Ransomware : Your Worst IT Catastrophe
Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsCrypto-Ransomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that presents an extinction-level danger for organizations poorly prepared for an assault. Multiple generations of crypto-ransomware like the CryptoLocker, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for a long time and still inflict havoc. More recent strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, as well as frequent unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of on-line critical data but also infect any configured system protection. Information replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be held hostage. In a vulnerable environment, it can make automatic restoration useless and effectively knocks the datacenter back to zero.

Recovering services and information following a ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business fights to stop the spread, clear the ransomware, and restore mission-critical activity. Because ransomware takes time to spread, attacks are often launched on weekends and holidays, when penetrations tend to take more time to recognize. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly marshalling and organizing a qualified mitigation team.

Progent provides a range of support services for securing businesses from ransomware attacks. Among these are team training to become familiar with and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of the latest generation security appliances with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish new threats intelligently. Progent also provides the assistance of expert ransomware recovery professionals with the talent and perseverance to rebuild a compromised system as quickly as possible.

Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Recovery Support Services
Following a crypto-ransomware penetration, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will return the needed keys to decrypt any of your data. Kaspersky determined that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never restored their information even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions of dollars. The alternative is to re-install the essential elements of your Information Technology environment. Without access to complete system backups, this calls for a broad range of skills, well-coordinated project management, and the capability to work non-stop until the job is over.

For decades, Progent has made available professional Information Technology services for businesses across the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts includes consultants who have earned high-level certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's security specialists have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience with financial management and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the skills to quickly identify important systems and organize the surviving parts of your IT environment following a ransomware attack and configure them into a functioning system.

Progent's ransomware group has powerful project management applications to orchestrate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent understands the urgency of acting rapidly and in concert with a customer's management and Information Technology staff to prioritize tasks and to get key applications back on line as soon as possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Incident Recovery
A customer escalated to Progent after their company was brought down by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been launched by North Korean state hackers, possibly adopting algorithms leaked from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific organizations with little or no ability to sustain operational disruption and is among the most profitable iterations of ransomware. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing company based in Chicago and has about 500 workers. The Ryuk penetration had disabled all essential operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's system backups had been online at the time of the attack and were eventually encrypted. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom (more than two hundred thousand dollars) and hoping for the best, but in the end made the decision to use Progent.

"I cannot speak enough about the support Progent gave us throughout the most critical period of (our) businesses survival. We most likely would have paid the hackers behind this attack if not for the confidence the Progent experts afforded us. The fact that you could get our e-mail and production applications back into operation in less than one week was beyond my wildest dreams. Each consultant I interacted with or texted at Progent was urgently focused on getting us restored and was working 24 by 7 to bail us out."

Progent worked with the customer to quickly understand and prioritize the most important systems that needed to be restored in order to continue business operations:

  • Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Email
  • MRP System
To start, Progent adhered to ransomware penetration mitigation industry best practices by isolating and removing active viruses. Progent then began the steps of recovering Windows Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise networks built on Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not function without Active Directory, and the client's MRP applications utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Active Directory services for access to the databases.

Within two days, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-virus state. Progent then completed reinstallations and storage recovery on the most important servers. All Exchange Server data and attributes were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to collect intact OST files (Outlook Offline Folder Files) on staff workstations in order to recover email messages. A recent offline backup of the businesses financials/ERP systems made it possible to return these vital programs back online for users. Although a large amount of work needed to be completed to recover fully from the Ryuk attack, the most important systems were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation never missed a beat and we made all customer deliverables."

During the following few weeks critical milestones in the restoration process were completed through close cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • Self-hosted web sites were brought back up without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Server exceeding four million archived emails was spun up and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory Control modules were 100 percent operational.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was brought on-line.
  • Nearly all of the user PCs were functioning as before the incident.

"A lot of what transpired during the initial response is nearly entirely a haze for me, but our team will not soon forget the countless hours all of you put in to help get our business back. I've been working with Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and every time Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered. This time was a life saver."

Conclusion
A possible enterprise-killing disaster was dodged through the efforts of dedicated professionals, a broad range of subject matter expertise, and close teamwork. Although in post mortem the ransomware attack detailed here should have been stopped with modern security technology solutions and security best practices, user training, and appropriate security procedures for information backup and applying software patches, the reality remains that government-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a ransomware incident, feel confident that Progent's team of experts has a proven track record in crypto-ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and data recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were helping), thank you for making it so I could get some sleep after we made it over the most critical parts. All of you did an incredible effort, and if anyone that helped is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
