ProSight Ransomware Preparedness ReportRansomware has become the weapon of choice for the major cyber-crime organizations and malicious governments, posing a potentially lethal threat to businesses that are breached. Modern variations of ransomware target everything, including online backup, making even selective recovery a challenging and expensive exercise. New versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Phobos, LockBit and Egregor have emerged, replacing WannaCry, TeslaCrypt, and Petya in prominence, sophistication, and destructive impact.

Most ransomware breaches come from innocent-looking emails that include dangerous links or file attachments, and many are so-called "zero-day" variants that elude the defenses of legacy signature-matching antivirus filters. Although user education and up-front identification are critical to protect your network against ransomware attacks, best practices dictate that you expect that some attacks will inevitably get through and that you deploy a solid backup mechanism that allows you to restore files and services quickly with little if any losses.

Progent's ProSight Ransomware Preparedness Report is a low-cost service centered around a remote discussion with a Progent security consultant experienced in ransomware protection and repair. During this assessment Progent will work with your Lubbock IT management staff to gather pertinent information concerning your security setup and backup processes. Progent will utilize this information to produce a Basic Security and Best Practices Report detailing how to follow leading practices for implementing and managing your cybersecurity and backup systems to block or recover from a crypto-ransomware assault.

Progent's Basic Security and Best Practices Assessment focuses on key issues associated with ransomware prevention and restoration recovery. The report covers:

Cybersecurity

  • Effective allocation and use of administration accounts
  • Correct NTFS (New Technology File System) and SMB (Server Message Block) permissions
  • Optimal firewall configuration
  • Secure RDP connections
  • Guidance for AntiVirus (AV) filtering selection and configuration
Backups
  • Split permission architecture for backup integrity
  • Backing up required servers including AD
  • Geographically dispersed backups with cloud backup to Microsoft Azure
The remote interview process included with the ProSight Ransomware Vulnerability Report service takes about one hour for a typical small business and requires more time for larger or more complex IT environments. The report document includes recommendations for enhancing your ability to block or recover from a ransomware attack and Progent offers as-needed expertise to help your business to create a cost-effective security/data backup solution tailored to your business requirements.

About Ransomware
Ransomware is a variety of malware that encrypts or deletes files so they are unusable or are made publicly available. Ransomware sometimes locks the victim's computer. To avoid the damage, the target is asked to pay a certain ransom, usually in the form of a crypto currency such as Bitcoin, within a brief time window. It is not guaranteed that paying the extortion price will recover the damaged files or prevent its exposure to the public. Files can be altered or erased across a network based on the target's write permissions, and you cannot solve the strong encryption algorithms used on the compromised files. A typical ransomware attack vector is booby-trapped email, whereby the victim is lured into responding to by a social engineering exploit called spear phishing. This causes the email message to appear to come from a familiar source. Another common vulnerability is a poorly protected Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) port.

The ransomware variant CryptoLocker ushered in the modern era of crypto-ransomware in 2013, and the monetary losses attributed to by different versions of ransomware is said to be billions of dollars annually, more than doubling every other year. Famous attacks include Locky, and NotPetya. Recent high-profile threats like Ryuk, Maze and CryptoWall are more complex and have caused more havoc than earlier versions. Even if your backup/recovery procedures permit your business to restore your ransomed data, you can still be threatened by so-called exfiltration, where stolen data are exposed to the public (known as "doxxing"). Because additional versions of ransomware crop up every day, there is no certainty that conventional signature-matching anti-virus tools will detect a new malware. If threat does appear in an email, it is important that your end users have learned to identify social engineering tricks. Your ultimate defense is a sound scheme for performing and retaining offsite backups and the use of reliable restoration platforms.
