomware team utilizes state-of-the-art project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent understands the importance of working rapidly and in unison with a client's management and Information Technology resources to assign priority to tasks and to get essential applications back on line as soon as possible.
Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Attack Restoration
A customer escalated to Progent after their network system was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is generally considered to have been launched by North Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, possibly adopting techniques leaked from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific businesses with little tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable examples of ransomware. Headline targets include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturer located in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 staff members. The Ryuk penetration had disabled all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the beginning of the attack and were eventually encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom (in excess of $200,000) and praying for the best, but ultimately made the decision to use Progent.
"I cannot speak enough in regards to the help Progent provided us throughout the most critical time of (our) businesses life. We most likely would have paid the criminal gangs if not for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. The fact that you could get our messaging and critical applications back quicker than five days was beyond my wildest dreams. Each expert I worked with or texted at Progent was laser focused on getting us operational and was working 24/7 on our behalf."
Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly identify and assign priority to the mission critical elements that needed to be recovered to make it possible to resume company functions:
- Active Directory (AD)
- Microsoft Exchange Server
- Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To get going, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes incident response best practices by isolating and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then started the steps of recovering Windows Active Directory, the core of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not function without Windows AD, and the client's accounting and MRP software leveraged Microsoft SQL, which needs Windows AD for security authorization to the database.
Within 2 days, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then charged ahead with setup and hard drive recovery of mission critical servers. All Exchange Server schema and attributes were usable, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate local OST data files (Outlook Email Off-Line Folder Files) on user workstations to recover mail messages. A not too old offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP systems made it possible to restore these essential applications back online. Although a large amount of work remained to recover fully from the Ryuk damage, core services were returned to operations rapidly:
"For the most part, the assembly line operation did not miss a beat and we produced all customer sales."
Throughout the following couple of weeks important milestones in the recovery process were made through tight cooperation between Progent engineers and the client:
- Self-hosted web sites were brought back up without losing any data.
- The MailStore Exchange Server with over four million historical emails was brought on-line and accessible to users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory Control functions were completely recovered.
- A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was installed.
- 90% of the user workstations were fully operational.
"A huge amount of what occurred in the early hours is mostly a fog for me, but our team will not soon forget the countless hours each and every one of you put in to help get our company back. I've been working with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered. This event was a life saver."
Conclusion
A potential business extinction catastrophe was averted by dedicated professionals, a wide range of knowledge, and tight collaboration. Although in post mortem the ransomware penetration detailed here would have been shut down with current cyber security technology and recognized best practices, user and IT administrator training, and appropriate incident response procedures for information backup and proper patching controls, the reality remains that state-sponsored cyber criminals from China, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus blocking, mitigation, and data disaster recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (and any others who were contributing), thanks very much for making it so I could get some sleep after we made it past the most critical parts. All of you did an impressive effort, and if any of your team is in the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
