Crypto-Ransomware : Your Worst Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that represents an existential danger for businesses poorly prepared for an assault. Different iterations of ransomware like the Reveton, Fusob, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for a long time and continue to inflict harm. More recent variants of crypto-ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Egregor, along with daily as yet unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of on-line data but also infect any accessible system backups. Files synched to the cloud can also be corrupted. In a poorly architected system, this can make any recovery impossible and basically sets the entire system back to zero.
Getting back on-line programs and data after a ransomware intrusion becomes a sprint against time as the targeted organization tries its best to stop the spread, clear the ransomware, and resume enterprise-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware requires time to spread, attacks are usually sprung during weekends and nights, when attacks may take longer to uncover. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and coordinating an experienced response team.
Progent has a range of help services for securing organizations from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are team member training to help identify and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of the latest generation security appliances with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to identify and suppress day-zero cyber threats intelligently. Progent also provides the assistance of experienced ransomware recovery consultants with the track record and commitment to reconstruct a breached environment as quickly as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Services
Soon after a ransomware penetration, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not ensure that cyber criminals will return the needed codes to decrypt all your files. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their information even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can reach millions. The fallback is to setup from scratch the vital components of your IT environment. Absent the availability of complete data backups, this requires a broad range of skill sets, top notch project management, and the ability to work 24x7 until the job is completed.
For twenty years, Progent has offered professional IT services for companies across the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes professionals who have been awarded high-level certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity experts have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise with financial management and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience gives Progent the ability to knowledgably identify important systems and re-organize the surviving components of your network environment following a ransomware penetration and rebuild them into an operational network.
Progent's security team has state-of-the-art project management systems to orchestrate the complicated restoration process. Progent knows the urgency of working rapidly and together with a client's management and Information Technology resources to assign priority to tasks and to get critical services back on line as fast as possible.
Client Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Virus Response
A business escalated to Progent after their network was attacked by Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been created by North Korean state criminal gangs, suspected of adopting strategies leaked from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific companies with little or no ability to sustain operational disruption and is one of the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware malware. Headline organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a regional manufacturing company headquartered in Chicago and has around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's system backups had been on-line at the time of the attack and were eventually encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200K) and wishfully thinking for the best, but ultimately reached out to Progent.
"I cannot speak enough about the help Progent gave us throughout the most fearful period of (our) company's survival. We would have paid the criminal gangs if not for the confidence the Progent group provided us. That you could get our e-mail and key servers back quicker than seven days was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single expert I got help from or e-mailed at Progent was hell bent on getting us operational and was working non-stop to bail us out."
Progent worked hand in hand the customer to quickly understand and prioritize the mission critical areas that had to be addressed in order to resume departmental operations:
- Microsoft Active Directory
- Electronic Messaging
- MRP System
To start, Progent adhered to ransomware incident mitigation industry best practices by stopping lateral movement and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then began the work of recovering Windows Active Directory, the core of enterprise environments built on Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not function without Active Directory, and the businesses' accounting and MRP system leveraged Microsoft SQL Server, which needs Active Directory services for security authorization to the information.
In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to rebuild Windows Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then initiated setup and storage recovery of needed applications. All Exchange ties and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect non-encrypted OST data files (Outlook Offline Folder Files) on staff workstations and laptops in order to recover email data. A recent off-line backup of the client's financials/ERP systems made them able to recover these required programs back on-line. Although major work remained to recover completely from the Ryuk attack, core services were returned to operations rapidly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation ran fairly normal throughout and we delivered all customer deliverables."
Throughout the next few weeks key milestones in the recovery process were completed in close collaboration between Progent engineers and the customer:
- Self-hosted web applications were restored with no loss of data.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over four million archived emails was restored to operations and available for users.
- CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory Control capabilities were fully restored.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was deployed.
- 90% of the desktops and laptops were fully operational.
"A lot of what went on in the initial days is mostly a fog for me, but we will not soon forget the care each of the team put in to help get our company back. I've been working together with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered. This situation was a life saver."
Conclusion
A probable business extinction catastrophe was dodged through the efforts of top-tier experts, a wide array of knowledge, and close teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the ransomware virus attack detailed here should have been prevented with current security solutions and best practices, staff training, and well thought out security procedures for backup and applying software patches, the reality remains that government-sponsored cyber criminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incident, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has proven experience in ransomware virus defense, removal, and information systems recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (and any others who were contributing), thanks very much for letting me get some sleep after we got through the initial push. Everyone did an incredible job, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
