Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Nightmare
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that represents an extinction-level threat for organizations unprepared for an attack. Different versions of ransomware such as Dharma, Fusob, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for a long time and continue to cause havoc. Newer strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Nephilim, along with frequent as yet unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of on-line critical data but also infiltrate any accessible system protection mechanisms. Information replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be encrypted. In a vulnerable system, it can make automated restore operations hopeless and effectively sets the datacenter back to zero.

Restoring programs and information after a ransomware event becomes a sprint against time as the targeted business tries its best to stop lateral movement, cleanup the virus, and resume enterprise-critical operations. Due to the fact that ransomware takes time to spread, attacks are often sprung on weekends and holidays, when penetrations typically take longer to recognize. This compounds the difficulty of promptly assembling and organizing a capable mitigation team.

Progent has an assortment of solutions for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware events. These include user training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of the latest generation security gateways with AI capabilities from SentinelOne to detect and suppress new cyber threats intelligently. Progent in addition offers the services of experienced crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and commitment to restore a breached environment as quickly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Support Services
After a crypto-ransomware attack, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that criminal gangs will provide the codes to decipher all your files. Kaspersky Labs estimated that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can be in the millions. The other path is to setup from scratch the key parts of your IT environment. Without the availability of complete system backups, this requires a wide range of IT skills, well-coordinated team management, and the ability to work continuously until the recovery project is complete.

For two decades, Progent has offered professional IT services for companies throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes consultants who have been awarded high-level certifications in important technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience with financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of experience gives Progent the skills to efficiently understand important systems and consolidate the surviving components of your computer network system after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning network.

Progent's ransomware team utilizes powerful project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent understands the importance of acting rapidly and together with a client's management and IT resources to prioritize tasks and to put essential systems back online as soon as possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Virus Recovery
A client engaged Progent after their company was taken over by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been launched by Northern Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of adopting strategies exposed from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk seeks specific organizations with little or no room for disruption and is among the most profitable examples of crypto-ransomware. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a regional manufacturing company headquartered in the Chicago metro area with about 500 staff members. The Ryuk penetration had disabled all company operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's system backups had been directly accessible at the time of the attack and were damaged. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and wishfully thinking for the best, but in the end engaged Progent.

"I can't speak enough about the care Progent gave us throughout the most stressful period of (our) businesses survival. We may have had to pay the cyber criminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent team provided us. That you were able to get our e-mail and key servers back on-line faster than 1 week was beyond my wildest dreams. Each expert I got help from or communicated with at Progent was amazingly focused on getting us restored and was working breakneck pace on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly understand and prioritize the essential areas that needed to be recovered to make it possible to resume company operations:

  • Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Email
  • MRP System
To begin, Progent adhered to Anti-virus penetration mitigation best practices by halting lateral movement and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then began the task of rebuilding Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not operate without AD, and the businesses' financials and MRP software utilized SQL Server, which requires Active Directory for access to the database.

Within 2 days, Progent was able to restore Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then initiated reinstallations and hard drive recovery of the most important applications. All Exchange schema and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect non-encrypted OST data files (Outlook Email Off-Line Data Files) on user desktop computers and laptops to recover email information. A recent off-line backup of the customer's financials/MRP systems made them able to recover these vital programs back on-line. Although a large amount of work remained to recover completely from the Ryuk damage, critical services were recovered quickly:

"For the most part, the manufacturing operation survived unscathed and we made all customer sales."

During the next couple of weeks important milestones in the restoration project were completed through close collaboration between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • Self-hosted web sites were brought back up with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Server exceeding four million archived messages was brought on-line and available for users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable (AP)/AR/Inventory Control modules were completely restored.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought online.
  • Most of the user desktops and notebooks were functioning as before the incident.

"So much of what transpired those first few days is nearly entirely a blur for me, but our team will not forget the commitment each of you accomplished to give us our business back. I have entrusted Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and each time Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This situation was a life saver."

Conclusion
A potential enterprise-killing catastrophe was evaded due to top-tier professionals, a broad spectrum of IT skills, and tight collaboration. Although in hindsight the ransomware incident detailed here would have been prevented with current security technology solutions and ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, user and IT administrator education, and well thought out incident response procedures for information protection and applying software patches, the fact remains that state-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware penetration, feel confident that Progent's team of professionals has substantial experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and file restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Tony (and any others who were contributing), I'm grateful for letting me get some sleep after we got past the first week. Everyone did an fabulous effort, and if any of your team is in the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
