Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that poses an extinction-level threat for organizations poorly prepared for an attack. Different versions of ransomware like the CryptoLocker, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for many years and continue to inflict harm. More recent variants of crypto-ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Egregor, along with frequent unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of online critical data but also infect many available system restores and backups. Files synchronized to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a vulnerable data protection solution, it can render any restore operations useless and effectively knocks the datacenter back to zero.

Restoring applications and information following a ransomware outage becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business struggles to stop lateral movement, remove the crypto-ransomware, and restore business-critical operations. Since ransomware takes time to move laterally, penetrations are usually sprung at night, when penetrations typically take longer to discover. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly marshalling and coordinating a knowledgeable response team.

Progent makes available a variety of services for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are team training to help recognize and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to deployment of modern security gateways with AI technology from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine zero-day cyber attacks intelligently. Progent in addition offers the assistance of experienced ransomware recovery professionals with the talent and commitment to reconstruct a breached system as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
Following a ransomware invasion, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not ensure that merciless criminals will provide the keys to decipher all your information. Kaspersky determined that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their information even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions. The alternative is to setup from scratch the vital components of your IT environment. Absent access to essential information backups, this requires a wide range of skill sets, top notch team management, and the capability to work non-stop until the job is finished.

For decades, Progent has provided professional IT services for businesses across the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have been awarded top certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security engineers have garnered internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISM, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial management and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the skills to quickly determine necessary systems and organize the remaining components of your Information Technology environment following a ransomware penetration and rebuild them into a functioning system.

Progent's ransomware team of experts has best of breed project management applications to orchestrate the complicated recovery process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working quickly and together with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to get key applications back on-line as soon as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Intrusion Response
A customer sought out Progent after their organization was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been created by North Korean state criminal gangs, possibly using strategies leaked from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific organizations with little or no room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative instances of ransomware. Well Known targets include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a regional manufacturing company located in the Chicago metro area with around 500 staff members. The Ryuk intrusion had disabled all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's system backups had been directly accessible at the time of the intrusion and were eventually encrypted. The client was pursuing financing for paying the ransom demand (exceeding $200K) and praying for good luck, but ultimately brought in Progent.

"I can't speak enough in regards to the help Progent provided us during the most critical time of (our) company's existence. We would have paid the cyber criminals if not for the confidence the Progent team provided us. That you could get our messaging and important applications back into operation in less than a week was something I thought impossible. Every single staff member I spoke to or messaged at Progent was laser focused on getting our company operational and was working day and night to bail us out."

Progent worked with the client to quickly identify and prioritize the critical systems that had to be restored in order to resume departmental operations:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Electronic Messaging
  • MRP System
To get going, Progent adhered to ransomware incident response industry best practices by stopping lateral movement and disinfecting systems. Progent then started the work of rebuilding Active Directory, the core of enterprise systems built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not function without Active Directory, and the client's accounting and MRP applications used Microsoft SQL, which requires Active Directory services for security authorization to the databases.

In less than 2 days, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then charged ahead with rebuilding and storage recovery of mission critical servers. All Exchange data and attributes were intact, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to find intact OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on user desktop computers and laptops to recover email messages. A recent offline backup of the client's financials/ERP software made them able to recover these required applications back online. Although a large amount of work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, essential systems were returned to operations rapidly:

"For the most part, the production operation ran fairly normal throughout and we did not miss any customer shipments."

Over the following couple of weeks important milestones in the restoration project were achieved in close cooperation between Progent team members and the customer:

  • In-house web applications were returned to operation with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Server containing more than four million historical messages was brought on-line and available for users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory modules were fully recovered.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was installed.
  • Most of the user PCs were operational.

"So much of what transpired in the early hours is mostly a haze for me, but my team will not soon forget the urgency each of you put in to help get our business back. I have utilized Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This time was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A potential business extinction disaster was evaded through the efforts of hard-working professionals, a broad spectrum of knowledge, and tight collaboration. Although in post mortem the crypto-ransomware attack detailed here should have been prevented with modern cyber security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, staff training, and appropriate incident response procedures for information backup and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the reality is that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware incursion, remember that Progent's roster of experts has a proven track record in ransomware virus blocking, removal, and file disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were helping), thank you for making it so I could get rested after we got over the initial push. Everyone did an amazing job, and if anyone is around the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
