Ransomware : Your Feared IT Nightmare
Crypto-Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsRansomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that represents an enterprise-level threat for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an assault. Different versions of ransomware like the Dharma, WannaCry, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for years and still cause havoc. Newer variants of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Egregor, plus frequent unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of online information but also infiltrate all configured system backups. Data synched to cloud environments can also be ransomed. In a poorly designed environment, this can render automated restore operations hopeless and basically sets the network back to square one.

Retrieving applications and information following a ransomware intrusion becomes a race against time as the targeted business fights to stop lateral movement, cleanup the ransomware, and restore mission-critical activity. Because crypto-ransomware requires time to replicate, penetrations are frequently sprung on weekends, when attacks in many cases take longer to notice. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and coordinating a qualified mitigation team.

Progent provides a range of help services for securing organizations from crypto-ransomware events. These include user training to become familiar with and avoid phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, plus deployment of next-generation security appliances with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to discover and suppress new cyber threats rapidly. Progent also offers the assistance of veteran ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and commitment to reconstruct a compromised system as urgently as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
Soon after a crypto-ransomware event, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that cyber hackers will respond with the needed keys to unencrypt all your data. Kaspersky ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their data after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions. The other path is to setup from scratch the mission-critical parts of your IT environment. Without access to complete system backups, this calls for a broad range of IT skills, professional team management, and the ability to work non-stop until the task is over.

For decades, Progent has provided professional IT services for companies throughout the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes professionals who have attained advanced certifications in important technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's security specialists have garnered internationally-renowned certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in financial management and ERP software solutions. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the ability to knowledgably determine important systems and re-organize the remaining pieces of your network system following a ransomware attack and assemble them into a functioning system.

Progent's security team of experts has top notch project management systems to orchestrate the complicated restoration process. Progent knows the urgency of working rapidly and together with a client's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to get key applications back online as soon as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Attack Response
A business engaged Progent after their company was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been deployed by Northern Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, possibly using techniques exposed from America's NSA organization. Ryuk targets specific organizations with little or no room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative instances of ransomware. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing business headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 employees. The Ryuk intrusion had frozen all company operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's data backups had been directly accessible at the beginning of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client considered paying the ransom demand (exceeding $200,000) and hoping for good luck, but in the end made the decision to use Progent.

"I cannot tell you enough about the help Progent provided us throughout the most fearful period of (our) company's existence. We had little choice but to pay the Hackers if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent team gave us. The fact that you could get our e-mail system and key servers back online sooner than one week was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single expert I interacted with or messaged at Progent was totally committed on getting our system up and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the client to rapidly determine and prioritize the essential elements that needed to be recovered in order to restart departmental operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Email
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To begin, Progent adhered to Anti-virus event mitigation best practices by stopping lateral movement and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then initiated the process of restoring Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not work without Active Directory, and the businesses' MRP system utilized SQL Server, which needs Active Directory for access to the databases.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to restore Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then assisted with rebuilding and hard drive recovery on critical servers. All Exchange data and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to collect intact OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on various desktop computers to recover mail data. A not too old offline backup of the businesses financials/MRP systems made it possible to return these vital applications back online. Although major work was left to recover totally from the Ryuk attack, critical services were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation never missed a beat and we did not miss any customer shipments."

Throughout the next few weeks key milestones in the restoration project were made through close collaboration between Progent engineers and the client:

  • In-house web applications were brought back up with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding four million historical messages was spun up and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables/Inventory modules were 100 percent operational.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought online.
  • 90% of the user workstations were being used by staff.

"A lot of what happened in the initial days is mostly a fog for me, but we will not forget the countless hours all of you put in to give us our company back. I have utilized Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This situation was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A probable business extinction catastrophe was averted through the efforts of top-tier experts, a broad spectrum of subject matter expertise, and close teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the crypto-ransomware attack detailed here could have been identified and prevented with advanced security technology solutions and security best practices, team training, and well thought out security procedures for information backup and proper patching controls, the fact remains that government-sponsored cybercriminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's team of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and information systems recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (and any others that were helping), I'm grateful for letting me get some sleep after we got over the most critical parts. Everyone did an incredible job, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
