Ransomware : Your Feared IT Catastrophe
Crypto-Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsRansomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that poses an extinction-level danger for businesses poorly prepared for an assault. Multiple generations of crypto-ransomware such as CrySIS, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for many years and still inflict damage. More recent versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, LockBit or Egregor, as well as more as yet unnamed viruses, not only encrypt online files but also infect all configured system protection mechanisms. Data replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be ransomed. In a poorly designed system, it can render any restore operations useless and effectively knocks the entire system back to square one.

Getting back online applications and information after a crypto-ransomware event becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business tries its best to stop lateral movement, eradicate the ransomware, and restore mission-critical activity. Due to the fact that crypto-ransomware requires time to move laterally, penetrations are frequently sprung during weekends and nights, when successful attacks tend to take longer to identify. This compounds the difficulty of promptly marshalling and orchestrating a capable response team.

Progent has a range of support services for protecting enterprises from ransomware penetrations. These include staff education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to deployment of modern security appliances with AI capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish zero-day cyber threats quickly. Progent also provides the assistance of veteran crypto-ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and commitment to rebuild a breached environment as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Support Services
After a crypto-ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that distant criminals will respond with the keys to decipher all your files. Kaspersky ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their files after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The alternative is to piece back together the vital components of your IT environment. Without access to full data backups, this requires a broad complement of skills, professional team management, and the willingness to work continuously until the task is finished.

For twenty years, Progent has offered certified expert Information Technology services for companies throughout the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded top certifications in key technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity specialists have garnered internationally-renowned certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise in financial management and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the ability to efficiently ascertain critical systems and re-organize the remaining components of your IT environment following a crypto-ransomware event and configure them into a functioning system.

Progent's ransomware team of experts deploys state-of-the-art project management systems to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent appreciates the importance of working swiftly and together with a customer's management and Information Technology resources to assign priority to tasks and to put the most important applications back online as soon as possible.

Client Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Restoration
A business engaged Progent after their network was attacked by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been developed by North Korean state sponsored hackers, suspected of using approaches exposed from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk targets specific organizations with little or no tolerance for operational disruption and is among the most lucrative versions of ransomware malware. Headline organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a regional manufacturer located in Chicago with around 500 staff members. The Ryuk event had frozen all company operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the beginning of the attack and were destroyed. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (more than $200K) and hoping for good luck, but ultimately reached out to Progent.

"I cannot thank you enough about the support Progent gave us throughout the most critical period of (our) businesses existence. We had little choice but to pay the Hackers except for the confidence the Progent experts gave us. That you were able to get our messaging and key applications back quicker than a week was incredible. Each expert I spoke to or communicated with at Progent was hell bent on getting us working again and was working non-stop to bail us out."

Progent worked with the customer to rapidly get our arms around and assign priority to the essential applications that needed to be restored to make it possible to restart company functions:

  • Windows Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Email
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To start, Progent followed ransomware penetration response industry best practices by halting the spread and disinfecting systems. Progent then began the steps of restoring Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange email will not operate without Active Directory, and the customer's accounting and MRP system used Microsoft SQL, which requires Active Directory services for access to the data.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to recover Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then initiated setup and storage recovery on the most important servers. All Microsoft Exchange Server data and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to find intact OST data files (Outlook Offline Folder Files) on various desktop computers and laptops in order to recover mail messages. A not too old offline backup of the customer's financials/MRP software made them able to recover these vital services back online for users. Although a large amount of work still had to be done to recover completely from the Ryuk event, core systems were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the production operation ran fairly normal throughout and we delivered all customer orders."

During the next couple of weeks critical milestones in the recovery project were completed through close cooperation between Progent team members and the customer:

  • Internal web applications were brought back up without losing any data.
  • The MailStore Server containing more than 4 million archived emails was brought online and available for users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control functions were fully operational.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was brought on-line.
  • 90% of the user desktops were functioning as before the incident.

"Much of what happened in the initial days is nearly entirely a haze for me, but my management will not forget the commitment all of you accomplished to help get our business back. I have trusted Progent for the past 10 years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This time was a life saver."

Conclusion
A potential enterprise-killing disaster was dodged by hard-working professionals, a wide array of knowledge, and tight teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the crypto-ransomware virus penetration detailed here would have been stopped with modern cyber security technology solutions and ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, team education, and properly executed incident response procedures for information protection and proper patching controls, the fact is that state-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and represent an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware virus, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus defense, cleanup, and file recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others that were helping), thanks very much for letting me get some sleep after we got through the initial push. All of you did an impressive effort, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
