ProSight Ransomware Vulnerability AssessmentRansomware has become the weapon of choice for the major cyber-crime organizations and malicious governments, representing a potentially lethal threat to businesses that are breached. Modern versions of crypto-ransomware go after everything, including online backup, making even selective restoration a complex and costly exercise. Novel versions of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Mailto (aka Netwalker), Phobos, Snatch and Nephilim have emerged, replacing Locky, TeslaCrypt, and CryptoWall in prominence, sophistication, and destructive impact.

Most ransomware breaches are the result of innocent-looking emails with dangerous links or attachments, and many are so-called "zero-day" variants that can escape the defenses of legacy signature-based antivirus filters. While user education and frontline detection are critical to defend your network against ransomware, leading practices demand that you expect that some malware will eventually succeed and that you put in place a solid backup solution that enables you to restore files and services rapidly with minimal losses.

Progent's ProSight Ransomware Vulnerability Assessment is a low-cost service built around a remote interview with a Progent cybersecurity consultant experienced in ransomware defense and repair. During this assessment Progent will work directly with your Cambridge network managers to gather pertinent information about your cybersecurity setup and backup processes. Progent will utilize this data to generate a Basic Security and Best Practices Report detailing how to adhere to best practices for implementing and managing your cybersecurity and backup systems to prevent or recover from a ransomware assault.

Progent's Basic Security and Best Practices Assessment highlights key areas related to ransomware prevention and restoration recovery. The report addresses:

Cybersecurity

  • Correct use of administration accounts
  • Correct NTFS and SMB (Server Message Block) permissions
  • Proper firewall configuration
  • Safe RDP connections
  • Advice about AntiVirus (AV) filtering selection and configuration
Backups
  • Split permission model for backup integrity
  • Backing up key servers such as AD
  • Geographically dispersed backups with cloud backup to Azure
The remote interview for the ProSight Ransomware Vulnerability Checkup service takes about one hour for the average small business and longer for bigger or more complex environments. The report document includes recommendations for enhancing your ability to ward off or recover from a ransomware incident and Progent offers on-demand consulting services to assist your business to design and deploy an efficient cybersecurity/backup solution tailored to your business needs.

About Ransomware
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts or steals files so they cannot be used or are made publicly available. Crypto-ransomware sometimes locks the victim's computer. To prevent the carnage, the victim is asked to send a specified amount of money (the ransom), usually via a crypto currency like Bitcoin, within a brief time window. It is not guaranteed that delivering the extortion price will restore the damaged data or avoid its publication. Files can be encrypted or erased throughout a network based on the target's write permissions, and you cannot solve the strong encryption algorithms used on the compromised files. A typical ransomware delivery package is spoofed email, in which the victim is lured into interacting with by a social engineering exploit known as spear phishing. This causes the email message to appear to come from a familiar source. Another common vulnerability is an improperly protected Remote Desktop Protocol port.

The ransomware variant CryptoLocker opened the new age of crypto-ransomware in 2013, and the damage attributed to by the many strains of ransomware is estimated at billions of dollars annually, roughly doubling every two years. Notorious attacks include Locky, and NotPetya. Current high-profile threats like Ryuk, Maze and CryptoWall are more complex and have wreaked more havoc than earlier strains. Even if your backup/recovery processes enable your business to restore your encrypted files, you can still be threatened by exfiltration, where stolen documents are made public. Because additional variants of ransomware are launched every day, there is no guarantee that traditional signature-based anti-virus tools will detect the latest attack. If threat does show up in an email, it is important that your end users have learned to be aware of phishing techniques. Your last line of defense is a solid scheme for performing and retaining offsite backups and the deployment of reliable recovery tools.
