Ransomware : Your Worst Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that represents an existential danger for businesses unprepared for an attack. Multiple generations of ransomware like the Dharma, CryptoWall, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for many years and continue to cause destruction. The latest strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, along with daily unnamed malware, not only encrypt online data files but also infiltrate any available system protection. Information replicated to the cloud can also be encrypted. In a poorly designed environment, it can make automated restoration useless and basically knocks the entire system back to zero.
Getting back online services and data following a crypto-ransomware attack becomes a sprint against time as the targeted business tries its best to contain, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and resume business-critical operations. Because ransomware needs time to move laterally, assaults are often sprung during weekends and nights, when attacks are likely to take more time to discover. This compounds the difficulty of quickly marshalling and coordinating a qualified response team.
Progent makes available a variety of services for protecting enterprises from ransomware events. These include user training to become familiar with and avoid phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of modern security appliances with artificial intelligence capabilities from SentinelOne to identify and quarantine day-zero cyber threats rapidly. Progent also provides the assistance of expert crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and perseverance to restore a breached system as quickly as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
After a crypto-ransomware attack, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will provide the needed keys to unencrypt any of your information. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that seventeen percent of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can be in the millions. The other path is to piece back together the key parts of your IT environment. Without the availability of complete system backups, this calls for a wide complement of skill sets, top notch team management, and the capability to work continuously until the job is completed.
For two decades, Progent has provided professional Information Technology services for companies across the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have attained advanced industry certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have earned internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in financial systems and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience provides Progent the capability to quickly determine critical systems and organize the remaining pieces of your network system after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into an operational network.
Progent's security group has powerful project management applications to coordinate the complicated restoration process. Progent knows the urgency of working quickly and together with a customer's management and Information Technology staff to assign priority to tasks and to put key applications back on line as fast as possible.
Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Response
A customer contacted Progent after their organization was taken over by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been launched by North Korean state sponsored cybercriminals, possibly adopting strategies leaked from the United States National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific businesses with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is among the most profitable iterations of ransomware. High publicized targets include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing company headquartered in Chicago with about 500 workers. The Ryuk event had disabled all essential operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's information backups had been on-line at the start of the intrusion and were eventually encrypted. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (more than $200K) and wishfully thinking for the best, but ultimately called Progent.
"I cannot tell you enough in regards to the expertise Progent provided us during the most critical time of (our) businesses existence. We would have paid the cyber criminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group gave us. That you could get our messaging and production servers back on-line in less than one week was beyond my wildest dreams. Each person I worked with or communicated with at Progent was laser focused on getting us back online and was working all day and night on our behalf."
Progent worked with the client to quickly determine and prioritize the key systems that had to be recovered to make it possible to restart departmental operations:
- Windows Active Directory
- Electronic Messaging
- Accounting/MRP
To get going, Progent adhered to ransomware event mitigation industry best practices by stopping the spread and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then began the steps of rebuilding Active Directory, the core of enterprise systems built on Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not function without Active Directory, and the customer's MRP system used Microsoft SQL, which depends on Active Directory for access to the database.
In less than 2 days, Progent was able to rebuild Windows Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then assisted with setup and storage recovery of essential applications. All Exchange Server data and attributes were usable, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to find non-encrypted OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on user workstations in order to recover mail information. A not too old off-line backup of the customer's accounting/MRP systems made it possible to restore these required applications back online. Although major work needed to be completed to recover totally from the Ryuk virus, essential services were restored rapidly:
"For the most part, the production line operation was never shut down and we made all customer shipments."
Throughout the next month critical milestones in the restoration project were made through tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the client:
- Self-hosted web sites were brought back up with no loss of data.
- The MailStore Exchange Server with over 4 million historical emails was brought on-line and available for users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory capabilities were fully operational.
- A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought on-line.
- 90% of the user desktops and notebooks were fully operational.
"A huge amount of what was accomplished those first few days is nearly entirely a blur for me, but my team will not forget the commitment each of your team accomplished to give us our business back. I have entrusted Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and each time Progent has shined and delivered. This time was the most impressive ever."
Conclusion
A likely company-ending catastrophe was evaded by results-oriented experts, a broad range of knowledge, and close collaboration. Although in post mortem the crypto-ransomware attack detailed here should have been identified and blocked with modern security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, user education, and properly executed security procedures for information backup and proper patching controls, the fact is that government-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware attack, remember that Progent's team of professionals has substantial experience in ransomware virus blocking, removal, and data restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (along with others who were involved), I'm grateful for letting me get some sleep after we made it past the first week. Everyone did an impressive effort, and if any of your team is in the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
