ProSight Ransomware Preparedness ReportRansomware has become the weapon of choice for the major cyber-crime organizations and malicious states, posing a potentially existential threat to companies that are breached. Current versions of ransomware go after everything, including online backup, making even partial restoration a complex and expensive process. New versions of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Mailto (aka Netwalker), Phobos, Snatch and Nephilim have emerged, replacing WannaCry, Cerber, and NotPetya in prominence, sophistication, and destructive impact.

Most crypto-ransomware breaches are caused by innocent-seeming emails that include malicious links or attachments, and a high percentage are "zero-day" attacks that elude detection by traditional signature-based antivirus (AV) tools. While user training and up-front detection are important to protect against ransomware, best practices dictate that you assume some attacks will inevitably succeed and that you implement a strong backup mechanism that enables you to repair the damage quickly with minimal damage.

Progent's ProSight Ransomware Preparedness Report is a low-cost service centered around a remote discussion with a Progent cybersecurity consultant skilled in ransomware defense and recovery. In the course of this assessment Progent will collaborate directly with your Minnetonka IT management staff to collect pertinent data about your security configuration and backup processes. Progent will utilize this information to produce a Basic Security and Best Practices Assessment documenting how to adhere to best practices for implementing and administering your cybersecurity and backup solution to block or clean up after a crypto-ransomware assault.

Progent's Basic Security and Best Practices Report highlights key areas associated with ransomware prevention and restoration recovery. The report covers:

Cybersecurity

  • Proper use of admin accounts
  • Appropriate NTFS and SMB (Server Message Block) permissions
  • Proper firewall configuration
  • Secure RDP connections
  • Guidance for AntiVirus (AV) tools selection and deployment
Backups
  • Split permission model for backup integrity
  • Protecting critical servers including AD
  • Offsite backups with cloud backup to Microsoft Azure
The online interview included with the ProSight Ransomware Vulnerability Report service takes about an hour for the average small business network and longer for larger or more complex IT environments. The written report includes suggestions for improving your ability to ward off or recover from a ransomware attack and Progent can provide as-needed consulting services to help you and your IT staff to design and deploy a cost-effective security/backup solution customized for your business requirements.

About Ransomware
Ransomware is a form of malicious software that encrypts or steals files so they are unusable or are made publicly available. Crypto-ransomware sometimes locks the victim's computer. To avoid the damage, the victim is required to send a certain amount of money (the ransom), usually in the form of a crypto currency such as Bitcoin, within a short time window. It is never certain that delivering the ransom will recover the lost data or avoid its exposure to the public. Files can be encrypted or deleted across a network depending on the target's write permissions, and you cannot solve the strong encryption technologies used on the hostage files. A typical ransomware delivery package is tainted email, in which the target is lured into responding to by means of a social engineering technique known as spear phishing. This causes the email to appear to come from a trusted sender. Another common attack vector is a poorly secured Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) port.

The ransomware variant CryptoLocker ushered in the new age of crypto-ransomware in 2013, and the monetary losses attributed to by different strains of ransomware is estimated at billions of dollars per year, more than doubling every two years. Notorious examples are WannaCry, and Petya. Current high-profile threats like Ryuk, DoppelPaymer and CryptoWall are more elaborate and have wreaked more damage than earlier versions. Even if your backup processes allow your business to recover your ransomed data, you can still be hurt by so-called exfiltration, where ransomed data are made public. Because additional variants of ransomware crop up daily, there is no guarantee that traditional signature-matching anti-virus tools will detect the latest malware. If an attack does appear in an email, it is critical that your users have been taught to identify social engineering techniques. Your last line of defense is a sound process for performing and keeping offsite backups plus the deployment of dependable restoration tools.
