Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Catastrophe
Crypto-Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsCrypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that represents an existential danger for organizations vulnerable to an attack. Different versions of crypto-ransomware like the CrySIS, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for a long time and continue to inflict harm. Recent versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, as well as daily unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of online data files but also infiltrate many accessible system restores and backups. Data synched to cloud environments can also be encrypted. In a poorly designed data protection solution, this can make any recovery impossible and effectively knocks the entire system back to zero.

Getting back online services and data after a ransomware attack becomes a sprint against time as the targeted business struggles to contain the damage, remove the ransomware, and resume mission-critical operations. Due to the fact that crypto-ransomware requires time to move laterally, attacks are frequently sprung on weekends and holidays, when successful penetrations in many cases take more time to uncover. This compounds the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and coordinating an experienced mitigation team.

Progent has a variety of services for securing businesses from ransomware penetrations. These include staff training to help recognize and avoid phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of the latest generation security solutions with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to detect and extinguish zero-day cyber attacks automatically. Progent also offers the assistance of expert ransomware recovery consultants with the track record and commitment to reconstruct a breached system as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that merciless criminals will provide the keys to decipher any of your information. Kaspersky ascertained that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never recovered their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The fallback is to setup from scratch the essential parts of your IT environment. Without access to full information backups, this calls for a wide complement of IT skills, top notch team management, and the ability to work continuously until the recovery project is finished.

For twenty years, Progent has offered professional IT services for businesses throughout the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes consultants who have attained advanced certifications in key technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity experts have earned internationally-renowned certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience with financial management and ERP applications. This breadth of experience provides Progent the ability to quickly determine important systems and organize the remaining pieces of your computer network environment after a crypto-ransomware penetration and assemble them into an operational network.

Progent's security team utilizes top notch project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working quickly and together with a customer's management and IT staff to prioritize tasks and to put key systems back on line as fast as possible.

Customer Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Incident Response
A client hired Progent after their company was brought down by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been launched by Northern Korean state sponsored cybercriminals, possibly using strategies exposed from the United States National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific organizations with little tolerance for disruption and is one of the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware. High publicized victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing company located in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 employees. The Ryuk penetration had shut down all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the start of the intrusion and were eventually encrypted. The client was pursuing financing for paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200,000) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but in the end utilized Progent.

"I can't say enough in regards to the care Progent gave us throughout the most stressful time of (our) company's survival. We would have paid the Hackers if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. The fact that you could get our e-mail and critical applications back faster than 1 week was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single expert I worked with or e-mailed at Progent was urgently focused on getting our company operational and was working breakneck pace on our behalf."

Progent worked hand in hand the customer to rapidly assess and assign priority to the essential systems that needed to be addressed in order to restart departmental functions:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Electronic Mail
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To begin, Progent followed Anti-virus penetration response best practices by isolating and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then started the steps of recovering Active Directory, the heart of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not function without AD, and the client's financials and MRP software leveraged SQL Server, which needs Active Directory for access to the data.

In less than 2 days, Progent was able to restore Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then helped perform rebuilding and storage recovery of essential servers. All Microsoft Exchange Server data and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to assemble intact OST files (Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on various workstations and laptops to recover mail messages. A recent off-line backup of the customer's accounting/MRP software made it possible to restore these essential applications back online for users. Although significant work still had to be done to recover totally from the Ryuk damage, essential systems were recovered quickly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation never missed a beat and we produced all customer shipments."

Over the next couple of weeks critical milestones in the restoration process were made in tight cooperation between Progent team members and the client:

  • Self-hosted web sites were brought back up without losing any data.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server exceeding 4 million archived emails was brought on-line and available for users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory Control functions were 100% restored.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was installed and configured.
  • Nearly all of the user desktops and notebooks were functioning as before the incident.

"A lot of what went on during the initial response is mostly a haze for me, but our team will not forget the dedication each of your team accomplished to give us our company back. I have utilized Progent for the past 10 years, maybe more, and each time Progent has impressed me and delivered. This time was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A possible business extinction disaster was evaded by top-tier experts, a broad array of technical expertise, and close teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the crypto-ransomware incident described here could have been blocked with up-to-date cyber security systems and recognized best practices, user education, and well thought out security procedures for information protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact remains that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incident, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus defense, remediation, and information systems restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others that were helping), thank you for letting me get some sleep after we made it past the first week. All of you did an incredible job, and if anyone is around the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
