Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Disaster
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that presents an extinction-level danger for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an assault. Versions of ransomware like the CrySIS, CryptoWall, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and continue to cause destruction. Modern variants of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Nephilim, plus frequent as yet unnamed malware, not only do encryption of online data but also infect most configured system backup. Files replicated to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed environment, this can render any restore operations hopeless and effectively knocks the entire system back to square one.

Recovering applications and information following a crypto-ransomware event becomes a race against time as the targeted business tries its best to contain, cleanup the ransomware, and restore enterprise-critical operations. Because crypto-ransomware needs time to spread, assaults are often launched during weekends and nights, when penetrations typically take more time to discover. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and organizing a capable mitigation team.

Progent has a range of help services for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware events. Among these are team training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of the latest generation security appliances with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish day-zero cyber attacks intelligently. Progent in addition can provide the services of veteran crypto-ransomware recovery engineers with the skills and perseverance to reconstruct a compromised network as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Support Services
Soon after a crypto-ransomware event, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that cyber criminals will respond with the keys to decipher any or all of your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never recovered their files after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions. The alternative is to setup from scratch the critical components of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to essential system backups, this calls for a wide range of skills, top notch project management, and the ability to work 24x7 until the task is over.

For two decades, Progent has provided certified expert Information Technology services for businesses across the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes professionals who have attained top industry certifications in foundation technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have earned internationally-renowned certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise in financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the ability to efficiently identify important systems and consolidate the remaining pieces of your network environment after a crypto-ransomware event and assemble them into a functioning network.

Progent's recovery team of experts has best of breed project management systems to orchestrate the complicated restoration process. Progent understands the urgency of working quickly and in unison with a customer's management and Information Technology resources to prioritize tasks and to put the most important applications back on line as fast as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Attack Restoration
A customer engaged Progent after their network system was brought down by Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been created by North Korean state sponsored cybercriminals, possibly using techniques leaked from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific businesses with limited room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative examples of ransomware malware. Headline organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a small manufacturing company based in the Chicago metro area with about 500 employees. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the start of the attack and were eventually encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and wishfully thinking for the best, but in the end engaged Progent.

"I cannot say enough in regards to the expertise Progent provided us during the most stressful period of (our) company's existence. We had little choice but to pay the hackers behind this attack if not for the confidence the Progent group gave us. That you could get our e-mail system and production servers back quicker than one week was earth shattering. Every single person I got help from or e-mailed at Progent was amazingly focused on getting us working again and was working day and night on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly determine and prioritize the critical systems that had to be addressed in order to restart company functions:

  • Windows Active Directory
  • E-Mail
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To start, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes incident response industry best practices by halting the spread and removing active viruses. Progent then started the steps of bringing back online Windows Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise systems built on Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not operate without AD, and the customer's accounting and MRP software used Microsoft SQL, which requires Active Directory services for authentication to the database.

Within 48 hours, Progent was able to recover Windows Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then performed setup and storage recovery on critical servers. All Exchange schema and attributes were usable, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to assemble intact OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Folder Files) on team desktop computers and laptops to recover email information. A recent offline backup of the client's financials/ERP systems made it possible to recover these essential programs back online for users. Although a large amount of work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk attack, essential services were restored rapidly:

"For the most part, the manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we did not miss any customer orders."

During the following few weeks critical milestones in the restoration process were accomplished in tight cooperation between Progent consultants and the client:

  • Self-hosted web applications were brought back up without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than four million historical emails was brought on-line and available for users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory Control modules were 100% restored.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was installed.
  • 90% of the user workstations were functioning as before the incident.

"Much of what occurred in the initial days is nearly entirely a haze for me, but I will not soon forget the commitment each and every one of the team accomplished to help get our business back. I have entrusted Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and each time Progent has come through and delivered. This time was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A probable company-ending disaster was averted with results-oriented experts, a broad range of IT skills, and close collaboration. Although in post mortem the ransomware incident described here could have been identified and blocked with advanced security systems and recognized best practices, team training, and well designed security procedures for data backup and applying software patches, the fact is that state-sponsored cybercriminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's team of experts has a proven track record in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and file disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others that were involved), thank you for allowing me to get some sleep after we got through the initial fire. Everyone did an amazing effort, and if anyone that helped is around the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
