Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that presents an existential threat for businesses poorly prepared for an attack. Different versions of ransomware such as Reveton, Fusob, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for many years and continue to cause damage. Modern strains of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Nephilim, as well as daily unnamed viruses, not only encrypt online information but also infect many configured system protection. Data synched to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed system, it can render any restoration useless and basically sets the network back to square one.
Getting back online applications and information after a ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted organization struggles to contain, remove the crypto-ransomware, and resume mission-critical operations. Due to the fact that crypto-ransomware needs time to spread, attacks are often launched on weekends, when successful attacks may take longer to discover. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly assembling and organizing a knowledgeable response team.
Progent offers an assortment of solutions for protecting organizations from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are staff training to help identify and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to deployment of modern security gateways with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to identify and suppress new threats quickly. Progent also provides the services of seasoned ransomware recovery consultants with the talent and commitment to restore a compromised environment as rapidly as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Recovery Help
After a ransomware event, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that criminal gangs will provide the needed codes to decrypt any or all of your information. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions. The alternative is to setup from scratch the key parts of your IT environment. Absent access to essential information backups, this calls for a broad range of IT skills, well-coordinated project management, and the capability to work non-stop until the task is complete.
For decades, Progent has made available certified expert IT services for businesses throughout the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes consultants who have attained high-level certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity consultants have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise with accounting and ERP software solutions. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the capability to rapidly determine critical systems and organize the remaining pieces of your network environment after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning system.
Progent's security team deploys state-of-the-art project management systems to orchestrate the complex recovery process. Progent knows the urgency of acting quickly and in concert with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to put essential systems back on line as fast as humanly possible.
Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Incident Response
A small business contacted Progent after their network was crashed by the Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been launched by Northern Korean state sponsored criminal gangs, possibly adopting strategies leaked from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific businesses with limited ability to sustain disruption and is among the most profitable iterations of ransomware. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing business headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk intrusion had shut down all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. Most of the client's system backups had been directly accessible at the start of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200K) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but ultimately called Progent.
"I can't tell you enough in regards to the care Progent gave us during the most fearful period of (our) company's life. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. The fact that you could get our messaging and production applications back sooner than 1 week was amazing. Each expert I worked with or texted at Progent was laser focused on getting us working again and was working breakneck pace to bail us out."
Progent worked together with the customer to quickly assess and assign priority to the mission critical services that had to be recovered to make it possible to restart departmental operations:
- Active Directory
- Email
- Financials/MRP
To start, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes incident response industry best practices by stopping lateral movement and clearing infected systems. Progent then began the work of restoring Active Directory, the heart of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not work without Windows AD, and the businesses' financials and MRP system leveraged Microsoft SQL, which depends on Active Directory services for authentication to the databases.
In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to restore Windows Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then helped perform rebuilding and hard drive recovery of needed systems. All Exchange ties and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to assemble non-encrypted OST files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on various workstations to recover email messages. A not too old offline backup of the businesses accounting/ERP systems made it possible to recover these required applications back on-line. Although major work remained to recover totally from the Ryuk event, the most important systems were returned to operations quickly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we produced all customer orders."
During the next few weeks important milestones in the recovery project were completed in tight collaboration between Progent team members and the client:
- Self-hosted web sites were restored without losing any information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over 4 million archived messages was spun up and accessible to users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoices/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control functions were 100 percent functional.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was deployed.
- Most of the user PCs were being used by staff.
"A lot of what went on during the initial response is mostly a fog for me, but my team will not soon forget the care each of the team put in to give us our company back. I have been working together with Progent for at least 10 years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has shined and delivered as promised. This event was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A probable business extinction catastrophe was dodged with hard-working professionals, a broad array of IT skills, and tight collaboration. Although upon completion of forensics the crypto-ransomware virus incident detailed here should have been identified and prevented with up-to-date cyber security solutions and security best practices, user education, and appropriate security procedures for data protection and applying software patches, the fact is that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware attack, remember that Progent's team of professionals has proven experience in ransomware virus blocking, removal, and data recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (and any others who were contributing), I'm grateful for making it so I could get rested after we made it through the most critical parts. Everyone did an impressive effort, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
