Ransomware : Your Worst IT Catastrophe
Ransomware Remediation ExpertsRansomware has become an escalating cyberplague that poses an enterprise-level threat for organizations vulnerable to an attack. Versions of ransomware such as CryptoLocker, CryptoWall, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for years and continue to inflict damage. Recent variants of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Egregor, plus frequent unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt online data but also infiltrate any available system protection. Data synchronized to cloud environments can also be encrypted. In a poorly architected system, this can render any restoration impossible and effectively sets the datacenter back to square one.

Restoring services and data following a ransomware outage becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business fights to stop the spread, eradicate the ransomware, and restore business-critical operations. Because ransomware requires time to replicate, assaults are frequently launched on weekends, when penetrations are likely to take longer to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly marshalling and organizing an experienced mitigation team.

Progent provides a range of support services for securing organizations from ransomware penetrations. Among these are user training to help identify and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of modern security appliances with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine zero-day cyber attacks quickly. Progent in addition provides the assistance of experienced ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and perseverance to reconstruct a breached system as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
After a ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that cyber criminals will return the needed codes to unencrypt any or all of your files. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never recovered their files even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The fallback is to setup from scratch the essential parts of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of full system backups, this calls for a wide range of IT skills, professional project management, and the capability to work non-stop until the task is completed.

For two decades, Progent has made available expert Information Technology services for companies across the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes professionals who have attained high-level certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's security consultants have garnered internationally-renowned certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with accounting and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the ability to quickly identify necessary systems and organize the surviving parts of your Information Technology system after a ransomware attack and configure them into an operational system.

Progent's ransomware team of experts deploys top notch project management applications to orchestrate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent appreciates the importance of working swiftly and in concert with a customer's management and IT staff to prioritize tasks and to get critical systems back on-line as fast as possible.

Customer Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Virus Recovery
A small business hired Progent after their network system was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is generally considered to have been deployed by North Korean state sponsored hackers, possibly adopting strategies exposed from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific companies with limited ability to sustain disruption and is one of the most lucrative incarnations of ransomware viruses. Major victims include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing company located in the Chicago metro area with around 500 employees. The Ryuk intrusion had shut down all essential operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's backups had been on-line at the beginning of the attack and were destroyed. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (more than $200,000) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but in the end reached out to Progent.

"I can't thank you enough about the help Progent gave us throughout the most fearful period of (our) businesses existence. We may have had to pay the criminal gangs except for the confidence the Progent experts afforded us. That you were able to get our e-mail and key servers back into operation sooner than one week was something I thought impossible. Every single expert I worked with or communicated with at Progent was laser focused on getting our system up and was working breakneck pace to bail us out."

Progent worked with the client to quickly understand and assign priority to the mission critical elements that needed to be addressed to make it possible to restart business operations:

  • Active Directory
  • Exchange Server
  • Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent adhered to Anti-virus incident mitigation best practices by stopping the spread and disinfecting systems. Progent then began the steps of bringing back online Active Directory, the heart of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not operate without Windows AD, and the client's financials and MRP software used Microsoft SQL, which needs Active Directory services for authentication to the information.

Within 2 days, Progent was able to recover Windows Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then initiated rebuilding and hard drive recovery of mission critical applications. All Exchange data and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to find non-encrypted OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Folder Files) on various workstations and laptops in order to recover mail messages. A not too old off-line backup of the customer's financials/MRP software made them able to recover these required programs back servicing users. Although significant work needed to be completed to recover completely from the Ryuk event, core systems were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the production operation did not miss a beat and we made all customer sales."

Throughout the next few weeks key milestones in the recovery process were achieved in tight collaboration between Progent team members and the customer:

  • Internal web sites were restored without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over 4 million archived emails was restored to operations and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables/Inventory functions were completely recovered.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was installed and configured.
  • Ninety percent of the user desktops and notebooks were being used by staff.

"Much of what went on during the initial response is nearly entirely a blur for me, but my management will not soon forget the countless hours each of your team put in to give us our company back. I have been working together with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered. This time was a stunning achievement."

Conclusion
A potential business disaster was avoided with dedicated experts, a broad range of knowledge, and close collaboration. Although in retrospect the ransomware virus penetration detailed here could have been blocked with modern security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework or ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, user training, and properly executed security procedures for information protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact is that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware incident, remember that Progent's roster of experts has substantial experience in ransomware virus blocking, remediation, and file disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (and any others that were helping), I'm grateful for allowing me to get some sleep after we made it through the first week. All of you did an amazing effort, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
