Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsRansomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that presents an existential danger for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an attack. Versions of crypto-ransomware such as CrySIS, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for a long time and continue to inflict havoc. The latest versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Egregor, as well as daily unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt on-line data but also infect many accessible system protection mechanisms. Data replicated to the cloud can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed system, this can render automatic recovery useless and effectively knocks the datacenter back to zero.

Recovering services and data after a crypto-ransomware intrusion becomes a race against the clock as the victim struggles to contain, cleanup the crypto-ransomware, and resume business-critical operations. Because ransomware needs time to move laterally, assaults are often sprung during nights and weekends, when penetrations are likely to take longer to detect. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly marshalling and organizing a capable response team.

Progent has a variety of help services for securing enterprises from ransomware penetrations. Among these are team member education to become familiar with and avoid phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of modern security solutions with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to detect and disable zero-day cyber attacks quickly. Progent also provides the services of seasoned crypto-ransomware recovery consultants with the skills and perseverance to rebuild a breached network as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
Soon after a ransomware attack, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that distant criminals will respond with the keys to decipher all your data. Kaspersky determined that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions. The alternative is to piece back together the key elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to complete information backups, this requires a wide range of skills, well-coordinated project management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the job is done.

For decades, Progent has offered expert IT services for companies throughout the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes professionals who have attained top certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security consultants have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience with financial management and ERP application software. This breadth of experience gives Progent the skills to knowledgably determine necessary systems and re-organize the surviving pieces of your IT environment following a crypto-ransomware attack and configure them into a functioning system.

Progent's security group uses state-of-the-art project management systems to orchestrate the complex recovery process. Progent appreciates the urgency of acting swiftly and in unison with a client's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to put key systems back on-line as soon as humanly possible.

Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Response
A customer contacted Progent after their network was attacked by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been developed by Northern Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of adopting strategies exposed from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk seeks specific organizations with little tolerance for operational disruption and is among the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware malware. High publicized organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing company located in the Chicago metro area with about 500 staff members. The Ryuk intrusion had disabled all business operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's backups had been directly accessible at the time of the attack and were damaged. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and praying for good luck, but ultimately utilized Progent.

"I cannot speak enough about the expertise Progent provided us during the most critical time of (our) businesses survival. We would have paid the cyber criminals except for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. The fact that you were able to get our e-mail and critical applications back on-line in less than five days was something I thought impossible. Each expert I talked with or communicated with at Progent was laser focused on getting our company operational and was working non-stop on our behalf."

Progent worked hand in hand the customer to quickly determine and prioritize the essential elements that had to be restored in order to resume departmental functions:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Microsoft Exchange Email
  • Financials/MRP
To start, Progent adhered to Anti-virus incident response best practices by stopping the spread and removing active viruses. Progent then initiated the steps of rebuilding Microsoft AD, the key technology of enterprise environments built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not operate without AD, and the customer's financials and MRP software leveraged Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Active Directory services for access to the data.

In less than 2 days, Progent was able to rebuild Windows Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then charged ahead with setup and storage recovery on mission critical applications. All Microsoft Exchange Server ties and attributes were intact, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to find local OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on team workstations to recover mail data. A recent off-line backup of the businesses manufacturing software made it possible to return these vital applications back on-line. Although major work still had to be done to recover totally from the Ryuk damage, essential services were restored quickly:

"For the most part, the production operation never missed a beat and we produced all customer deliverables."

Throughout the following month important milestones in the recovery project were achieved through tight collaboration between Progent team members and the customer:

  • In-house web applications were restored without losing any data.
  • The MailStore Server with over four million historical messages was spun up and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory modules were completely recovered.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was brought online.
  • Most of the desktop computers were functioning as before the incident.

"So much of what occurred in the initial days is mostly a blur for me, but we will not forget the commitment each and every one of the team put in to help get our business back. I have been working with Progent for the past 10 years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has shined and delivered. This situation was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A possible company-ending catastrophe was averted due to top-tier professionals, a broad range of IT skills, and close teamwork. Although upon completion of forensics the ransomware virus attack detailed here could have been shut down with advanced cyber security technology and best practices, user training, and well thought out security procedures for information protection and proper patching controls, the fact remains that state-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's roster of experts has proven experience in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, remediation, and data restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (and any others that were involved), thanks very much for allowing me to get rested after we made it through the first week. Everyone did an fabulous effort, and if anyone is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
