Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Disaster
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that presents an existential threat for organizations poorly prepared for an attack. Multiple generations of crypto-ransomware such as Dharma, CryptoWall, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for a long time and continue to inflict havoc. Modern versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Egregor, along with more as yet unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of online files but also infect any available system restores and backups. Files replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be encrypted. In a vulnerable environment, it can make automated restoration hopeless and effectively knocks the datacenter back to zero.
Restoring programs and information following a crypto-ransomware outage becomes a race against time as the targeted business tries its best to stop lateral movement, eradicate the ransomware, and resume business-critical activity. Since ransomware requires time to replicate, assaults are often launched at night, when successful penetrations may take more time to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and coordinating a capable response team.
Progent makes available a range of solutions for securing businesses from ransomware penetrations. Among these are user training to help identify and avoid phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of modern security solutions with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to detect and disable day-zero cyber threats automatically. Progent also offers the services of seasoned crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and perseverance to re-deploy a compromised environment as urgently as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Recovery Support Services
Following a crypto-ransomware attack, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will return the needed keys to unencrypt all your information. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can reach millions. The fallback is to setup from scratch the critical components of your IT environment. Absent access to essential data backups, this requires a broad range of skills, well-coordinated project management, and the capability to work non-stop until the task is completed.
For twenty years, Progent has provided professional IT services for businesses across the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes engineers who have been awarded high-level certifications in foundation technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's security specialists have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise with financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the capability to quickly ascertain necessary systems and integrate the surviving parts of your IT system after a ransomware attack and assemble them into a functioning system.
Progent's ransomware group uses powerful project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working quickly and together with a customer's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to get the most important services back on-line as soon as humanly possible.
Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Response
A client sought out Progent after their network was taken over by the Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been developed by North Korean government sponsored hackers, suspected of using strategies leaked from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific companies with little or no tolerance for operational disruption and is among the most profitable versions of crypto-ransomware. Headline organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturer based in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 employees. The Ryuk event had shut down all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's data protection had been online at the start of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom demand (exceeding $200,000) and wishfully thinking for the best, but ultimately reached out to Progent.
"I cannot tell you enough about the care Progent gave us throughout the most stressful time of (our) company's existence. We most likely would have paid the hackers behind this attack except for the confidence the Progent team gave us. That you could get our e-mail system and critical servers back on-line sooner than one week was something I thought impossible. Each person I talked with or messaged at Progent was hell bent on getting our company operational and was working breakneck pace to bail us out."
Progent worked together with the customer to quickly understand and prioritize the key applications that had to be addressed to make it possible to continue company operations:
- Microsoft Active Directory
- Electronic Mail
- Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To get going, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes event mitigation industry best practices by isolating and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then initiated the task of recovering Active Directory, the key technology of enterprise environments built on Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not operate without AD, and the customer's MRP system utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory services for access to the database.
Within 2 days, Progent was able to recover Active Directory services to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then helped perform reinstallations and storage recovery on key systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server schema and attributes were intact, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to find non-encrypted OST files (Outlook Offline Data Files) on various PCs in order to recover mail data. A recent offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP systems made them able to restore these essential programs back servicing users. Although a lot of work remained to recover completely from the Ryuk attack, critical services were recovered rapidly:
"For the most part, the production operation survived unscathed and we did not miss any customer deliverables."
During the following month critical milestones in the restoration project were made through tight cooperation between Progent team members and the client:
- Self-hosted web applications were returned to operation with no loss of information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than four million archived emails was brought on-line and accessible to users.
- CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/AP/AR/Inventory Control functions were 100 percent restored.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was brought online.
- Most of the user workstations were fully operational.
"A lot of what was accomplished in the early hours is nearly entirely a blur for me, but my management will not forget the urgency each of your team put in to help get our company back. I have trusted Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and every time Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This event was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A probable business-killing catastrophe was avoided through the efforts of results-oriented professionals, a wide array of technical expertise, and close collaboration. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the ransomware virus incident detailed here would have been identified and prevented with modern security systems and best practices, user and IT administrator training, and well designed incident response procedures for data backup and applying software patches, the reality is that state-sponsored cybercriminals from China, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are not going away. If you do fall victim to a ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's team of professionals has a proven track record in crypto-ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and information systems restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were involved), thanks very much for making it so I could get some sleep after we made it through the initial push. All of you did an fabulous effort, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
