Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Disaster
Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsRansomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that poses an extinction-level threat for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an attack. Different iterations of ransomware such as CryptoLocker, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for many years and still cause damage. Recent versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Nephilim, along with more as yet unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of online data but also infiltrate many configured system restores and backups. Information synchronized to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be corrupted. In a vulnerable system, it can make automatic restore operations useless and basically knocks the network back to zero.

Restoring services and data after a ransomware event becomes a sprint against the clock as the targeted organization fights to contain the damage, eradicate the virus, and restore business-critical activity. Because ransomware requires time to spread, assaults are usually sprung during nights and weekends, when successful penetrations in many cases take more time to detect. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly assembling and orchestrating a capable response team.

Progent offers an assortment of support services for protecting enterprises from ransomware attacks. These include team member training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to deployment of the latest generation security solutions with artificial intelligence capabilities from SentinelOne to identify and quarantine new cyber attacks rapidly. Progent also provides the services of veteran ransomware recovery professionals with the talent and commitment to reconstruct a breached network as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Support Services
Subsequent to a ransomware event, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that cyber criminals will provide the needed keys to decrypt all your information. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never recovered their data after having paid the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions. The alternative is to piece back together the critical components of your IT environment. Absent the availability of essential information backups, this requires a broad complement of IT skills, top notch team management, and the capability to work continuously until the job is over.

For decades, Progent has provided professional IT services for companies throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes consultants who have earned high-level industry certifications in leading technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity experts have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of experience gives Progent the capability to rapidly understand important systems and re-organize the surviving parts of your Information Technology environment following a ransomware penetration and configure them into a functioning system.

Progent's ransomware team deploys top notch project management systems to coordinate the complicated restoration process. Progent understands the urgency of acting swiftly and in concert with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to get key services back online as fast as humanly possible.

Business Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Virus Response
A customer sought out Progent after their network system was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been deployed by North Korean state cybercriminals, possibly adopting techniques leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk goes after specific businesses with little or no room for disruption and is among the most profitable versions of ransomware viruses. High publicized organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturer based in Chicago and has about 500 workers. The Ryuk attack had frozen all business operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's system backups had been online at the start of the attack and were destroyed. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but in the end called Progent.

"I cannot thank you enough in regards to the care Progent gave us during the most fearful period of (our) company's life. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals behind the attack if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group provided us. The fact that you were able to get our e-mail and important servers back into operation faster than five days was earth shattering. Each consultant I got help from or communicated with at Progent was hell bent on getting our system up and was working 24/7 to bail us out."

Progent worked hand in hand the customer to rapidly determine and assign priority to the critical services that needed to be restored in order to restart company functions:

  • Active Directory
  • Email
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To start, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes event mitigation industry best practices by halting lateral movement and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then began the work of rebuilding Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not function without Windows AD, and the customer's financials and MRP system utilized SQL Server, which depends on Windows AD for access to the database.

Within 2 days, Progent was able to recover Active Directory to its pre-penetration state. Progent then accomplished rebuilding and hard drive recovery on mission critical applications. All Exchange Server schema and attributes were usable, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect intact OST data files (Outlook Email Off-Line Folder Files) on team workstations to recover mail data. A recent offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP systems made it possible to recover these required programs back on-line. Although a large amount of work was left to recover totally from the Ryuk attack, essential systems were recovered quickly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation was never shut down and we did not miss any customer sales."

Over the next couple of weeks important milestones in the recovery process were accomplished through close cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • Self-hosted web sites were returned to operation with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding four million historical messages was brought online and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory functions were completely recovered.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was installed and configured.
  • 90% of the desktops and laptops were functioning as before the incident.

"So much of what went on that first week is mostly a haze for me, but my team will not forget the care each of the team accomplished to give us our business back. I have entrusted Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This situation was a testament to your capabilities."

Conclusion
A likely business extinction disaster was averted through the efforts of dedicated experts, a broad range of IT skills, and close collaboration. Although upon completion of forensics the ransomware incident described here could have been stopped with advanced cyber security systems and best practices, user education, and well thought out incident response procedures for backup and applying software patches, the fact remains that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware attack, remember that Progent's team of experts has extensive experience in ransomware virus defense, removal, and information systems restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were contributing), I'm grateful for making it so I could get rested after we got over the initial fire. Everyone did an amazing job, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
