Microsoft has shipped Data Protection Manager 2010 (DPM 2010), a comprehensive backup-and-restore solution built specifically for protecting Windows file and application servers and clients. System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 allows continual,non-disruptive backup of physical and virtual computers to local or remote hard disks as well as off-line copying to tape, and permits fast, easy recovery of whole servers or single files. DPM's disk drive backup delivers the speed and reliability required to protect your critical business data without disrupting network operations, while DPM's tape drive compatibility makes long-term archiving expenses low and helps ensure compliance with contractual or regulatory retention mandates.
Many small companies still depend on outdated, tape-based backup and recovery technology. In the event of a major IT failure, this can result in significant revenue loss because of prolonged network downtime and, possibly, lost information. Tape-based protection procedures are unreliable because the media is sensitive to mechanical wear and requires a carefully maintained warehousing environment. Microsoft recorded a whopping 17% failure incidence when using mag tape to back up their own operational servers. Tape is also inherently slow. Consequently, backups require periodic downtime, restoration points are commonly separated by days instead of minutes, and the restoration process is long and hard to manage.
Data Protection Manager gets around these shortcomings by using fast, reliable hard disks for short-term backup while restricting tape to long-term archiving. The speed of disks allows continual non-disruptive backup, shrinks recovery point spacing to as low as 15 minutes, and dramatically lowers restoration time. For enhanced disk reliability, DPM 2010 supports high availability disk clustering and non-stop arrays. New features of DPM 2010 include operation with Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V virtualization and CSV, the option to recover single files, Database Availability Group support for Exchange Server 2010, enhanced integration with SharePoint, and full data protection during a Live Migration process.
