Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Catastrophe
Crypto-Ransomware Recovery ExpertsCrypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that represents an enterprise-level threat for businesses unprepared for an assault. Versions of ransomware like the Reveton, CryptoWall, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and continue to cause havoc. More recent versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Egregor, along with more unnamed malware, not only do encryption of on-line data but also infect most available system protection. Data synchronized to cloud environments can also be encrypted. In a vulnerable data protection solution, this can render automatic restoration impossible and basically knocks the network back to zero.

Recovering applications and data following a ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business fights to stop the spread, clear the virus, and resume business-critical operations. Because ransomware requires time to replicate, assaults are often launched on weekends, when penetrations typically take more time to notice. This compounds the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and coordinating a knowledgeable mitigation team.

Progent provides an assortment of support services for protecting enterprises from crypto-ransomware penetrations. Among these are team education to help recognize and avoid phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus deployment of modern security solutions with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish zero-day cyber threats intelligently. Progent also offers the services of experienced ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and perseverance to restore a breached network as quickly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
Soon after a ransomware event, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber hackers will provide the codes to unencrypt any of your information. Kaspersky estimated that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never restored their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The fallback is to setup from scratch the vital elements of your IT environment. Absent the availability of complete information backups, this requires a broad complement of skill sets, well-coordinated team management, and the capability to work non-stop until the job is complete.

For twenty years, Progent has made available certified expert IT services for businesses throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have attained advanced industry certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security consultants have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise in accounting and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the skills to knowledgably determine critical systems and re-organize the remaining components of your IT environment after a ransomware event and configure them into an operational network.

Progent's security group utilizes top notch project management systems to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent appreciates the importance of working quickly and together with a customer's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to put critical systems back on line as soon as humanly possible.

Customer Story: A Successful Ransomware Attack Response
A business sought out Progent after their network was attacked by Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been deployed by North Korean state sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of using techniques leaked from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific businesses with little or no tolerance for disruption and is one of the most profitable examples of ransomware malware. High publicized organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturer located in the Chicago metro area with around 500 staff members. The Ryuk event had disabled all company operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's data backups had been online at the start of the intrusion and were damaged. The client considered paying the ransom (exceeding $200K) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but in the end called Progent.

"I cannot say enough about the support Progent provided us during the most fearful time of (our) company's existence. We would have paid the cyber criminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts afforded us. The fact that you could get our messaging and critical servers back on-line in less than 1 week was earth shattering. Each consultant I got help from or e-mailed at Progent was laser focused on getting our company operational and was working day and night on our behalf."

Progent worked hand in hand the client to rapidly get our arms around and prioritize the most important services that had to be recovered in order to continue departmental operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Electronic Mail
  • Accounting/MRP
To start, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes event mitigation industry best practices by isolating and clearing infected systems. Progent then started the process of bringing back online Microsoft Active Directory, the core of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange email will not work without Active Directory, and the client's MRP software leveraged Microsoft SQL, which needs Windows AD for security authorization to the databases.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then charged ahead with rebuilding and hard drive recovery on key applications. All Exchange ties and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to find non-encrypted OST data files (Outlook Offline Folder Files) on staff desktop computers to recover email messages. A recent offline backup of the customer's accounting software made them able to restore these essential programs back servicing users. Although major work still had to be done to recover fully from the Ryuk attack, the most important services were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the production operation never missed a beat and we made all customer orders."

During the following month key milestones in the recovery project were made through close cooperation between Progent engineers and the client:

  • In-house web applications were brought back up without losing any data.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million historical messages was brought online and available for users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/AR/Inventory Control capabilities were 100% functional.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was brought on-line.
  • Ninety percent of the desktops and laptops were functioning as before the incident.

"A lot of what transpired that first week is nearly entirely a fog for me, but my team will not forget the urgency each and every one of the team put in to help get our company back. I have been working together with Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered. This situation was a stunning achievement."

Conclusion
A possible company-ending catastrophe was avoided by results-oriented professionals, a wide array of IT skills, and tight collaboration. Although in retrospect the ransomware attack detailed here would have been shut down with up-to-date cyber security systems and best practices, staff training, and well thought out security procedures for information backup and applying software patches, the reality remains that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's team of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus blocking, mitigation, and information systems recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (and any others who were contributing), I'm grateful for allowing me to get rested after we made it through the initial fire. All of you did an impressive job, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
