Crypto-Ransomware : Your Worst Information Technology Catastrophe
Crypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyberplague that poses an enterprise-level danger for businesses of all sizes unprepared for an attack. Different iterations of crypto-ransomware such as CrySIS, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for years and continue to inflict damage. Newer variants of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Egregor, plus daily as yet unnamed malware, not only encrypt on-line files but also infect all available system restores and backups. Data replicated to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a poorly architected environment, this can render any restoration hopeless and effectively knocks the entire system back to zero.
Retrieving applications and information after a ransomware attack becomes a race against the clock as the targeted organization struggles to contain the damage, cleanup the ransomware, and restore enterprise-critical operations. Because ransomware requires time to replicate, penetrations are frequently sprung at night, when attacks may take longer to recognize. This multiplies the difficulty of rapidly assembling and coordinating an experienced response team.
Progent provides an assortment of support services for protecting organizations from crypto-ransomware penetrations. Among these are user education to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus installation of next-generation security solutions with AI technology from SentinelOne to detect and disable new cyber threats intelligently. Progent also can provide the services of experienced crypto-ransomware recovery engineers with the skills and commitment to re-deploy a compromised network as soon as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Recovery Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware penetration, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will provide the codes to decrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their information after having paid the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can be in the millions of dollars. The other path is to re-install the key parts of your IT environment. Without the availability of essential system backups, this requires a broad complement of skill sets, top notch team management, and the capability to work continuously until the task is done.
For twenty years, Progent has provided expert Information Technology services for businesses throughout the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have attained advanced certifications in leading technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity consultants have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in accounting and ERP software solutions. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the ability to rapidly identify important systems and integrate the surviving components of your Information Technology system after a ransomware penetration and configure them into a functioning network.
Progent's recovery group deploys powerful project management systems to coordinate the complex restoration process. Progent knows the urgency of acting swiftly and in unison with a client's management and Information Technology team members to prioritize tasks and to get key services back online as fast as possible.
Business Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Response
A client hired Progent after their company was taken over by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been developed by North Korean state cybercriminals, possibly using strategies exposed from America's NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific organizations with little room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative instances of ransomware viruses. Headline targets include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing business based in the Chicago metro area with around 500 staff members. The Ryuk attack had frozen all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the start of the attack and were destroyed. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and praying for good luck, but in the end utilized Progent.
"I cannot speak enough about the help Progent gave us throughout the most stressful time of (our) company's life. We may have had to pay the cybercriminals except for the confidence the Progent team provided us. The fact that you could get our e-mail and essential servers back online quicker than one week was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single consultant I got help from or communicated with at Progent was hell bent on getting us working again and was working all day and night on our behalf."
Progent worked together with the customer to quickly determine and prioritize the essential systems that had to be recovered to make it possible to restart business operations:
- Windows Active Directory
- Microsoft Exchange Server
- Financials/MRP
To start, Progent adhered to ransomware event response best practices by stopping the spread and clearing infected systems. Progent then initiated the process of rebuilding Windows Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise environments built on Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not work without Windows AD, and the client's financials and MRP software utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory for authentication to the databases.
Within two days, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-virus state. Progent then helped perform reinstallations and hard drive recovery on the most important systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server schema and configuration information were usable, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate local OST data files (Outlook Email Offline Data Files) on staff PCs and laptops to recover email data. A not too old off-line backup of the businesses accounting/ERP systems made them able to restore these vital programs back servicing users. Although a lot of work needed to be completed to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, critical services were recovered rapidly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation ran fairly normal throughout and we delivered all customer sales."
Throughout the following few weeks critical milestones in the restoration project were made in tight cooperation between Progent consultants and the client:
- Internal web sites were returned to operation with no loss of data.
- The MailStore Server with over four million archived messages was brought online and accessible to users.
- CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory modules were 100 percent operational.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was installed.
- Nearly all of the user desktops were back into operation.
"A lot of what was accomplished during the initial response is mostly a fog for me, but our team will not forget the commitment all of the team put in to help get our company back. I have utilized Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and every time Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered. This time was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A potential business-ending catastrophe was avoided due to dedicated professionals, a broad spectrum of knowledge, and close collaboration. Although upon completion of forensics the ransomware virus penetration detailed here would have been identified and prevented with up-to-date cyber security technology and recognized best practices, team training, and well designed incident response procedures for information protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact remains that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware incursion, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus blocking, removal, and information systems restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (along with others that were contributing), thanks very much for allowing me to get some sleep after we got over the first week. All of you did an impressive job, and if any of your team is around the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
