Ransomware : Your Worst IT Catastrophe
Crypto-Ransomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that poses an enterprise-level threat for organizations vulnerable to an attack. Versions of crypto-ransomware like the Reveton, CryptoWall, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for a long time and continue to cause havoc. Newer strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, plus frequent unnamed malware, not only do encryption of on-line data but also infect all available system backups. Information synched to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be ransomed. In a poorly architected system, it can render automated restore operations useless and effectively knocks the datacenter back to zero.
Getting back on-line applications and data following a crypto-ransomware intrusion becomes a race against the clock as the victim struggles to stop the spread, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and resume business-critical activity. Because ransomware takes time to spread, assaults are frequently sprung during weekends and nights, when penetrations typically take longer to detect. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and coordinating a capable mitigation team.
Progent makes available a variety of support services for protecting businesses from ransomware events. Among these are user education to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to installation of the latest generation security solutions with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to detect and suppress day-zero cyber threats rapidly. Progent also provides the services of veteran ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and commitment to reconstruct a compromised system as rapidly as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Recovery Support Services
After a crypto-ransomware event, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will return the needed codes to unencrypt any of your information. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The other path is to setup from scratch the essential parts of your IT environment. Without access to complete data backups, this calls for a wide range of skill sets, well-coordinated project management, and the ability to work continuously until the task is finished.
For two decades, Progent has provided expert IT services for businesses across the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts includes consultants who have been awarded top certifications in key technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience in financial management and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the skills to efficiently determine important systems and integrate the remaining components of your computer network system following a ransomware attack and assemble them into a functioning system.
Progent's recovery team utilizes powerful project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working quickly and in concert with a client's management and Information Technology team members to assign priority to tasks and to get essential systems back on line as fast as possible.
Client Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Response
A business escalated to Progent after their company was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is believed to have been launched by Northern Korean state sponsored criminal gangs, suspected of adopting strategies exposed from America's NSA organization. Ryuk seeks specific businesses with little or no ability to sustain operational disruption and is among the most lucrative versions of ransomware malware. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a regional manufacturing company located in Chicago with around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had frozen all company operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the time of the attack and were encrypted. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (more than $200K) and praying for the best, but ultimately made the decision to use Progent.
"I can't thank you enough about the support Progent gave us during the most critical period of (our) company's survival. We had little choice but to pay the cyber criminals behind the attack except for the confidence the Progent group afforded us. The fact that you were able to get our messaging and essential servers back faster than five days was amazing. Every single person I worked with or communicated with at Progent was hell bent on getting us back on-line and was working at all hours to bail us out."
Progent worked hand in hand the client to rapidly assess and assign priority to the critical systems that had to be recovered in order to restart company operations:
- Active Directory (AD)
- Microsoft Exchange
- Accounting/MRP
To begin, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes incident mitigation industry best practices by halting the spread and removing active viruses. Progent then began the process of recovering Microsoft Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise networks built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Exchange messaging will not function without AD, and the client's accounting and MRP software leveraged SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory services for security authorization to the data.
Within 2 days, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then helped perform rebuilding and hard drive recovery of critical systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server ties and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to find intact OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Folder Files) on various desktop computers to recover email messages. A recent offline backup of the customer's accounting/MRP software made them able to recover these vital programs back on-line. Although a lot of work needed to be completed to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, the most important services were recovered quickly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation never missed a beat and we delivered all customer shipments."
Throughout the following couple of weeks important milestones in the restoration process were accomplished through tight cooperation between Progent team members and the client:
- Internal web applications were brought back up without losing any information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over four million archived messages was brought online and available for users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables/Inventory functions were 100% operational.
- A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was brought on-line.
- Most of the user desktops and notebooks were operational.
"A lot of what happened in the early hours is mostly a blur for me, but our team will not forget the urgency each of the team put in to help get our company back. I have been working with Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and each time Progent has shined and delivered as promised. This event was a testament to your capabilities."
Conclusion
A probable enterprise-killing catastrophe was dodged through the efforts of dedicated experts, a broad range of IT skills, and close collaboration. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the crypto-ransomware virus attack detailed here should have been identified and stopped with modern cyber security technology solutions and security best practices, user and IT administrator education, and well designed security procedures for information backup and proper patching controls, the fact remains that state-sponsored hackers from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware virus, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has substantial experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, removal, and data recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (along with others who were involved), thanks very much for letting me get some sleep after we got past the initial push. All of you did an fabulous effort, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
