Ransomware : Your Worst Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that represents an extinction-level danger for organizations poorly prepared for an assault. Versions of ransomware such as Dharma, CryptoWall, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for years and still cause harm. More recent versions of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Nephilim, as well as more as yet unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt on-line critical data but also infiltrate most configured system protection. Files synched to cloud environments can also be held hostage. In a poorly architected data protection solution, this can render any restore operations hopeless and basically sets the datacenter back to square one.

Getting back on-line applications and information after a ransomware attack becomes a race against time as the targeted organization struggles to contain, eradicate the ransomware, and resume mission-critical activity. Because ransomware requires time to replicate, assaults are frequently launched on weekends and holidays, when attacks are likely to take more time to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and coordinating a capable mitigation team.

Progent offers a range of services for securing organizations from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are staff training to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of next-generation security appliances with AI capabilities from SentinelOne to detect and extinguish zero-day threats automatically. Progent in addition offers the services of experienced crypto-ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and commitment to rebuild a compromised environment as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
Soon after a ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will return the keys to decipher all your data. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their files after having paid the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The fallback is to setup from scratch the vital elements of your Information Technology environment. Without access to essential information backups, this requires a wide range of skills, well-coordinated project management, and the capability to work continuously until the task is complete.

For two decades, Progent has made available professional Information Technology services for businesses across the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded top industry certifications in important technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity experts have garnered internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISM, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with accounting and ERP application software. This breadth of experience provides Progent the capability to quickly understand critical systems and integrate the surviving components of your IT environment after a ransomware penetration and configure them into an operational network.

Progent's security group has best of breed project management tools to orchestrate the complex recovery process. Progent understands the importance of working swiftly and in unison with a customer's management and Information Technology staff to prioritize tasks and to put the most important applications back on-line as soon as humanly possible.

Business Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Attack Restoration
A client contacted Progent after their company was penetrated by Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been deployed by Northern Korean state sponsored criminal gangs, possibly using algorithms exposed from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific businesses with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable examples of ransomware malware. Well Known targets include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing company located in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 workers. The Ryuk event had brought down all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's information backups had been directly accessible at the time of the intrusion and were eventually encrypted. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom (more than $200,000) and wishfully thinking for the best, but ultimately reached out to Progent.

"I cannot tell you enough in regards to the help Progent provided us during the most fearful period of (our) company's existence. We had little choice but to pay the Hackers if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group gave us. The fact that you could get our messaging and key servers back into operation sooner than seven days was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single consultant I got help from or e-mailed at Progent was hell bent on getting us working again and was working all day and night to bail us out."

Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly assess and assign priority to the mission critical systems that needed to be recovered to make it possible to resume business functions:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Electronic Mail
  • Accounting/MRP
To get going, Progent adhered to ransomware incident response industry best practices by halting lateral movement and clearing infected systems. Progent then initiated the steps of recovering Windows Active Directory, the heart of enterprise environments built on Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange messaging will not work without Active Directory, and the customer's MRP system utilized SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory services for access to the databases.

Within 48 hours, Progent was able to recover Windows Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then assisted with setup and hard drive recovery on essential servers. All Microsoft Exchange Server data and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate non-encrypted OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on staff PCs to recover email information. A recent offline backup of the customer's accounting/ERP systems made them able to return these required applications back servicing users. Although major work remained to recover totally from the Ryuk damage, the most important systems were recovered quickly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation never missed a beat and we produced all customer sales."

During the next couple of weeks critical milestones in the restoration project were completed through tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the customer:

  • In-house web applications were returned to operation with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server containing more than four million archived messages was restored to operations and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory capabilities were 100 percent operational.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was brought online.
  • Ninety percent of the user desktops were back into operation.

"Much of what went on that first week is mostly a fog for me, but my team will not forget the care all of your team accomplished to give us our business back. I've utilized Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This situation was a Herculean accomplishment."

Conclusion
A likely enterprise-killing disaster was dodged through the efforts of dedicated experts, a broad range of IT skills, and close collaboration. Although in post mortem the ransomware virus penetration detailed here should have been identified and disabled with modern cyber security systems and security best practices, user education, and well thought out incident response procedures for data backup and proper patching controls, the fact is that state-sponsored hackers from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has proven experience in ransomware virus defense, removal, and file recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Tony (along with others who were involved), I'm grateful for making it so I could get rested after we made it past the initial fire. All of you did an amazing job, and if anyone that helped is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
