Ransomware : Your Feared IT Catastrophe
Ransomware has become an escalating cyberplague that poses an existential danger for organizations unprepared for an assault. Different iterations of crypto-ransomware such as CryptoLocker, WannaCry, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for years and continue to cause damage. Newer strains of crypto-ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Nephilim, as well as additional as yet unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt on-line data files but also infiltrate most available system backups. Files synchronized to the cloud can also be encrypted. In a poorly designed system, it can render any restore operations impossible and effectively knocks the network back to square one.
Restoring services and data following a crypto-ransomware outage becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business struggles to contain, cleanup the ransomware, and resume enterprise-critical activity. Since ransomware needs time to move laterally, attacks are usually sprung during weekends and nights, when attacks are likely to take more time to uncover. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly assembling and organizing a knowledgeable mitigation team.
Progent provides an assortment of solutions for protecting enterprises from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are user education to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus installation of next-generation security gateways with AI capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and disable new threats rapidly. Progent in addition can provide the assistance of seasoned ransomware recovery engineers with the skills and commitment to re-deploy a breached environment as soon as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Recovery Help
Soon after a ransomware penetration, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that cyber hackers will return the keys to unencrypt any of your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can be in the millions of dollars. The alternative is to piece back together the key elements of your IT environment. Absent the availability of essential information backups, this requires a broad complement of skill sets, top notch team management, and the capability to work continuously until the recovery project is over.
For two decades, Progent has made available certified expert Information Technology services for businesses throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have attained top certifications in key technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise with financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of experience provides Progent the skills to quickly understand necessary systems and re-organize the surviving components of your network system following a ransomware event and configure them into a functioning system.
Progent's ransomware group deploys best of breed project management tools to coordinate the complicated restoration process. Progent appreciates the importance of working rapidly and together with a client's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to get the most important systems back online as fast as humanly possible.
Customer Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Penetration Response
A customer engaged Progent after their network was crashed by Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is believed to have been launched by North Korean state hackers, possibly using strategies exposed from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk seeks specific companies with little room for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable iterations of ransomware. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing company headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk penetration had disabled all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the beginning of the attack and were eventually encrypted. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom demand (more than $200K) and praying for good luck, but ultimately brought in Progent.
"I cannot say enough in regards to the expertise Progent gave us throughout the most fearful period of (our) businesses existence. We may have had to pay the hackers behind this attack except for the confidence the Progent group provided us. The fact that you could get our messaging and production servers back into operation faster than a week was something I thought impossible. Each staff member I spoke to or texted at Progent was totally committed on getting us working again and was working at all hours to bail us out."
Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly get our arms around and prioritize the critical elements that needed to be recovered to make it possible to continue company operations:
- Windows Active Directory
- Electronic Messaging
- MRP System
To start, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes penetration mitigation industry best practices by stopping lateral movement and clearing infected systems. Progent then initiated the steps of rebuilding Microsoft Active Directory, the heart of enterprise systems built on Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not function without Active Directory, and the client's accounting and MRP applications used Microsoft SQL, which depends on Active Directory services for authentication to the databases.
In less than two days, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-penetration state. Progent then accomplished reinstallations and hard drive recovery of critical servers. All Exchange ties and configuration information were usable, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to assemble local OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Folder Files) on various workstations and laptops in order to recover email data. A recent offline backup of the businesses financials/ERP software made them able to recover these required services back servicing users. Although a large amount of work still had to be done to recover completely from the Ryuk event, the most important systems were restored rapidly:
"For the most part, the manufacturing operation showed little impact and we produced all customer deliverables."
During the next couple of weeks critical milestones in the restoration project were made through close collaboration between Progent consultants and the client:
- Internal web sites were returned to operation with no loss of information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over four million archived emails was brought online and accessible to users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control modules were 100% operational.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was deployed.
- Nearly all of the desktops and laptops were functioning as before the incident.
"So much of what went on that first week is nearly entirely a blur for me, but my team will not forget the dedication all of you accomplished to help get our business back. I've been working together with Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and each time Progent has come through and delivered. This situation was no exception but maybe more Herculean."
Conclusion
A potential business-ending catastrophe was dodged with results-oriented professionals, a wide range of subject matter expertise, and tight teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the ransomware attack described here could have been stopped with current cyber security technology solutions and recognized best practices, user and IT administrator training, and well thought out incident response procedures for information protection and proper patching controls, the fact remains that government-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are relentless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has proven experience in ransomware virus defense, removal, and data restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were helping), thanks very much for making it so I could get rested after we made it over the most critical parts. All of you did an incredible job, and if anyone that helped is around the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
