Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a modern cyberplague that poses an existential danger for businesses poorly prepared for an attack. Different iterations of ransomware such as CryptoLocker, CryptoWall, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for many years and continue to inflict damage. Modern variants of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Egregor, along with additional as yet unnamed malware, not only do encryption of online information but also infiltrate any available system protection mechanisms. Information synched to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be encrypted. In a vulnerable environment, this can render automatic recovery hopeless and effectively sets the network back to zero.

Getting back applications and information after a crypto-ransomware outage becomes a sprint against time as the targeted business struggles to contain the damage, clear the crypto-ransomware, and restore business-critical activity. Since ransomware requires time to replicate, assaults are frequently sprung during weekends and nights, when penetrations tend to take longer to recognize. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly marshalling and coordinating an experienced response team.

Progent has a variety of help services for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are user education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of modern security gateways with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to detect and suppress day-zero cyber attacks intelligently. Progent in addition can provide the services of experienced ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and commitment to rebuild a compromised environment as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Support Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware event, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that merciless criminals will return the needed keys to unencrypt any of your information. Kaspersky Labs estimated that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are commonly a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The fallback is to re-install the critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to full system backups, this calls for a broad complement of skill sets, well-coordinated team management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the job is complete.

For two decades, Progent has offered expert IT services for companies throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes professionals who have attained advanced industry certifications in foundation technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity consultants have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience in accounting and ERP applications. This breadth of experience affords Progent the skills to efficiently ascertain important systems and re-organize the remaining parts of your IT system after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning system.

Progent's security team uses best of breed project management tools to orchestrate the complicated recovery process. Progent knows the importance of acting swiftly and in unison with a customer's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to put the most important applications back on line as soon as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Attack Recovery
A customer engaged Progent after their network system was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been developed by North Korean government sponsored hackers, possibly adopting approaches exposed from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk seeks specific businesses with limited ability to sustain operational disruption and is among the most profitable versions of ransomware malware. Well Known organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing business located in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 staff members. The Ryuk attack had brought down all essential operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the time of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and hoping for the best, but ultimately utilized Progent.

"I can't tell you enough in regards to the expertise Progent gave us during the most critical period of (our) businesses survival. We most likely would have paid the Hackers except for the confidence the Progent group afforded us. That you could get our e-mail system and essential applications back into operation faster than seven days was something I thought impossible. Each expert I interacted with or communicated with at Progent was absolutely committed on getting us operational and was working 24 by 7 to bail us out."

Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly determine and assign priority to the critical applications that had to be addressed to make it possible to continue business operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Accounting/MRP
To begin, Progent followed Anti-virus penetration mitigation best practices by isolating and removing active viruses. Progent then began the steps of bringing back online Windows Active Directory, the heart of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not work without AD, and the customer's MRP system used Microsoft SQL Server, which needs Active Directory services for authentication to the information.

Within 48 hours, Progent was able to recover Windows Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then completed rebuilding and hard drive recovery on mission critical systems. All Exchange data and attributes were usable, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to assemble intact OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on user desktop computers to recover mail information. A not too old offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP software made it possible to return these essential applications back online. Although major work remained to recover completely from the Ryuk damage, core systems were returned to operations rapidly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we did not miss any customer orders."

Throughout the next few weeks critical milestones in the restoration project were accomplished through close collaboration between Progent consultants and the client:

  • In-house web sites were restored without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Server with over 4 million archived emails was spun up and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control modules were completely restored.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was installed.
  • 90% of the user workstations were operational.

"A lot of what occurred during the initial response is nearly entirely a haze for me, but I will not soon forget the commitment each of you put in to help get our business back. I've utilized Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This situation was no exception but maybe more Herculean."

Conclusion
A probable business catastrophe was dodged due to dedicated experts, a wide spectrum of subject matter expertise, and tight teamwork. Although in hindsight the crypto-ransomware incident described here should have been identified and stopped with modern cyber security systems and ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, staff training, and well thought out incident response procedures for data protection and proper patching controls, the reality is that government-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are not going away. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware virus, remember that Progent's roster of experts has substantial experience in ransomware virus blocking, removal, and file recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others that were helping), thank you for allowing me to get some sleep after we made it past the first week. All of you did an impressive effort, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
