Ransomware : Your Worst IT Nightmare
Ransomware has become a modern cyberplague that poses an enterprise-level danger for organizations unprepared for an assault. Versions of ransomware such as CryptoLocker, Fusob, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for years and continue to inflict harm. Newer variants of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Egregor, plus more unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt online files but also infect many accessible system protection mechanisms. Data synchronized to cloud environments can also be corrupted. In a poorly architected environment, it can make automated restoration hopeless and effectively knocks the datacenter back to square one.
Getting back programs and data following a ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business fights to stop lateral movement, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and restore business-critical activity. Since crypto-ransomware requires time to spread, assaults are often launched on weekends, when attacks typically take more time to detect. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and organizing a capable mitigation team.
Progent has an assortment of help services for securing businesses from ransomware attacks. Among these are staff training to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of the latest generation security appliances with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine zero-day threats rapidly. Progent also offers the services of veteran crypto-ransomware recovery consultants with the talent and perseverance to rebuild a breached system as soon as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware attack, paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that merciless criminals will respond with the needed codes to unencrypt any of your files. Kaspersky determined that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can be in the millions. The other path is to setup from scratch the key components of your Information Technology environment. Without access to complete system backups, this requires a broad complement of skills, professional team management, and the willingness to work non-stop until the task is complete.
For two decades, Progent has made available professional IT services for businesses across the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes professionals who have been awarded top industry certifications in important technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have earned internationally-renowned certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience in accounting and ERP applications. This breadth of experience provides Progent the capability to rapidly ascertain critical systems and consolidate the remaining components of your Information Technology environment after a ransomware event and rebuild them into an operational system.
Progent's ransomware team of experts uses top notch project management applications to coordinate the complicated recovery process. Progent appreciates the importance of working swiftly and in concert with a client's management and IT resources to assign priority to tasks and to get essential services back on line as fast as humanly possible.
Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Recovery
A customer escalated to Progent after their network system was brought down by the Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been created by North Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of adopting approaches exposed from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific companies with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is among the most lucrative examples of ransomware. High publicized organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a regional manufacturing business located in the Chicago metro area with about 500 employees. The Ryuk penetration had disabled all essential operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's data backups had been directly accessible at the start of the attack and were encrypted. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom (in excess of two hundred thousand dollars) and praying for the best, but ultimately utilized Progent.
"I cannot thank you enough in regards to the care Progent provided us during the most stressful time of (our) company's life. We may have had to pay the criminal gangs if not for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. That you could get our e-mail and important applications back on-line sooner than a week was earth shattering. Every single staff member I worked with or messaged at Progent was amazingly focused on getting my company operational and was working breakneck pace to bail us out."
Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly identify and assign priority to the essential applications that had to be recovered in order to continue company operations:
- Active Directory
- Electronic Mail
- Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent adhered to ransomware incident mitigation best practices by stopping the spread and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then initiated the steps of restoring Microsoft AD, the heart of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not operate without Active Directory, and the businesses' financials and MRP software used Microsoft SQL, which depends on Active Directory services for security authorization to the databases.
In less than 2 days, Progent was able to re-build Windows Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then accomplished rebuilding and hard drive recovery on the most important applications. All Microsoft Exchange Server ties and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to locate local OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on various PCs to recover email messages. A recent off-line backup of the customer's accounting/MRP software made it possible to return these required applications back available to users. Although significant work still had to be done to recover fully from the Ryuk attack, the most important services were recovered quickly:
"For the most part, the assembly line operation was never shut down and we delivered all customer deliverables."
Throughout the following month key milestones in the restoration project were accomplished through close collaboration between Progent consultants and the client:
- Self-hosted web sites were restored without losing any data.
- The MailStore Server with over 4 million archived emails was restored to operations and accessible to users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control capabilities were 100% recovered.
- A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was set up and programmed.
- Most of the user workstations were operational.
"A lot of what transpired that first week is nearly entirely a haze for me, but my management will not forget the urgency all of your team accomplished to give us our business back. I've been working together with Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This time was a life saver."
Conclusion
A probable business-killing catastrophe was avoided due to dedicated professionals, a wide spectrum of technical expertise, and close collaboration. Although in retrospect the crypto-ransomware attack detailed here could have been identified and disabled with current security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, team training, and well designed incident response procedures for data protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the reality is that government-sponsored cyber criminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus blocking, remediation, and information systems restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others that were helping), I'm grateful for making it so I could get some sleep after we made it past the initial fire. All of you did an amazing job, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
