Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Disaster
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that represents an enterprise-level danger for organizations unprepared for an attack. Versions of crypto-ransomware such as CrySIS, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for many years and still inflict damage. More recent versions of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, LockBit or Egregor, plus additional unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt on-line data but also infect any configured system backup. Files synchronized to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be ransomed. In a poorly designed environment, it can make automated restore operations impossible and basically knocks the datacenter back to square one.
Restoring services and information following a crypto-ransomware outage becomes a race against the clock as the targeted organization struggles to stop the spread, eradicate the ransomware, and resume mission-critical operations. Since crypto-ransomware takes time to replicate, attacks are often launched at night, when successful attacks typically take more time to discover. This compounds the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and organizing a knowledgeable response team.
Progent makes available a range of solutions for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware events. Among these are user education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus setup and configuration of modern security gateways with AI capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and suppress zero-day threats automatically. Progent in addition offers the services of experienced crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the track record and perseverance to restore a compromised environment as urgently as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Recovery Help
After a ransomware penetration, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that cyber criminals will return the codes to decipher all your data. Kaspersky determined that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their data after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions. The other path is to setup from scratch the mission-critical elements of your IT environment. Without access to full information backups, this calls for a broad range of IT skills, well-coordinated team management, and the willingness to work non-stop until the recovery project is finished.
For decades, Progent has provided expert Information Technology services for companies across the U.S. and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes engineers who have earned advanced certifications in key technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with financial management and ERP software solutions. This breadth of expertise affords Progent the ability to knowledgably understand critical systems and organize the remaining components of your IT system following a crypto-ransomware penetration and configure them into an operational network.
Progent's recovery team of experts deploys best of breed project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent knows the importance of working rapidly and in concert with a client's management and Information Technology resources to prioritize tasks and to get the most important services back on line as soon as humanly possible.
Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Penetration Restoration
A customer escalated to Progent after their network system was penetrated by Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is believed to have been created by North Korean government sponsored criminal gangs, possibly adopting techniques exposed from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific organizations with little room for disruption and is one of the most lucrative iterations of ransomware. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing company headquartered in Chicago and has around 500 employees. The Ryuk penetration had disabled all essential operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's data backups had been online at the start of the attack and were encrypted. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200,000) and praying for good luck, but ultimately brought in Progent.
"I can't tell you enough about the expertise Progent gave us throughout the most stressful time of (our) company's existence. We would have paid the hackers behind this attack except for the confidence the Progent team provided us. The fact that you were able to get our e-mail system and essential applications back online sooner than 1 week was something I thought impossible. Each consultant I got help from or texted at Progent was urgently focused on getting our company operational and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."
Progent worked with the client to rapidly understand and prioritize the mission critical services that needed to be restored in order to resume business operations:
- Active Directory
- Microsoft Exchange Server
- Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To get going, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes incident mitigation best practices by halting lateral movement and removing active viruses. Progent then initiated the work of restoring Windows Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not function without Windows AD, and the businesses' MRP applications used Microsoft SQL, which needs Windows AD for authentication to the databases.
In less than two days, Progent was able to recover Active Directory services to its pre-attack state. Progent then completed reinstallations and hard drive recovery of essential systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server ties and configuration information were usable, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to collect local OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on various desktop computers in order to recover mail messages. A not too old off-line backup of the client's accounting software made them able to return these required applications back online for users. Although significant work still had to be done to recover fully from the Ryuk attack, critical systems were restored quickly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation showed little impact and we made all customer sales."
During the next few weeks critical milestones in the restoration process were accomplished through tight cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:
- In-house web sites were returned to operation without losing any information.
- The MailStore Server exceeding 4 million historical messages was brought online and available for users.
- CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory functions were fully operational.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was deployed.
- Nearly all of the desktops and laptops were functioning as before the incident.
"So much of what was accomplished in the initial days is mostly a haze for me, but I will not soon forget the countless hours all of you put in to help get our business back. I have trusted Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and each time Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This situation was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A possible enterprise-killing disaster was dodged with dedicated experts, a broad spectrum of technical expertise, and tight collaboration. Although in hindsight the ransomware virus penetration described here would have been stopped with modern cyber security technology and recognized best practices, user and IT administrator education, and well designed incident response procedures for data protection and proper patching controls, the fact remains that state-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from China, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware penetration, remember that Progent's team of experts has extensive experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, removal, and file disaster recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were involved), thank you for letting me get some sleep after we made it past the initial fire. Everyone did an incredible job, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
