Ransomware : Your Feared IT Disaster
Ransomware Recovery ExpertsCrypto-Ransomware has become a modern cyberplague that represents an existential danger for businesses unprepared for an attack. Different iterations of ransomware such as CrySIS, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for a long time and continue to inflict damage. Recent strains of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Nephilim, along with more as yet unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt online data but also infiltrate any available system protection mechanisms. Information synchronized to cloud environments can also be held hostage. In a poorly designed system, it can make automated restoration hopeless and effectively sets the network back to zero.

Getting back services and information after a crypto-ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted organization struggles to contain, cleanup the ransomware, and resume business-critical operations. Due to the fact that ransomware takes time to move laterally, penetrations are usually sprung on weekends, when successful attacks are likely to take more time to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly assembling and coordinating a capable response team.

Progent makes available a variety of support services for protecting organizations from ransomware attacks. These include team member training to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of the latest generation security gateways with AI technology from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish new cyber attacks automatically. Progent in addition offers the services of veteran ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and commitment to restore a compromised environment as quickly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
Following a ransomware penetration, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that distant criminals will provide the codes to decipher all your information. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The alternative is to piece back together the key elements of your IT environment. Absent access to full system backups, this requires a broad range of IT skills, top notch team management, and the willingness to work continuously until the task is over.

For two decades, Progent has provided certified expert IT services for businesses throughout the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have earned top industry certifications in key technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have earned internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience with financial management and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience affords Progent the capability to rapidly determine critical systems and consolidate the surviving parts of your network system after a crypto-ransomware event and assemble them into an operational network.

Progent's recovery team has powerful project management tools to orchestrate the complex restoration process. Progent understands the urgency of acting rapidly and in unison with a customer's management and Information Technology staff to assign priority to tasks and to put critical applications back on-line as fast as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Incident Response
A customer hired Progent after their network system was penetrated by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is believed to have been launched by Northern Korean state sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of using approaches leaked from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific organizations with little or no room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative iterations of ransomware malware. Well Known victims include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturer headquartered in Chicago with about 500 employees. The Ryuk penetration had shut down all company operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's information backups had been directly accessible at the beginning of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom (more than $200,000) and hoping for the best, but in the end brought in Progent.

"I can't say enough about the expertise Progent gave us throughout the most stressful period of (our) businesses survival. We may have had to pay the cyber criminals if not for the confidence the Progent group afforded us. That you were able to get our messaging and key applications back on-line in less than one week was earth shattering. Each staff member I worked with or texted at Progent was urgently focused on getting us operational and was working 24 by 7 to bail us out."

Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly identify and prioritize the critical services that needed to be restored in order to continue company operations:

  • Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent followed Anti-virus incident response industry best practices by halting lateral movement and performing virus removal steps. Progent then initiated the task of restoring Windows Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not function without Active Directory, and the customer's financials and MRP system leveraged SQL Server, which needs Windows AD for authentication to the data.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to re-build Windows Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then initiated reinstallations and hard drive recovery of key applications. All Exchange Server data and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to collect intact OST files (Outlook Email Off-Line Data Files) on various workstations and laptops to recover mail information. A not too old offline backup of the customer's accounting systems made them able to recover these essential programs back servicing users. Although major work still had to be done to recover fully from the Ryuk event, critical systems were returned to operations rapidly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation did not miss a beat and we produced all customer orders."

Throughout the next couple of weeks key milestones in the recovery project were completed in close collaboration between Progent team members and the client:

  • Self-hosted web applications were returned to operation with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server containing more than four million archived messages was restored to operations and available for users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/AR/Inventory Control capabilities were fully recovered.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought on-line.
  • Nearly all of the user PCs were operational.

"A huge amount of what transpired in the early hours is mostly a fog for me, but our team will not soon forget the care each of the team accomplished to help get our business back. I've trusted Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered. This situation was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A potential enterprise-killing catastrophe was avoided due to hard-working professionals, a broad spectrum of knowledge, and close teamwork. Although in hindsight the ransomware penetration detailed here could have been shut down with up-to-date cyber security technology solutions and recognized best practices, staff training, and properly executed security procedures for backup and applying software patches, the fact remains that state-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, China and elsewhere are relentless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's roster of experts has substantial experience in ransomware virus defense, remediation, and file disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were helping), thanks very much for making it so I could get rested after we made it past the first week. Everyone did an fabulous effort, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
