Crypto-Ransomware : Your Worst IT Disaster
Ransomware Remediation ConsultantsCrypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that presents an enterprise-level danger for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an attack. Versions of crypto-ransomware such as Reveton, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for many years and still cause harm. The latest variants of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Egregor, along with frequent as yet unnamed malware, not only do encryption of on-line data files but also infect many available system protection. Information replicated to the cloud can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed environment, it can make automated restoration useless and effectively sets the datacenter back to zero.

Getting back applications and data after a ransomware outage becomes a sprint against time as the victim struggles to contain, remove the ransomware, and restore enterprise-critical operations. Since ransomware requires time to replicate, assaults are frequently sprung during nights and weekends, when successful penetrations may take more time to recognize. This compounds the difficulty of promptly assembling and orchestrating a knowledgeable response team.

Progent offers a range of help services for protecting enterprises from ransomware attacks. Among these are user education to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of next-generation security solutions with AI technology from SentinelOne to detect and suppress day-zero cyber threats automatically. Progent in addition offers the services of experienced ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and commitment to rebuild a compromised network as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
Subsequent to a ransomware attack, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will provide the needed keys to decrypt all your files. Kaspersky Labs determined that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never restored their files after having paid the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can be in the millions. The alternative is to piece back together the mission-critical elements of your IT environment. Without the availability of essential system backups, this requires a wide range of IT skills, professional team management, and the capability to work continuously until the task is finished.

For twenty years, Progent has offered certified expert Information Technology services for companies throughout the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have been awarded top industry certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity specialists have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the skills to rapidly understand necessary systems and re-organize the surviving parts of your computer network environment following a ransomware attack and configure them into an operational system.

Progent's ransomware group deploys top notch project management applications to coordinate the complex restoration process. Progent appreciates the importance of working swiftly and in concert with a customer's management and Information Technology staff to prioritize tasks and to put essential applications back on line as fast as humanly possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Response
A business engaged Progent after their network system was brought down by Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is thought to have been created by North Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of adopting approaches exposed from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific companies with little or no ability to sustain disruption and is among the most profitable iterations of crypto-ransomware. Major organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing company located in Chicago and has around 500 staff members. The Ryuk event had paralyzed all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's backups had been on-line at the time of the intrusion and were damaged. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200,000) and hoping for the best, but ultimately reached out to Progent.

"I can't thank you enough about the care Progent provided us during the most critical period of (our) businesses existence. We may have had to pay the cybercriminals except for the confidence the Progent group afforded us. The fact that you were able to get our e-mail and critical applications back online faster than one week was earth shattering. Every single person I worked with or messaged at Progent was amazingly focused on getting us working again and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the customer to quickly identify and assign priority to the key areas that had to be addressed in order to continue company functions:

  • Active Directory
  • Electronic Messaging
  • Accounting/MRP
To begin, Progent adhered to ransomware incident response best practices by halting the spread and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then initiated the task of recovering Microsoft Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not operate without Active Directory, and the customer's accounting and MRP software utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory services for security authorization to the database.

In less than two days, Progent was able to rebuild Windows Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then performed rebuilding and storage recovery on critical systems. All Exchange Server data and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to assemble non-encrypted OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on various desktop computers in order to recover mail messages. A recent offline backup of the businesses financials/MRP systems made them able to restore these required programs back online. Although major work was left to recover completely from the Ryuk event, critical systems were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation ran fairly normal throughout and we made all customer sales."

Over the following month important milestones in the restoration project were achieved in tight cooperation between Progent consultants and the customer:

  • Internal web applications were restored with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million historical emails was spun up and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/AP/AR/Inventory Control capabilities were 100% recovered.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was set up and programmed.
  • Ninety percent of the desktop computers were back into operation.

"A lot of what was accomplished those first few days is mostly a fog for me, but our team will not forget the commitment each of the team accomplished to help get our business back. I have been working together with Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and each time Progent has shined and delivered as promised. This situation was a life saver."

Conclusion
A likely business-ending disaster was avoided through the efforts of hard-working experts, a wide array of IT skills, and close teamwork. Although in retrospect the ransomware incident detailed here should have been identified and stopped with advanced cyber security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, user and IT administrator training, and properly executed incident response procedures for backup and proper patching controls, the reality is that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware penetration, remember that Progent's team of professionals has a proven track record in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, removal, and data restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Tony (and any others who were contributing), thank you for letting me get some sleep after we made it over the first week. Everyone did an fabulous job, and if anyone is in the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
