Crypto-Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Nightmare
Crypto-Ransomware Remediation ConsultantsRansomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that poses an existential threat for businesses unprepared for an assault. Different versions of ransomware such as CrySIS, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for many years and still cause havoc. Recent strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Egregor, as well as additional as yet unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt online information but also infiltrate most configured system restores and backups. Files replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be ransomed. In a vulnerable data protection solution, this can make automatic restore operations useless and basically sets the datacenter back to square one.

Retrieving services and information following a ransomware intrusion becomes a race against time as the targeted organization tries its best to stop the spread, eradicate the ransomware, and resume mission-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware needs time to spread, penetrations are usually sprung during weekends and nights, when penetrations are likely to take more time to discover. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly assembling and organizing a qualified response team.

Progent provides an assortment of support services for securing enterprises from ransomware events. Among these are team education to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus installation of the latest generation security solutions with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and disable new cyber attacks intelligently. Progent in addition offers the services of experienced ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and perseverance to restore a breached system as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Support Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware penetration, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that cyber criminals will provide the needed keys to unencrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that seventeen percent of crypto-ransomware victims never recovered their files even after having paid the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are typically several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions. The other path is to piece back together the essential components of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of full data backups, this calls for a broad complement of IT skills, top notch project management, and the willingness to work continuously until the recovery project is complete.

For decades, Progent has offered professional Information Technology services for companies across the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts includes engineers who have been awarded top industry certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have earned internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience with accounting and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise affords Progent the capability to quickly identify necessary systems and organize the remaining pieces of your IT system following a ransomware penetration and assemble them into an operational network.

Progent's security group deploys best of breed project management systems to coordinate the complicated recovery process. Progent knows the urgency of acting rapidly and in unison with a client's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to put critical applications back on-line as soon as possible.

Customer Story: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Penetration Recovery
A small business sought out Progent after their organization was taken over by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been deployed by Northern Korean state sponsored hackers, suspected of adopting techniques exposed from the U.S. National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific businesses with little or no ability to sustain disruption and is one of the most profitable examples of ransomware viruses. Headline organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturing business headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk attack had disabled all essential operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's backups had been online at the beginning of the attack and were damaged. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (in excess of $200,000) and hoping for the best, but in the end called Progent.

"I cannot thank you enough about the expertise Progent gave us throughout the most critical time of (our) businesses survival. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals behind the attack except for the confidence the Progent group provided us. That you could get our e-mail system and critical servers back into operation in less than five days was amazing. Every single person I talked with or communicated with at Progent was amazingly focused on getting us restored and was working 24/7 on our behalf."

Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly identify and prioritize the critical services that needed to be restored to make it possible to continue departmental functions:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Email
  • Accounting/MRP
To begin, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes event mitigation best practices by isolating and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then started the task of rebuilding Active Directory, the heart of enterprise environments built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not function without AD, and the customer's accounting and MRP system leveraged Microsoft SQL, which requires Active Directory services for access to the database.

Within two days, Progent was able to recover Active Directory services to its pre-attack state. Progent then completed reinstallations and storage recovery of the most important servers. All Exchange schema and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to locate intact OST files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Data Files) on user workstations and laptops in order to recover mail data. A not too old off-line backup of the customer's financials/ERP systems made it possible to restore these required programs back online. Although a lot of work needed to be completed to recover totally from the Ryuk attack, core systems were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the production line operation was never shut down and we made all customer orders."

During the following couple of weeks important milestones in the restoration process were accomplished in tight collaboration between Progent team members and the customer:

  • Internal web sites were returned to operation with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over 4 million historical emails was brought online and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoices/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control modules were completely restored.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was brought online.
  • Nearly all of the user PCs were back into operation.

"A huge amount of what transpired those first few days is nearly entirely a blur for me, but our team will not soon forget the urgency each of your team accomplished to give us our business back. I've utilized Progent for the past 10 years, maybe more, and each time Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This event was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A possible business extinction catastrophe was avoided by dedicated experts, a wide range of technical expertise, and close teamwork. Although upon completion of forensics the ransomware virus penetration detailed here should have been disabled with modern security technology solutions and best practices, user and IT administrator education, and well thought out security procedures for information protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the reality is that government-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a crypto-ransomware penetration, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has proven experience in ransomware virus blocking, mitigation, and information systems recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were contributing), thank you for making it so I could get some sleep after we made it through the most critical parts. Everyone did an incredible effort, and if any of your team is around the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
